Okay I have waited a few days, Sam Adams Irish Red close by for luck, and now updating my MacBook first.....let's see what happens.......

Software update installed and after two auto reboots, desktop appeared.....so far so good! First impression Airport and Firefox seems faster even on my older 802.11G MIMO D-Link router and nothing appears to be broken. At this point I feel confident updating my iMac.

Mine is a 2006 ATI MBP (2.33Ghz C2D) with 3Gb memory and QT and kernel_task each were taking roughly 50% CPU to play that video since the upgrade. If kernel_task is taking up 50% I can forget about interactivity!

VLC plays the same video without breaking a sweat so the machine itself is not a problem. So I went ahead, backed up my applications and data, did all the deactivations (iTunes/Audible) and wiped it clean. Next installed plain 10.5 and tried playing the same video - much better 28% QT and 15% kernel_task.

Then I applied the 10.5.7 update from combo installer and it is back to taking 50% percent CPU - although this time the kernel_task has gone down to 35% which might be just be by fluke.

I am now doing the whole backup/wipe/reinstall/re-update drill on my wife's 4,1 MBP which is just used for surfing/email/documents - she is complaining it is unbearably sluggish to boot and switch between apps - was just fine before the update.

Next I have to worry about installing the update on my dad's macbook - he lives thousands of miles away, has a slower 256 Kbps connection and if the update breaks something it is very hard to support.

Only Apple can pull such awesome stunts. It takes competence of different kind to break stuff on minor release of the OS when they control their hardware, software, drivers, applications, and have a tiny user base.

Here is a pic of my Processors speed and use:

Menubar still doesn't reliably follow application focus: check!

Colour calibration still randomly reverts to the disgusting 'Color LCD' on wake from sleep/screensaver: check!

And I look forward to making the same post for ..8 and likely SL as well. Thank goodness they don't fix these things!

Keep saving your money

Bottom line, if you don't really need this update to fix an issue, I'd wait until you can buy an usb drive for time machine. Peace of mind.

Until then, I'd hound the usual sites like mwave, zipzoomfly etc for clearance drives. Pricegrabber's pretty good for aggregating shopping info for an item. Last but not least, if you have a local computer parts store that salvages as well, they're bound to have cheap enclosures and salvaged drives at deep discounts from retail. You can roll your own - it's a piece o' cake.

Instead of buying the cheapest external hard drive, wait a bit longer until you are able to buy a better hard drive. You will benefit from the greater reliability of a better drive than buying the cheapest.

And the point about backing up is valid. You do not concern yourself with IF you will have a failure, but it more likely will be WHEN you have a failure.

Unless 10.5.7 fixes Safari crashing due to a conflict with flash video AND you have been experiencing these crashes, why would you believe you HAVE to update?

my umbp update fine with 10.5.7, cause i've always download the combo updater and double check the SHA1 key,
i've never use software update to update the OS.

Crash crash and crash again

Clean install of osx two weeks ago, running like a dream
Installed the 10.5.7 update and now programs such as mail, safari and firefox hang constantly and cant be force quit.

Cant use spotlight, it just freezes up the entire system.

Also when the system goes to sleep it re-awakes without a login box... which isnt handy. Just a black screen and mouse pointer which i can move around.

So I have restarted the computer nearly 20 times since yesterday.

Thanks apple.

Hmmm, I always find all these the update broke my mac posts to be surprising. I've had macs since the start of tiger, and I've never had any problems with any updates. I guess computers are like cars if you take care of them, they last forever, but if you neglect them problems will come up. I always repair permissions before and after an update and also periodically delete/update old programs/files and run the scheduled scripts. Still even my mother's mac (and she does none of that) has never had any problems.

Hmm ATI drivers updated (1.5.44, from 1.5.36)

Better OpenGL 3.0 compatibility. Seems like Snow Leopard will use OpenGL 3.0 along with OpenCL

What part of "Can't afford anything to store my backups on..." was unclear?. We don't ALL have disposable money, all the time. We don't ALL have six figure salaries. To me £10 is a lot right now, I don't care HOW much you judge me by that statement; if you do, you're not the kind of person I'd ever consider as a friend. Regardless of how cheap something may appear to you, value and affordability are relative to where you live and what you earn; would have thought intelligent Mac users could work that much out. Some people scrape by on $100 or less a week, and it maybe the diff between eating or starving, and how do you know the guy hasn't been made redundant?. Bottom line; noone knows anything about most of the people on here; assume makes an ASS of U and ME.

