Will the 10.6.6 update slow down my Intel iMac and try to force me to buy a new one?

I just uninstalled AppStore since it doesn't let me download the free applications available if I don't give my credit card details.

I remember this being an issue for iTunes accounts previously but I found that you can create accounts without a credit card by signing up through other means (google it?). Has this worked for you or are you using an existing account which doesn't have a CC?

I personally don't have a CC in my account now but I have iTunes Gift Card money. No issues with downloading freebies.

There is now a "none" option when setting up an account.

It lags terribly for me.. I have a core 2 duo 2.4ghz 7200 rpm hard drive and 4 gb of ram so it shouldn't be this slow..

Are you talking about the App Store itself?

Similar specs here, and runs perfectly.

I have a 1.83GHz Core Duo Macbook and this update has slowed it down horribly. Beachballs after only a couple of Safari windows open. I have 2GB of RAM which should be fine for day to day needs. Many on this forum would have me believe that only Windows suffers from slowdown after time.

As for the App Store itself, well it's alright. Yet another departure from OSX standard look and feel. The search box is too small and not resizeable. I'm not sure if it's the App Store or the OSX update which does this but now I am regularly seeing the processor start to heat up and fans spin to compensate. Seems it's not only Flash which can cause processor strain.

I have discovered some great apps that I didn't previously know about such as Remote Mouse and Sketchbook Express but I am still suspicious of Apple having this much control over what goes on people's computers. Nearly all the apps that I had previously installed and I considered very useful are not on the app store. Glimmerblocker, SMC fan control, Appcleaner and Adium are all great quality software but they aren't on the App Store so they won't get any extra interest. I am not sure if this is because the developers never submitted them or they break the guidelines in some way. Either way it shows that good software can be overlooked if people put their trust solely in the App Store.

I am considering selling this Mac and I was looking at getting a copy of iWorks to add value. If I bought iWorks from the App Store I wouldn't be able to pass it on to the buyer without knowing their iTunes details to give it as a gift. They might as well just buy it themselves.

Yeah, a great deal. I don't have the words to describe how SCREWED I feel again. I've paid 300 bucks for Aperture and bought every update on the way.

Now they sell Aperture 3 for LESS than I have paid for the 3.0 upgrade, and according to their advertisements, I can install the AppStore version on as many devices as I own, while the license for the boxed version only allowed for the installation on ONE desktop machine and ONE notebook.

Or do I now magically get the same license for my version of Aperture? Or can I register it and get it turned into an AppStore version?

This also wonderfully completely destroys the resell value of my retail copy of Aperture 3, should I have decided to switch to Lightroom or Bibble.

Being an Apple customer is an idiot proof way to quickly lose a lot of money.

You're crying about not being able to resell your used software? Do people actually buy that crap?

Also, were you just born yesterday? New products come out with more features and can be the same price or cheaper. It's been happening for thousands of years. Get over it.

Care to elaborate on SL being Crap? So you are running to versions of OS X, I just don't get some people..... ???

You want me to tell you why snow leopard is crap? First of all, 64 bit VLC player gives me the beach ball. Older versions of vlc player don't do that. I can't stand that when you press the play/pause button on the keyboard or the apple remote iTunes opens automatically (this ruins apple remote funcionality on 3rd party apps that use the apple remote). The only workaround for this is that I made a disk image with disk utility, I moved iTunes into the disk image, then deleted the original iTunes app from the applications folder. iTunes still works normally after doing this. Also, External hard drives and optical discs do not mount at times, even after trying to mount them through disk utility. My computer wakes up after a split second of putting it to sleep ONLY when I'm in the snow leopard partition. Regular leopard is not buggy and glitchy like how I mentioned snow leopard is. A lot of people are disappointed at snow leopard. You can read this: http://amplicate.com/hate/snow-leopard Also, in general, snow leopard uses more memory and more resources than regular leopard. You see, I actually KNOW about hardware and computers.

Snow leoapard is to apple as windows vista is to microsoft. Just super buggy. Those of you who use your computers for IMPORTANT things will know what I'm talking about. By IMPORTANT I mean things other than listening to music, surfing the internet, and watching a movie.

So THAT is why I have 2 seperate partitions. I rarely use the snow leopard partition. I use it mostly as a scratch drive for movie files I'm editing and will soon delete.

Regular leopard doesn't give me ANY problems at all and that is why I'm keeping it. When Lion comes out, I will install that on my smaller partition to test it out (considering apple has been making crap software ever since snow leopard came out). If it's good and not glitchy I will probably delete and install lion on my main partition.

Before you go on saying "I don't understand some people" why don't you get an explanation from that person first. I mean for me, honestly, I don't understand people who actually like snow leopard. I don't understand why more people don't jailbreak their iPhones and use tmobile. I don't understand why anyone spends money on apple dowadays. With what they've done to the iPhone and the app store, I can see they have lost focus on making smooth running software and now focus only on control of their ios crap.

