i'm scared of installing the update. it's my first one ever and my computer is working fine, and i heard the horror stories of updating your computer and not working right.

should i update now, or wait a bit?

I've never had any problems with updating my Macs with a later version of the OS. I've installed 10.4.9 and it's been fine, I see no reason why you shouldn't update your Mac.

C2D No Longer Rock Solid After 10.4.9 Update

Hey all,

Just figured I'd throw my hat into the ring with the others who have had problems with 10.4.9. My MBP used to run solid for weeks at a time until this update. Now it's lucky if it makes it 36 hours. First time I've had to hold the power button on this guy and I've done it a few times already. Very upset but 10.5 is right around the corner I guess...

am i the only one having toruble after updating? everything is running so slow, i get beachballs after everything, i dont know what to do.

Firewire drive problems

After installing this update, my Firewire/USB2.0 drive was no longer recognized by my system when connected by Firewire (interestingly, it worked fine when connected by USB). I have a Macbook C2D 2.0GHz. I was able to load a Windows NTFS drive in the enclosure over Firewire just fine, which was weird. I finally reformatted the drive with the GUID partition table, and it worked okay.

Those of you who had Firewire disk problems that were resolved: can you determine if your Firewire drives are partitioned with the Apple Partition Table or GUID?

Now have muffled sound via CD Spin Doctor

Well, just experienced my first post 10.4.9 problem.

I have been using CD Spin Doctor and have been playing the sound through my MBP while recording my vinyl.

Today while recording, I noticed that the sound from the speakers was muffled and distorted. I checked and cleaned the stylus, re-adjusted the balance of the tone arm, cleaned the surface of the disk, all to no avail. I was seriously contemplating having to buy a new stylus.

Out of curiosity, or resigned despair, I played back the file I had recorded so far, only to discover I had a perfect recording!! :confused:

What a pain!! :mad:

(Now if only I could work out how to get through Roxio's recursive download loop when attempting to download the 8.0.1 update .....)

Why is that weird? NTFS drives mount happily in OS X.

It doesn't matter. Unplug your external drives before running the update and you'll be fine. Taking your hard drives to another computer and renaming the volumes probably would have fixed your troubles, especially since you indicate that the same physical drive worked over USB.

Since when? I thought the only Windows format it supported was FAT32.
The only problem with NTFS is that there is no write support (unless you go the MacFUSE route). Other than that, NTFS mounting and read support has worked since at least Panther, if not longer.

Completed the project I was working on, so I CCd my Mac Pro and installed the update.

Everything works fine, making it three for three here.

I'm curious as to wat changes those who do have problems have made to their systems as I have never had any problems updating. Not that I don't back up o a regular basis anyway.

Be kind of nice to know where the tiger pits are. :D

someone had said they thought Safari was better with memory and was snappier.

I cannot tell yet. I really seem to see no differences really at all. maybe if I put a cd or dvd in the superdrive and eject it I will. but other than that it seems like a behind the scenes update.

Maybe Im just lucky here. I had to reinstall mainmenu like the poster said above but that is all so far. Oh and if it werent for this update I wouldnt have known about the Blackberry software for Mac!:D

With my mac pro normally can't use the keys to adjust the volume as i have a digital optical out. However now when its set to digital out. Those keys work, outputting the noise to the internal speaker. But not really doing any good, as nothing goes out through the internal speaker. Kinda stupid if you ask me.:( Anyone get this?

I noticed that after this update I was successfully able to format my portable external hard drive and use it. So I think that disk utility got an update since I used the exact same cable with 10.4.8 and it failed. I can finally use my portable external hard drive :).

eject key and volume keys not working

Ive just bought an intel mac pro. Its my first mac so I'm just getting used to it. I also just updated to 10.4.9 and now my eject key doesn't work even if I hold it down for a minute and also my volume key's don't work. Any ideas?

Ditto here. This update is PERFECT, no issues at all, either with eject key, volume keys, Dictionary, network etc etc etc.

Why do some people have problems? Most reasons are:

- haxies installed, such as APE;
- no repair permissions before and after;
- running other stuff at the same time of the update;
- interruption of the update process.

These alone will comprise probably 90% of the problems people have. This update has NO BUGS at all for me.

Q: Thank you so much! I repaired permissions, restarted, put out the flames with a fire extinguisher and then bought a new Mac. Everything is working fine now!

Remember, always repair permissions.

Please let us know if you used a foam or water based extinguisher. This is very important for those of us who may have to do something similar in the future. My gut feeling is that foam would be better ....:D

Blurry screen

Since the update, my powerbook g4 17" is really blurred at different parts and the blurry and not blurry parts changes when I move the mouse.

Very strange problems and I would like to know if anybody else has the same problem as mine...

Maxime.