Glossywhite, you're a (glossy)man to my heart!

wifi stability, bluetooth restored by resetting PRAM

the 10.5.7 update has made my santa rosa macbook pro forget that it has bluetooth installed. the menu is gone, the bluetooth tab of "keyboard & mouse" in system preferences is gone, and selecting bluetooth in the apple profiler simply says "no information found."

in addition to the above, i also developed an annoying bug with my airport: my connection remained active, but would stop carrying any data (total ping failure) every few minutes until i clicked the airport menu and it rescanned the network (a work-around i discovered quite by accident).

i reset my PRAM and both issues seem, for the time being, to have been resolved.

i had significant problems with this update (see above), and i keep my mac similarly well-maintained. i think sometimes, things just happen.

true, i didn't repair permissions beforehand (since technical consensus seems to be that this is largely a vestigial maneuver and there's no real reason to now), and i used the automatic software update instead of downloading the combo updater. but that's exactly the way apple expects all users to do it. and just this once at least, i had problems, which required me to reset my PRAM in order to fix. just one of those things. i appreciate reading the "update broke my machine" posts, watching for patterns to emerge, so that i know what i'm getting into. sorta like how reading horror stories of updates past convinced me to back up and then unmount all my external drives before updating, just in case of some freakish accident.

All good

I am also quite surprised at some of the issues that people have cropping up. I have done updates both personal and corporate since 10.4.4 and never had a problem with either Combo or normal Software Update.

10.5.7 on both my own unibody Macbook as well as a variety of corporate machines I take care of can report not a single issue thus far. In fact things are running silky smooth on the Macbook and on the other machines DirectoryServices seems to be faster to find servers at logon, which is very good.

If anyone is has bugs, please be a good citizen and make sure you report them : bugreport.apple.com

I reported a bug with a timer redraw issue/glitch in Keynote Presenter Display and was pleased it was fixed in the 10.5.7 update. I normally get a response to bug reports fairly quickly and it certain makes you feel good when they can acknowledge the issue and are working on it.

Posting here is well and good, but make sure you let the engineers know!

I'm assuming you submitted all those bugs to Apple right?

Spotlight intermittent Indexing of external drive

I was one the people reporting no problems on the update.

Turns out I spoke too soon. I though the Spotlight re-indexing was a one time thing that I might have interrupted, but in the past few hours, it's turned into a full fledged ... THING. On every reboot after the update, Spotlight would reindex and it kept taking longer and longer.

Right now, I'm in the middle of rebuilding my entire Spotlight index because I couldn't track down the culprit with the console. Next step, single user mode...

Guess this update really is turning out to be a pain in the ass.

I've updated to 10.5.7 and am having problems ejecting external drives as spotlight seems to be doing an occasional index - this is really tedious - when will it get on with it or just stop? Any solutions yet?

I updated yesterday my iMac '09 and my MacBook Air. No problems at all. It took something like 20' and everything went smooth.

powermac g5 dual 1.8 updated with combo installer no issues so far.

imac 24" 2.16 c2d had it's first ever panic this morning and another in the afternoon. may try a combo update on this one too if it persists.

PS: it definitely improves HD content playing in my MacBook air rev_a. For the first time I was able to play 1080p mkv files with Plex smoothly. A big, big improvement.
Maybe they updated Intel X3100 drivers?

Since updating, my unibody macbook pro's gaming performance has suffered. It crashes constantly when using the 9600 m GT when playing WoW. Never used to do that.

iMac 20" intel yada yada yada

Waited for the dust to settle and installed this morning via software update. I know verifying and fixing permissions is not necessary but I did prior to installing. 256MB in about 10 minutes. And about another 10 min for the install. No runs drips or errors and rebooted without a hitch. Did not even remove any USB devices. Browsing does seem snappier along with other programs as well. So far no problems.

Hi it's Mac Notebook version 10.4.11, can it be fixed.

Thank
Susan

10.4 is Tiger. You only get a security update. 10.5 is Leopard. you must buy the new OS to be able to upgrade it...

and that's what you get for playing WoW!

No one ever has problems, until one day they do. And then all their precautions, except for having a good backup, mean nothing.
