update has broken my macbook keyboard. tried to download the keyboard fix which was released 4 months ago but it wont let me install saying that i dont need it. typing this using the keyboard viewer , help!

Edit: Forgot to mention that I also tried a repair permission but that didn't solve it either. Then after typing the original post, thought I'd try the old turn off turn back on, and keyboard now working. yeah!

i am still running TIGER 10.4.11 and keep watching and listening seriously to all of you, even though i will admit 75% of what you guys say is over my head, i am not a professional, i just love Macintosch and Tiger is to me at least the very best of what Jobs and his crowd came out with.....i have been really disappointed that so many continue to have Leopard problems or should i say "issues" to be pc. anyway i really do want to upgrade to Leopard even though there are some aps and candy stuff that i'd never use, even with Tiger there are some things i still have not used and this is because i'm not that computer smart-i have no ego thing about admitting this-
BUT i just keep waiting for when many of you finally say Leopard has fixed abc and xyz and even def....i'd just like to know when that day will come...i know many of you have had not one negative issue with Leopard, and there are also many who have a greater computer skill level than i do and what small little things appear you guys are more than able to solve them...but you someone not so computer smart its just those little bumb things that for someone like me fall apart over. so i really hope a thread of whatever you call them will come out one day and peop-le like me that Leopard and its string of updates properly installed are now resulting in a pretty good system because i like Apple/Mac products and really can't wait for the go ahead from you guys that Leopard has finally "made it" because i'll get that and i also hope Apple and ATT straighten their act out over the iPhone and be honest with its customers on the REAL dollar costs, because i'd really like to get an iPhone too...

don't worry. that vast majority of people have either no problems or very few minor/easily fixable problems. i have had a macbook pro since they first came out with no issues even though there were countless complaints in these forums about it. I also have been using leopard and have applied all updates as they have been released and have still yet to encounter a problem. this isn't to say that you won't ever have a problem with leopard, but reading these threads can lead one to believe that the problems are much more pervasive than they actually are.

the problem is that when something goes wrong people post about it because they are looking for a solution or they are simply frustrated. when everything just works people don't get all worked up to let the world know that they aren't having any issues.

all that being said, if you are currently using tiger and it suits your needs and you are happy with it then i see no reason to upgrade. i was in the same boat and had no compelling reason to upgrade, but i did anyway and i have no complaints.

I agree... I have a Mac Pro and Leopard runs great on it. I don't get internet drop-outs and stuff and everything just works. I am so happy with Leopard that my only recent complaint is the change of the menu opacity.

I'm sorry, i haven't read all 16 pages of this discussion.

But my MBP (15" 2.16 Core Duo) and Mac Pro (2008) both have stopped mounting FW HD's since i updated... i did it on the Mac Pro first and thought it must have just been bad luck that the FW800 WD MyBook Pro drive died then.

Got home from my studio and installed it on my MBP to see if it would stop the airport dropping out all the time. It didn't, and now my FW400 drive at home won't mount either.

Great.

Anyone else got this?

Cheers

My LaCie FW800 won't mount. I was going nuts! USB2 works.

Did you unplug the drives (firewire cables, not power) before applying the update? OS updates in the past have been known to kill external drives or their controllers, especially fw drives. ALWAYS unplug any unnecessary equipment before doing an OS update! The only things that I leave plugged are my external keyboard and mouse.

My FW device wasn't plugged in during the update.

Did anyone else have any problems with Console.app? Mine suddenly started working normally again.

It was a rather painless update compared to 10.5.3. Then again I didn't have Little Snitch installed.

I'm not going to read the previous 16 pages either, but have you tried seeing if the firmware for your drive has a firmware update available?

Yep, downloaded the LaCie tool and no new firmware.

Incidentally, LaCie doesn't recommend you use that tool even though it's posted on their website. I had used the firmware tool recently, screwed up my drive and had a long chat with LaCie about why post a tool that screws up drives. Another reason I won't buy LaCie again but that's another post.

I used to believe that all the complaints about macs came from a small handful of users who were a. extremely nitpicky b. ALWAYS on their computers and were bound to find a problem in any event, c. had too much time on their hands, or d. chronic complainers.

As a casual user who relies primarily on word processing, the internet and spreadsheets as well as of course internet and audio/video programs, I can say that I've experienced a handful of issues, which while minor in the overall scheme of things, nonetheless are persistent and seem not to go away, after multiple updates.

First, what is up with quicktime? There is always a weird border artefact which plays on numerous quicktime videos.

The same type of problem crops up on dvd playback. I'm sure you guys are familiar with the white lines that appear at the edges of the movie image.

Just fix these issues already. They involve video playback which I'm sure most everyone using a mac utilizes very frequently.

Oh, and where the heck is my blu ray?????

iChat, Mail and iTunes still crashes on me, and spotlight has not been working and searching correctly.

Installed the update last night and eveything went ok, I have not had time to fully test my Mac for Gremlims.

Well, installed it the day it came out on my Mac Pro 2.66 (see signature), and then on my iBook G4 1.33 the next day. And, so far, both systems are doing great.

Sure, I have complaints. But, I've had those since 10.4.x (but those have more to do with changed or missing features). As for stability and performance, etc. no complaints here.

10.5.4 is just as good as everything I've had from 10.4.0 through now. I say install the update. No complaints here.

Of course, repair your permissions before and after. With 10.5.x, I've found that permissions issues are less frequent. But, after this update, I did have several permissions that needed repaired on both systems. So, it's a good idea to do it anyway.

If you've read my other posts, you'll know that I speak my mind, and am definitely not an Apple fanboy or even a admiring supporter. So, if I say I'm not having an issue, you can believe me :D

I am sorry to hear that some are having issues. But, figured I'd throw my experience so far into the mix for others to weigh before making their own choices.

