Some really nice undocumented changes.

Apple seems to have fixed a bug introduced with Leopard that sucked memory on 64-bit Intel with 3 GB or more RAM with systems running (Snow) Leopard. My memory footprint after starting up is now 150 MB (20%) smaller. The system seems to clean up memory better now too when it's not in use anymore. This may show nice performance improvement for people doing a lot of stuff on their Mac and having lots of applications open.

Smooth scrolling is now enforced default on the trackpad of my early '08 MacBook Pro and it works great!

I can confirm this. I was like WHAT HAPPENED suddenly!? Additional RAM is indeed set free upon the first boot.

Another proof that Mac OS X’s RAM management is plainly pathetic. I fear to install Lion just cuzz of this very reason.

Still better later than never.

is this update safe? i have a macpro 6core and new to Mac, reason I'm asking is because i'm reading that some people have sound issues and some apps don't seem to work anymore after the update. I'm in no way good on the technical part when it comes to computers especially Macs and i don't want to get myself in trouble ending up with no sound or what have you.

my computer is pretty much default so no extra ssd's or special sound cards, graphics cards etc.

is it smarter to wait it out a bit or safe to install now....

Always better to wait it out.

The :apple:-Fanboys immediately update because they drink the Steve Jobs Kool-Aid.

Your argument cannot be taken seriously. I like updating my computers, Windows and Mac. It doesn't have anything to do with being a fanboy!
Of course for systems that are business critical people should be cautious and have a proper test methodology.

I wonder how you got those numbers from XBench.
You have iMac right? Sorry if I'm wrong.

I have a Mac Pro Early 2008 3GHz 8core with 12GB of RAM and Apples official HD5770 and updated to 10.6.5.
But I get like 258 with OpenGL Graphics Test.

Wonder whats wrong with this.

I have a iMac 27", iMac11,1 model, Core i7 2,8 GHz with 8 GB RAM.
The graphic card is a ATI Radeon HD 4850 with 512 MB VRAM.
I'm also running 10.6.5 and I have the same score as 'okboy'.
OpenGL Graphics Test 326.40
Spinning Squares 414.06 frames/sec

I installed through Software Update and Office 2011 is working for me.

I agree... Office 2011 seems to be working fine for me after installing via Software Update.

I wish people would post actual problems rather than say "it breaks X" or "is broken".

Take your car to the mechanic and say fix it - it's broken. He (like me) will need detail to understand the issue.

It could simply be that the MS Update to Office (released recently) broke something too (or if applied might fix something).

Always use software update. Always make sure your computer is ready for an update.

Manual combo updates that are downloaded within seconds of going live ALWAYS cause these random problems. I read it every time.

That's like complaining your four cylinder car is using all four cylinders. Snow Leopard uses a lot of ram for me, but as soon as I launch a resource heavy program, it makes room for it.

That’s true, but there have been problems for many ppl out there with SL specifically. I was not the only one with the constant 1 GB inactive RAM (blue) and heavy page-outs despite programs wanting some of the inactive RAM cut… it’s never been the case in Leopard or Tiger. That is exactly the issue that thread on the official forums is all about.

Apple updates are never something to avoid, just the opposite. Apple forum users, however, are.

Installed via Software Update on my Mac Pro, rebooted OK but after about 30 mins of use system rebooted itself and got stuck in a loop of rebooting before even fully booted. Just restoring to 10.5 now from Time Machine, will give it another go and if it does the same then I'll wait this one out!

10.6.5 installed via software update. No hiccups, bumps, stalls, burps. Office 2011 working just fine on my MP 2.8 quad mid 2010.

OpenGL fix

May have fixed an OpenGL problem that began in 10.6

imac 9,1 C2D 3.06GHz 4GB RAM ATI 4850

Xbench OpenGL Graphics Test

OS Score FPS

10.5.7 231.6 293.8
10.6 132.7 168.3
10.6.5 264.7 335.7

I didn't specifically record 10.6.4 scores. Maybe was fixed in an intermediate update. If anyone has a 10.6.4 to 10.6.5 back to back that would be good. YMMV