The only reason I can think of for random power downs are that your computer is over heating. Why don't you install these two free programs, look them up on google: "iStat Pro" which is a widget for your dashboard that shows all of your hardware's temperatures. Another program is "SMCfancontrol that you can control the speed of your fan inside the computer. These programs are not "bad" for the computer. If you notice any of your temperatures to be in the 140 degree FERENHEIT range, turn your fan on maximum speed. You may want to check the preferences for SMCfancontrol to see what the max is at. It should be around 6,000RPM.

Twitter for Mac 2.0.1 was just released in the App Store with a few bug fixes and removed the secret menu. my first update experience, too easy!

VLC putting out an application that is buggy on SL has nothing to do with Apple doing anything wrong. If finder exhibited that same behavior you might have a point, but anybody can make buggy software that only works on certain versions of an OS. Just about every developer has already properly written apps for SL by now. They've had plenty of time to fix their problems by now.

The universal control of itunes with the pause/play is actually a good feature for most people. There are other ways to customize the settings of the control though, which you don't seem to understand.

External drives mount perfectly fine on just about everyone else's MAC. You obviously have a problem with yours due to your modification of OSX or improper maintenance of it. You're alone in that respect.

SL never wakes up unless I tell it to. If you have an app that is preventing it from going to sleep or waking it like insomniac/caffeine/etc that's your own fault.

Nothing you have mentioned actually shows SL being "buggy" in any sense. Your own ignorance of OSX along with your limited knowledge of "hardware and computers" is the only problem here. Although feel free to continue being vague and unspecific about how anyone who does more than "listen to music or surf the web" might actually be able to relate to your inability to use OSX. OSX does have its own problems though, but they aren't related to a specific problem with Leopard or SL.

I just noticed you get the blue spotlight thing only if your dock is on the bottom. I keep mine on the left (I figure I have a widescreen laptop but most apps/websites don't make the most of it so may as well get the height). Keeping on the left means you get the same white dot as before.

You can change the icon to whatever you want. That's what I did for the iTunes 10 icon. Follow these directions, you can do it for more apps than just the iTunes app: http://osxdaily.com/2010/09/02/replace-the-itunes-10-icon-with-the-older-itunes-9-icon/

You will need to have the old version of the app backed up in order to retrieve the icon for it.

Is it posible the the people that have problems are "playing" with the mac for exsample : replacing 3rd party hardware.
or 3rd party software not aprove by Apple,
bottom line if you buy Apple computer but want to use it like PC just do like me PC user for the last 30 years new Apple MBP for half a year but keep both no problems at all

Calm down!

I'm sure with 5 minutes effort I could assassinate Leopard in a similar fashion.

My personal experience was that I had more problems with the Tiger to Leopard update. Snow Leopard had a few wrinkles when it was new, but the problems that affected my kit were all sorted in 10.6.1

Feel free to continue your irrational ranting about Snow Leopard. If you want a proper OS to whinge about can I suggest Windows Vista. Now that sucked big time :D.

How can I replace hardware in my iMac, unless it is the ram (the ram is the only user replaceable hardware in the iMacs.). I mean do you know what one has to do in order to get the front bezel off of the aluminum iMacs? You need specialized tools such as large suction cups to get the glass screen off first. If I wanted to void my warranty then I'd go ahead but my warranty is good until 2012. My macbook, on the other hand, is super easy to swatch out hardware. The hard drive and memory are both user replaceable, upgraded both of those with no problems. I also took off the top case, removed the heat sink, and applied a fresh bit of thermal paste (I did that because a lot of their notebooks have overheating issues related to the amount of thermal paste used on the processor chips. Apple silenced this. Go ahead and do a google search for "mac too much thermal paste.") After putting my macbook back together I no longer have temperature issues. It works better than when I got it back in 2007.

I don't have a PC but if I did I would just have ubuntu on it. I don't like windows. The file system is all jumbled and confusing and there's no "applications" folder that shows alllllllll the programs you have. And the whole "all programs" on the start icon doesn't even show ALLLLL programs.

Calm down!

yah I'm done with my rant, unless anyone else wants to try to dismiss MY problems that I have using snow leopard. Yes, windows is the real crap os, but everyone says windows 7 is so much better, so I won't say anything about that. I've never used 7 personally.

As with 'upgrading' I always do a reformat by booting up from the disc, holding C, and going into disk utility to reformat. I NEVER do 'upgrades.' Always fresh installs.

I can make a random post about a device not working with OSX as well and the culprit could be any number of things, not having anything to do with any default settings of the OS itself.

The sleep problem thread even explained how to fix your problems, which btw all suggest that modifications have been made to the OS. (ie: installing 3rd party apps that have daemons(do you even know what this is?) keeping the system awake/corrupted energy settings/smc reset/non-safari browsers/etc)

A clean install of SL wouldn't have any of these problems. You can't blame Apple for 3rd party drivers not working. That's the fault of the companies that made them. Your advanced knowledge of "hardware and computers" is definitely showing.

yes, but i am weird, i will keep the icon as thats what the designers chose and thats what most of the users will have. im just a little peeved that they went for a blue icon as sooo many mac apps have one.

so is anyone getting the continuos update Dock notification bug? i tried deleting the plist, but no avail.
