I can't download the update. It was working just fine until it reached 226.4 MB. Then it just sat there and the hours kept going up... to 300 hours! I quit the download and tried again, then it stopped at 2 MB.

Then I got a message that says, "The update "Mac OS X Update" can't be saved. Software Update can't connect to the update server. Make sure you're connected to the Internet, and then try again." I am definitely connected to the Internet, but I am still getting that same message.

That's what you get for using AT&T's 3G service to downlo.....oh wait, sorry, wrong thread.

I think FontBook is an HTML5 incompatibility.

Anyone else experience this after the update? Font Book no longer works, at least with Adobe. I had some fonts from a project that worked fine before, after the update the only way I can get extra fonts (besides the system fonts) is to put them directly in the indesign font folder. Fonts are not seen in Adobe Indesign or Illustrator or Microsoft word. The only thing I can think of is that the font book is not working with this update. Seems like a big issue.

Any other ideas?

Also in indesign and illustrator (CS3) my number pad on my apple external wired keyboard is not working. All other programs it is fine.

Any ideas?

Plugins for Mail.app

It's much easier to see the problems with 10.6.4 than the solutions.
For one, Mail.app is no longer compatible with GrowlMail or WideMail making it useless to me. The me.com webmail beta and iPhone's Mail.app are also subpar.
For a company with a CEO that loves email as much as he does, I'm surprised Apple hasn't stayed competitive with Gmail or Yahoo Mail.

Huge performace increase on 330m :)

Half-life 2 on Very High texture and on portal all setting can be maxed out without lag! Native resolution on 1680x1050. :)

By fully maxed out on Portal, do mean with Texture detail at Very High (not just High), Anisotropic filtering at 16x, AA at 4x, vertical sync enabled and Portal rendering depth at 9? And what is no lag for you; what fps are you getting for your settings?

I would expect that to totally flatten out the frame rate. I see no performance improvement on my 2010 i7 MBP. The best settings I can achieve while maintaining 30+fps consistently (especially with 2 portals on-screen) is with your same resolution and everything maxed, except with no AA and vertical sync disabled.

Guys help, I got screwed by this update. After the update finished installing it wouldn't restart by it self, all I could see was just the wallpaper and mouse cursor. After 10 minutes of waiting I manually turned off my laptop. After I turned it back on it wouldn't boot past the grey apple logo screen. I rebooted with cmd+s and it showed "Error reading driver System/Library/Extensions/System.kext/PlugIns/IOKit.kext" :(:(:(

Do you have time machine backup? If so, just reinstall SL and restore from it. It looks like it got corrupted during install or something like that.

Does OSX have anything equivalent to Windows' System Restore? Time Machine isn't quite the same. I always found that bit of Windows terribly useful.

i agree with you on this one it annoys me to buggery trying to make sense of a comment that has been written by someone who has forgotten all about spelinng and punctuation and grammar there is no way to tell where one attempt at a sentence ends and the next one starts i once received an email from someone seeking employment and it was written as if it was a text to one of their friends i am not sure if he realised that his fate was decided before i got to the end of the stramash of letters

It's at least somewhat heartening to hear concern from a Scot over the abuse of our common language. ;-)

Nope, although I do believe that'll be a feature of the next gen file system (ZFS/BTRFS type with snapshot support) and if 10.7 has it, it'll be a feature that'll make it awesome and be part of the next gen Time Machine.

No backup, this is what makes it worse. :(

Sighs, everybody should have a backup. Just do Archive and Install instead, it'll preserve your current user profile, just not the system files.

I hope that's not just optimism speaking cause it sounds great. "Snapshot support" sounds a lot like something I noticed in Windows 7, where you can right click any file, and somewhere in the options, it allows you to revert to a version of the file from previous dates. All this without needing an external HDD backup or taking any action all the while on behalf of the user. Now that seems magical.

iTunes scrolling fixed!

What was the problem before?

I was hoping scrolling through the music library would be smooth now, but it's still the much the same: It will only scroll smoothly if you're scrolling into view rows of album art that had previously been displayed. If you're venturing into rows that hadn't been viewed yet during that iTunes launch, it'll be very choppy.

It's called Volume Shadow Copy on W7, basically the same thing as snapshot and MS had VSS back since Server 2003 I believe. Snapshot is a great feature of ZFS on Solaris and many modern linux file systems are in progress of having the same snapshot technologies.

Check out TimeVault for Ubuntu. Similar to Time Machines, only TimeVault is just a frontend to the builtin snapshot feature of the file system, it works in real time on the main drive, doesn't require first to back up to an external drive in order to work like this. Although it's important to backup to an external drive as well.

Apple will add snapshot technologies, it's pretty much a given, the question is when? The snapshot feature will give Apple a very powerful technology to integrate with Time Machine and it'll make it easy to backup as well. There's all sort of things Apple can do with snapshot that can practically give them at least a dozen features to add to the OS X. Imagine built in APIs for applications to have copy revision history, data loss prevention if application crashes and so on.

The Apple Software Update app popped up in the Dock and says that the download completed. Quiet surprising because it has just released.

10.6.4 installed now and works fine as of now.

Out of curiosity, do Apple have different distribution servers depending on your location?
...
Are the slowdowns US related? If so, is that because the distribution servers for the US are bogged down?

Yes, Akamai has thousands of servers worldwide. Slowdowns are going to be pretty localized, related either to your ISP, or a single Akamai server needing to restrict load or keep it from being monopolized.

SAFARI 5 teh slow!
Do you have a large hosts file? Try cleaning it out.

Well, I have CS3 Production Premium, and after updating to 10.6.4, all fonts (including those I've downloaded and added via Font Book) are working fine in Premiere Pro CS3 and Illustrator CS3. I tested both system fonts and added fonts.

I hope you figure it out, and that it's some silly thing you overlooked.

Thank you for the great background info, MikhailT. When I stumbled upon that feature in Windows 7 some months back, I was really impressed but knew nothing of how it works exactly. The Ubuntu TimeVault screenshots look enviable too.

Would you happen to know if it takes a toll on HDD space? I assume there must be something going on in the system so that when W7 or Ubuntu saves 100 versions of your 200MB Photoshop file, it's not actually saving 20,000MBs of data.

Why is this taking SO LONG? It's been stuck at 226.4 MB for a really long time, and now it's jumped from 99 hours to 300!

This is a known problem with this update. You see, some of the bits in this update are what are known as "fat bits", and if the tubes running to your house are too narrow those fat bits can get stuck. You need bigger tubes.

Fastest Download Ever

Did Apple stick some servers on the Comcast backbone?

Same here. MAYBE 4 minutes on the combo? Less?

Anyway, had a scare. Rebooted, before it was all done it's "stuff" I started 15 apps at once. Word 2008 crashed with a sorry message. There were weird artifacts all over the screen... gray boxes, "stuck" app splashes. After it all calmed down I quit all and re-did it and it was fine.
Now it SCREAMS as before. Safari 5 is amazingly quick.
