I went Mac back in Panther. Started reading the Apple forums right away. Panther was brand new.

Since Panther, and Tiger, and now Leopard, it seems Apple has followed a horrific predictable pattern.

In a nutshell, it's this: The first 3-4 releases of any OS are bugridden and unreliable, and give early adopters fits.

Round about the middle releases, X.X.5 to X.X.6, they get stable. Finally.

Then the following releases are all nightmares, UNTIL THE VERY FINAL RELEASE, which usually comes extremely close to the release of the new OS.

Now, whether you want to blame this on Apple rushing in all sorts of hooks for the new OS in the old OS, or absolute malfeasance (screwing up the later releases on purpose to make more people buy the new untried unreliable versions when they first hit the market) the conclusions are the same:

1. STAY AWAY FROM ANY NEW OS RELEASE until midterm. This is an absolute must.

2. STAY AWAY FROM ANY NEW OS UPDATE until the very final version is released. Ignore everything after the stable midterm release until the final version is released.

3. Then STAY ON THIS VERSION until the new version is at midterm.

If you follow this procedure, as I have from the very beginning, you'll avoid being an unpaid beta-tester for Apple. With the accompanying disastrous consequences.

As for me personally, I'm still not even remotely interested in Leopard, yet. In fact, I probably won't bite the bullet on it until Snow Leopard is released and I can be assured they've gotten out all the bugs out of Leopard and the pre-Snow Leopard disaster releases (like THIS one) are finished.

This strategy also makes sure that all 3rd party drivers have been caught up as well.

For what it's worth.

:apple:

P.S. I'm not even running Spotlight via Spotless, so in that way I'm still on Panther, even though I'm on 10.4.11. My hard drives thank me.

Sorry, this is ********. Every update process in Leopard has shown no issues to me. Secret? None. Just repair permissions before and after, let the process run its course, and avoid installing too much crap in your computer.

And please, STOP presuming that the few reports we read in a specialized forum like this represent the majority or even a sizeable portion of users...millions of other Leopard users couldn't be happier.

Hmm... ANY computer begins to get less snappy in the days after a reboot, but I'm not seeing the normal drop off yet.

??? That's BS. Your drives are too full or you just don't have enough ram or both. I don't reboot my computer unless I have to. If it ain't broke...

Never had a startup problem unless I was starting up...

If I update with the combo updater and repair the permissions before installing, will it reduce the the likelihood of my install breaking?

I don't have any backups so this is important.

Can't afford anything to store my backups on...

I think the question really is, can you afford NOT to?

Seriously, regardless of how much it costs to back up - what do you stand to lose RIGHT NOW, if you had a hard drive failure?

Flawless update...expect that every few minutes my airport connections drop for a minute or so, and then reconnects itself. Never did that before the update...I know this is a known issue but are there any solid solutions??

I'm having the same issue with my 2006 MBP. After update, browsing the internet, airport drops my connection. It connects a few seconds after that, but it's still bothersome none the less.

4 gig, over half the drive free. Glad what you're doing works for you, but when I detect a bit of sluggishness creeping in, I treat this like any other computer I've had over the past twenty years. Reboot, and (for macs) repair permissions.

Runs fine after that, and for longer stretches than any other computers I've owned, I'll give Macs that...

Bottom line, if you don't really need this update to fix an issue, I'd wait until you can buy an usb drive for time machine. Peace of mind.

Until then, I'd hound the usual sites like mwave, zipzoomfly etc for clearance drives. Pricegrabber's pretty good for aggregating shopping info for an item. Last but not least, if you have a local computer parts store that salvages as well, they're bound to have cheap enclosures and salvaged drives at deep discounts from retail. You can roll your own - it's a piece o' cake.

This update still didn't fix a very annoying problem for me. I have the Mail app set to open when I log in and I have the Hide option checked. It still shows up when I log in and doesn't hide. I really wish they would fix this. Here's to hoping for it in 10.5.8!

Hi,
Very briefly I just wanted to say that the update installed quickly and without any issues whatsoever on my iMac. The download via software update took about 30 minutes and the update itself was only a few minutes. The machine rebooted about 3 times I think but eventually ended at the login screen.

Well done Apple, another solid update for me at least. I don't mean to sound insensitive to those having difficulties but it's only fair to highlight my own positive experiences.

