I had a problem after installing Safari 4 beta: the Currency Converter was not converting to the correct amount. Then I found out over here that a few of us had the same issue, and someone pointed out that it was a minor coding bug which mismatch the rows/lines/currencies for the app.

ok thanks, no such problem on my MBP. It's a very handy app.

any other iMac owners (late 2007) STILL not seeing this update via Software Update? should i just download the combo update or is there a specific reason why 10.5.7 doesn't show for me. my system is very basic, no weird hacks or themes, or devices attached.

should i just install the combo update anyway? i have rebooted and ran Software Update before opening any other programs.

Hmm...

Four hours to download? I think I'll try tomorrow.

Never takes that long with Windows Update but then I suppose they have more practice.

Dude, I don't know what exactly is your problem but is most definitely has to do with your connection and NOT apple. I downloaded the update yesterday in a matter of a couple of minutes and it is quite large and there is absolutely nothing special or remarkable about my internet connection.

Nope. It downloaded flawlessly in under 10 minutes yesterday. That wasn't the case the day before using the same connection.

Downloaded yesterday night in like 10 mins and installed flawlessly. Tuesday problems was probably because of all the loads..

thanks for the update apple

So you don't remember the issues Aperture had with Time Machine in OS 10.5.0-2?

Ah yes. I remember that. That was an easy fix though. I stopped backing up my Aperture Library with Time Machine. I use Aperture's Vault feature to backup my photo library. Did they ever fix the Aperture Library backup in Leopard? I haven't tried it since.

Hmm... ANY computer begins to get less snappy in the days after a reboot, but I'm not seeing the normal drop off yet.

My computer doesn't slow down and I don't restart for sometimes months at a time... There's no reason to.

I pulled the software update last night and everything downloaded and installed just fine with one reboot.

I note that one of the fixes was "- Addresses a situation that may cause issues when logging into Gmail"

I hope that means that Mail will no longer refuse to shutdown and require a forced kill after it has been logged into gmail for hours... I am forever having to force kill my wife's Mail app due to this. For me, I just use gmail through the web so no problems..

It's not though. They can't test it on thousands/millions of Macs can they? Of course it would react differently to every Mac out there, so there is no telling what an update might do.

Yes, it is.

Jesus H. Tapdancing Christ if Microsoft released a buggy OS nobody would be saying "Oh it's not Microsoft's fault, they can expect it to work on blah blah blah"

You're giving Apple a free pass because they are Apple. This is why us Apple users get snickered at by 92% of the population who don't use Macs. This is why we are not taken seriously. If Steve Jobs make a bowel movement, a million followers declare it divine and write blogs about it.

Think man, think.

Microsoft has to write an OS for thousands upon thousands of PC configurations.

Yet, you "blame" them. Hell, Apple makes an entire line of commercials pointing it out.

Apple supplies the software AND the hardware for their products. The expectation that it should work is infinitely higher for Apple.

Apple has it easy. They have to "test" their OS on 1,000 times fewer machines than Windows does.

Apple sells the machines that their OS runs on. And there are only a handful of models to choose from.

Given this, It could not be easier for Apple to test these updates on every machine configuration they have created for the last 10 years.

If they don't, it is their fault.

Damn, am I the only one that did not opt for the complimentary lobotomy with the purchase of my new Mac?

No you are not the only one - been running Windows and Linux on my Macs since long time :)

Thanks for the refreshingly insightful post - it is good to know there still are people in the Mac universe who go with facts, logic and pragmatism.

Mine was offered in the form of a mail-in rebate, but I lost the UPC symbol. That and I don't like mail-in rebates, so I missed out on that.

The "Jesus H. Tapdancing Christ" made me laugh out loud.

While I agree with you to a certain point about Apple's handful of models to test vs. MS, what Apple CAN'T possibly test are the countless variations of odd plug-ins, freeware apps, all their various preferences and what effects those combinations will have on a machine that's had 3rd-party memory added, etc... at least, I don't THINK they can... ?

That being said, I haven't had an issue beyond the one notable ongoing wireless connection issue with my PowerBook since going to 10.5. I can understand how one would be frustrated when a system they'd been led to believe was superior was having seemingly simple yet nagging and persistent issues. I guess I don't see my system as superior, just one way of computing that I've chosen to go with.

After reading that other guy's post, I thought the same thing. What about the thousands of different software configurations from Shareware, Freeware and 3rd party plugins that people install? Not only that, but a lot of people install hacks (four finger gestures, custom themes and preference panes). Apple certainly can't plan for every single user out there. It's up to the users to not install a bunch of crap that they don't need. My Macs are almost always running very fast and healthy because I actually think before I just install anything.

I had the same problem before 10.5.7, and it is fixed now. Hopefully it is for you too.

I would install the combo. It will check to see what needs to be installed.

My system has the performance of a PPC computer with 256Mb RAM now in 10.5.7 with jumping mouse cursor and apps that take forever to start and appswitching in a three step animation. Only it's a CD 1,66GHz with 2Gb RAM. It's like getting free candy and contracting herpes from it.

Maybe Wifi won't grind to a halt now, haven't tried though. I miss Tiger 10.4.10 and 10.4.11, slow, but unstoppable.
(Seeing todays date in the dock is nice though)

pro tools 8 crash

fyi 10.5.7 made my pro tools 8 le cs2 with digi 003 rack crash. also using firewire 800 hd on last non uni-body rev. macbook pro. after a crash, long reboot, a reset of all firewire devices it seemed to work though. if you have an important session booked you might want to hold off a little bit just incase.

QuickTime Screwed up

QT seems screwed up - playing a video (http://twit.cachefly.net/odtv/0513-sn154.mp4 for e.g.) in QT takes 102+% CPU and not only that but it makes the desktop very sluggish. That was not the case with 10.5.6.

Just downloaded VLC and it is taking only around 8-9% CPU and nothing sluggish.

Gaah - 10.5.7 is looking like the worst update ever. They are going to need 10.5.8 and 10.5.9 to fix this mess.

On the brighter side my Sony BT Stereo headphones now work reliably with 10.5.7 - < 10.5.6 I would get frequent disconnects and loss of sound, 10.5.6 made it worse -kernel panics.

Still, not happy - to sum it all 10.5.6 was better.

Well said. I own a Vista machine as well as a Mac and have yet to have any serious issues with either machine.

Is anyone else with a 17" unibody macbook pro experiencing freezes since the update? I certainly am and it's getting annoying. No weird plugins or hacks or anything.

No, not the only one. Now, it is true that Apple can't plan for people making modifications to the OS, which does happen. But if the OS is properly designed, userland applications should have no need to make such modifications.

Can't login after 10.5.7 (safe login works, ssh too)

Hello, I'll try to read as much as I can of the 25 pages but let me expose my problem in case someone knows a solution already... I've applied 10.5.7, rebooted, had to force shutdown with button (mbp 2.2 GHz) then was able to login fine. I then applied the Safari update, rebooted. Now, I can't login at all, after entering the password, field becomes grey, beachball appears and... nothing more.

I can login in safe mode just fine and even when the machine is in the "limbo" state, I can login remotely through ssh and it seems the loginwindow process has spawned a ManagedClient process which seems stuck.

Any idea before I revert that app with time machine or even reinstall from time machine before 10.5.7?

Thanks.
