After installing the update my iTunes won't start anymore. It just hangs when it should bring up the program window. It also cannot be force quit, only logging out helps.

I trashed everything that goes along itunes (even the .pkgs from Library/Receipts) and reinstalled the app. Didn't help. I even made a new user to see if something was wrong with my current one – still nothing. PrivilegeFix.app didn't help.

Does someone know a trick to fix this? The good thing is my Logitech USB headset seems to work now, but if I had to choose between that and iTunes, I'd rather take iTunes.

If you have an Ipod shuffle plugged in when you boot up unplug and then try, had the same problem. for that matter try unplugging all usb extas. i think it might be a glitch

Two things:

On 10.4.8 and the Itunes update before fullscreen coverflow (7.0..?) anytime i would boot up my powerbook g4 with ipod shuffle plugged in itunes would hang when i started it, and often it was a lengthy force quit process..I hope this has been fixed so i dont have to remember to unplug my ipod shuffle everytime i restart...

Also anyone out there with a Powerbook g4 1.5/1.67 notice any big differences? do we get increased sound? Quartz? New video drivers for our ati or nvidea cards?... I am afraid the day has approached where all streamlining in the system updates/OS will be towards the new intel machines... guess i should start saving...and sell my 'antique'

I feel that repair disk permissions should never be required due to an Apple update. Why would they be wrong? They have no clue what they should be?

I can see it for a 3rd party installation, but if needed due to an Apple install, then we should be bitching big time.

Oh no, repairing permissions could be helpful sometimes like in this thread

It's not needed. Occasionally permissions can get hosed but it's usually rare these days. The problem is that it's become a "catch-all" solution for people who don't even know what permissions are or what repairing them does. You see stuff like this on the forums too often--

"Q: Help! There's smoke coming out of my iMac, the mouse has burst into flames and there are sparks flying everywhere. What should I do?

A: Um...have you tried repairing permissions?"

Hence the "voodoo" accusation. (Yes, my example was slightly exaggerated, for those of you who take everything on the internets way too literally.)

You should always repair permissions before doing any system updates--if the permissions are wrong the update installer may not properly edit/replace files, leaving you with an incomplete system update which can cause a whole host of minor problems (and a few major ones). Repairing permissions after the update, if you did it before, is mostly useless, except that paying attention to the output from the process could clue you in to potential problems. The trick is knowing what's important and what's not.

Permissions corruptions are a fairly trivial matter, and no one needs to bitch about anything permissions-related.

It's not any more or less rare than it always has been. It won't affect you if you don't mess around with your system, because you have to be modifying system files in order to (potentially) alter your permissions.

Sweet... got it upgraded. The only problem I had was after I restarted, I got an error regarding the Airport... after repairing the disk permissions and restarting again, everything seems to be working correctly.

all ok

Well eveythig seems well after I repaired the permissions. Always repair permissions. Habit

17" PB 1.5/1.5 80gig

Safari...

definitely has changed on my 12" PB 1.5

Not that i use it that often but, the preferences section appears to have disappeared. When I click on it now all I get is the Auto-fill tab, nothing else, anyone else finding this??

Can't say I'm finding any other improvements, volume's the same, programs still open in same time, only other difference is longer boot time.

Yah, I'm still stuck at the startup screen. My little circle loader is having a blast.

Can anyone point me to the right direction to when this happens and how it may be solveable??

I'm having this same problem on my MacBook. WTF is going on?

I've been keeping an eye on CPU usage and noticed that iTunes is using about 5 - 7% by just playing music.

I don't know if this matters, but I have 7400 items in my library, iTunes is hidden (not minimized), playing in the cover flow mode. Is this a normal amount of CPU usage for iTunes?

Other than that, the upgrade to 10.4.9 has been great. I really like the fixes to the sound and the eject key.

Why would you hide it if you're using Coverflow? Switch it back to regular view and it should stay around 1% (my PowerBook is slightly higher than my Intel iMac, usually about 3%). But no, that's not a terribly unrealistic number to have on an idle system.

I typically see 15% cpu usage for iTunes on a 550mhz G4 powerbook 512mb ram.... so 5-7% might be a tiny bit high for a computer with 4x the speed and 2x the cores :) I have 6300 songs, roughly.

To that stacatto guy whose laptop always crashes.... it sounds like you have a hardware problem that continues to go unadressed. Have you tested your RAM?

I updarted my MPB yesterday. Everything's working great. When it restarted it seemed to take a while to boot up again, but I get that when I update things. lol The main thing the update changed that I notice and also am very happy with is the volume. It may have been like this all the time for others, but I had to get the volume to about 2/3 to get a good sound. Now, it's at 3-4 bars to get a sound the same or very similar to it volume-wise. That's been pretty helpful. :apple:

It still works ...

Yeah...so anyone knows a fix for that?

Just to clarify, the shortcut to put the computer to sleep still works, you just have to hold down the eject key a little longer, just like we now have to do to eject a disk. :)

"Q: Help! There's smoke coming out of my iMac, the mouse has burst into flames and there are sparks flying everywhere. What should I do?

A: Um...have you tried repairing permissions?"

Q: Thank you so much! I repaired permissions, restarted, put out the flames with a fire extinguisher and then bought a new Mac. Everything is working fine now!

Remember, always repair permissions.

What a fantastic update. I am ecstatic. My Wifi range also quadrupled today as a result of the update. Prior to this it was averaging somewhere between 1 and two bars = extremely poor (and given that it is some distance away from the router).

Now however, I get a FULL reception, 100% of the time. Also Front Row load times are snappier for me, when playing songs or video. Not tried podcasts yet, but thanks Apple! Way to go!

I feel like calling the Tech Support just to say thanks.

I made the upgrade to Mac OS X 10.4.9 (this includes the other stuff that was updated that day). Everything went smoothly. However, it looks like Apple had revived a problem I had that was fixed about two month ago where it was having trouble connecting to my university's 3rd party wireless access points.

Whenever my connection (on first attempt) drops out or when I sleep my MacBook, on the second attempt in trying to reconnect, it gives an error connecting to the specified network. Furthermore, the following is displayed on the Console when the error occurs:
Mar 16 11:00:38 xxxxxx-MacBook /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Apple80211.framework/Resources/airport: Error: WirelessAssociate2() = 88001006 for network wireless4owls. The operation timed out.

Does anybody have a solution for me to revert the update back to the previous Airport update (AirPort Extreme Update 2007-001)?

the only problem i can see since the update is that there's a little green line running down the left side of the photo booth window. does anyone else have this?

i'm scared of installing the update. it's my first one ever and my computer is working fine, and i heard the horror stories of updating your computer and not working right.

should i update now, or wait a bit?

I was hoping the new update would stop the beeping when I turn on the isight camera in imovie but at least I can have both imput and output volumes at 49% with no beep. In 10.4.8 I had t turn it down to about 27%. At least I know its an audio feedback problem and not something bigger.