I have the same problem. I don't know where everyone is coming up with all of these bugs from. I have a 2.66GHz Mac Pro too and it runs smoothly and I always keep it on and I almost never restart it unless there's an update that requires me to. Just like you, the problems I have are pretty old and I don't think they'll be addressed in an update.

Imagine this - Back to my mac, on our windows computers with Mobile me!

Yes, that would be dope, dope, dope.

Now, that said, and we know there are more iPhone users on WINDOWS than OSX, (Duh), you know there will be 3rd party apps out the ying yang, some of which will be cool for the windows.

But, if you can install windows on a mac machine, what's to stop someone from installing OSX on a PC machine? (Yes, I know Apple=hardware) and have built a OSX86.org machine and it blazed for not much money.

Anyway, what would really keep Apple from someday saying, you know, lets deal with HP or DELL, or even AMD (when they finally can compete again) and release the OS onto PC machines? Think about it, legally, you would think by installing the OS you are within the boundries as I don't think it states you can't install on a non apple hardware device and if it does, what if MSFT said, you CANNOT install OS on APPLE HARDWARE?

I think Apple would make a boatload of cash and lets face it, GPU cards out there ROCK and you could have machines that could run motion/FCP no problem and games (of course) for well under $1000, if not $500.

Anyway, I had 10.5.4 and Safari - - to many GPU redraw problems MBP 2.4 glossy 256 GPU, and can't remember if the redraw was SAFARI or 10.5.4 as if it was 10.5.4 beta, I would love to install the SAFARI beta again as it was quick and loved the package (save as) similar to the firefox plug in.

peace, tired, rambling.

10.5.4 is VERY slow

10.5.4 is a joke. I was very unhappy with 10.5.2, especially with the bizarre artefacts in quicktime 7. Airport reception was also a pathetic joke with 10.5.2. However, 10.5.3 solved both issues and I felt overall, the speed of the OS was quite a bit zippier. Now, enter 10.5.4. For some reason, I still get excited over new . releases. 10.5.4 however, has been a major disappointment. It is very slow. I would say opening apps takes 20% longer, across the board. I see the dreaded beach ball all the time now. What was the point of this release? I see no improvements. Unfortunately, I updated my back up to .4 also, so no turning back now.

One complicating factor may be that my hard drive now only has 100 GB free, on a 232 GB drive, formatted. Is the reduced amount of free space a culprit? I tend to doubt it, as the slowdown has been abrupt, ie, snappy before .4, slow after it. Anybody else seeing the same?

I have about 93GB free on a 232GB drive and no worries here: apps open quickly, everything runs smooth- can't say I've noticed a speed difference between .2, .3 or .4 to be honest- all have been quick and (touch-wood) trouble free.

I updated from 10.5.3 using the Combo Updater and haven't had a problem since. Everything has worked beautifully for me, and it even seems somewhat faster now. While I realize that some people are having problems (as some do with all new releases) you need to realize that not everybody shares this experience, and saying "10.5.4 is a joke" is a ridiculous statement.

Personally I would agree that it is coming close to a joke, and not a funny one, at this point, as after 8 months since release Leopard still comes packed with glaring bugs. And 10.5.4 brought back at least two more that seemed to be fixed in 10.5.3.

Having never had any issues at all using OS X between 10.1.2 and 10.4.11, yes I can see where the accusation of joke quality comes from re 10.5 and its recent updates.

I completely agree. 10.5.2 was the last usable Leopard version for me, and honestly just about the ONLY thing Leopard does better than Tiger is X11, which at least I could fix with some altering of the .bash_profile.

First, Apple broke their NVIDIA drivers in 10.5.3 so I had to put the old ones back myself if I wanted to play Diablo II (and if I played WoW, this same hack would be necessary to make the performance acceptable again). And now, ever since 10.5.4, my wireless connection is utter crap and causes kernel panics nearly every time I connect to the WPA Enterprise PEAP network I have over here. This is utterly ridiculous; Apple pokes fun at Vista so much, but honestly that is by far more stable and usable than Leopard these days.

Unfortunately, this machine shipped with Leopard, so I'm rather stuck with it. The only thing that's kept me from wiping my OS X partition and going full Linux and/or Windows XP is the fact I'm out of my home country and don't have my external storage with me to back up my data to. After putting us all through this horrid alpha test of Snow Leopard, that update better be free.

How did you put your own nVidia drivers in?

I went to the nVidia site yesterday, and couldn't find any Mac Drivers. So, I'm guessing our only options are Apple's included drivers?

I'm noticing weird screen "tears" when dragging the window since 10.5.4 now. Not major. But visually displeasing.

When dragging windows, a portion of the window will tear and split then reassemble on two different points on the screen. Like I suddenly hit an invisible screen split that fixes itself.

I just did a completely fresh 10.5.4 install, and know that it's not my other software or weird configurations. Reinstalled 10.5.0 from the CD and jumped straight to 10.5.4 with the combo updater.

As for WiFi, that has always sucked with OS X (well, at least since 10.4.x). I can't find the nearby connections with my Mac Pro at all (even a computer in the same room). But, if I boot into Windows Vista (on the same Mac Pro), I can find a neighbors WiFi network, and he's a half mile away from me (my closest neighbor). The same is true of my wife's iBook (stuck in OS X obviously) can't see anything local, but her Windows laptop pulls up the neighbors WiFi.

Otherwise, I don't have any stability issues with OS X. But, then I've been using it since 10.0.0. And, never had any crashes with any of the versions. Now, if you want crashing, you should have tried System / Mac OS 8.0, 8.1, 8.5.x, and 9.0 (9.2.2 was almost usable if you didn't want to do more than one thing at a time).