Regards,
Craig.

This update was a pain in the butt. Computer completely froze. Hard shutdown. I was too afraid to look when I restarted, but obviously, things seem to be working fine now. I see no benefit whatsoever to this update. Unless you are having very specific problems addressed in the list of 'fixes' I would avoid this update.

No problems here either, on my unibody MB or MBP, downloaded the update, one reboot on the MBP and two on the MB cause I downloaded the Safari 4 beta update, that's it. Sorry for those that are having issues.

QT seems screwed up - playing a video (http://twit.cachefly.net/odtv/0513-sn154.mp4 for e.g.) in QT takes 102+% CPU and not only that but it makes the desktop very sluggish. That was not the case with 10.5.6.

Just downloaded VLC and it is taking only around 8-9% CPU and nothing sluggish.

Gaah - 10.5.7 is looking like the worst update ever. They are going to need 10.5.8 and 10.5.9 to fix this mess.

On the brighter side my Sony BT Stereo headphones now work reliably with 10.5.7 - < 10.5.6 I would get frequent disconnects and loss of sound, 10.5.6 made it worse -kernel panics.

Still, not happy - to sum it all 10.5.6 was better.

I just went to the link you gave, and I don't have any problems. CPU use is 7% and every thing still runs fine while running the movie (I also have 3 tabs open). I have a MacBook late 2007 (2.2Ghz) with 2 gig memory.

In fact I have installed this update on my iMac and this MacBook with no problems what so ever.

Hard drives are soooooooo cheap now. That's no excuse.

What part of "Can't afford anything to store my backups on..." was unclear?. We don't ALL have disposable money, all the time. We don't ALL have six figure salaries. To me £10 is a lot right now, I don't care HOW much you judge me by that statement; if you do, you're not the kind of person I'd ever consider as a friend. Regardless of how cheap something may appear to you, value and affordability are relative to where you live and what you earn; would have thought intelligent Mac users could work that much out. Some people scrape by on $100 or less a week, and it maybe the diff between eating or starving, and how do you know the guy hasn't been made redundant?. Bottom line; noone knows anything about most of the people on here; assume makes an ASS of U and ME.

Mine is a 2006 ATI MBP (2.33Ghz C2D) with 3Gb memory and QT and kernel_task each were taking roughly 50% CPU to play that video since the upgrade. If kernel_task is taking up 50% I can forget about interactivity!

VLC plays the same video without breaking a sweat so the machine itself is not a problem. So I went ahead, backed up my applications and data, did all the deactivations (iTunes/Audible) and wiped it clean. Next installed plain 10.5 and tried playing the same video - much better 28% QT and 15% kernel_task.

Then I applied the 10.5.7 update from combo installer and it is back to taking 50% percent CPU - although this time the kernel_task has gone down to 35% which might be just be by fluke.

I am now doing the whole backup/wipe/reinstall/re-update drill on my wife's 4,1 MBP which is just used for surfing/email/documents - she is complaining it is unbearably sluggish to boot and switch between apps - was just fine before the update.

Next I have to worry about installing the update on my dad's macbook - he lives thousands of miles away, has a slower 256 Kbps connection and if the update breaks something it is very hard to support.

Only Apple can pull such awesome stunts. It takes competence of different kind to break stuff on minor release of the OS when they control their hardware, software, drivers, applications, and have a tiny user base.

Screen Capture issue

I just updated to 10.5.7 and I have only had one problem with it, whenever I try and take a fullscreen photo capture of my MacBook Pro locks up for about 10 seconds then runs fine it's really frustrating. Is anyone else having this problem?

Wasn't Bluetooth stability supposed to be a big push with this update? My Apple wireless keyboard drops out even more than it used to, so I guess that's what stability means :(.

Thankfully in boot camped Vista it has never once dropped out - of course once or twice it has started up forgetting the machine even had Bluetooth capabilities, but nothing a restart didn't fix. Sooner that than never quite knowing when it would drop out.

And I got to report the iTunes dashboard widget crash yet again - it's almost nicer being able to rely on that still being broken ... what would I do with my time if they fixed it?

Okay I have waited a few days, Sam Adams Irish Red close by for luck, and now updating my MacBook first.....let's see what happens.......
