Can you elaborate the 'software related'? I thought all Toshiba SSD are broken in mid 2012 MBA.

It's clearly "broken" because of some software bug which is either repaired or not by this software update. If it can update the software, then it's fixed. If not, it informs you of this and tells you to get it replaced.

Update installed successfully.. Scared me for a second, it restarted like 4 times and on the final restart it hung and I had to hit the power button.

Same behavior for me, but once I hit the power button it started up and told me the firmware update had been successfully applied. I wonder if it just shuts it down instead of doing a restart at the end? If so, it would be nice to get some warning in advance. That was quite a nerve-wracking minute or so.

While I'm glad Apple acknowledges the problem, I still can't believe it took then this long to issue a statement and replacement program. It's been known for awhile that the Toshiba SSDs are subpar. I'm glad I live in the EU as it was a non issue to have my drive replaced, but what about you guys over in the US if you didn't get Apple Care?

Updated the firmware APPLE SSD TS128E today on my 13 mid 2012 macbook Air and ran Black Magic Speed test, I was getting 240MB/s write and 250MB/s read before the update.
Now after the firmware update I get the results 290MB/s write and 460MB/s read.

I noticed a decrease in performance of the ssd 8 months after I got the Air, but now the read speed seems to be fine. The ssd never had data corrupted.

After 15 months and 2 SSD´s replacements finally Apple acknowledges this issue. Good thing I now have a Samsung SSD with no Sandforce controller (which is the cause of the issue).

If only Apple had gone for the higher quality drives for the whole range of storage sizes this would not have happened. I'm so glad mine has the 256GB Samsung.

Firmware update has bricked my laptop! On boot, apple logo shows and for a split second a status bar before powering off. Even tried an SMC reset. Got an appointment at apple in an hour so will keep everyone posted on what they say. I'd recommend everyone backup before applying this update just in case

Updated ok

I JUST bought a 2012 Macbook Air used yesterday from someone. I had NO idea about the drive issue until I came home, reinstalled the OS, and read the update.

Thankfully it's under warranty, I have the receipt, and I bought extended applecare already.

For me, the firmware update was installed ok. It did not tell me to go get it replaced. But it is a Toshiba Drive, TS128E.

Do I need to go get it replaced? I'm going away for three weeks for work and if this thing dies, I'm kind of toast...

Corrupted backups?

It's nice to see that Apple is admitting there is a problem (retina persistence problem anyone?!)

I don't have a MacBook (yet) but this is interesting anyway.

The question is: If an HD is not reliable for some reason and I backup regularly using Time Machine, does it mean that my backups are corrupted??

Holy words!

I screwed this up (or Apple did?)

My 128 GB Toshiba SSD failed just less than a month out of warranty. Since replacing it at an authorized center costs ridiculously much money (about $1000 in Russia), I replaced it with one by OWC for $160, just this monday (more than a month after I ordered it). And now probably nobody is going to return my money. And I doubt I need a second SSD even if they agree to replace. So it’s a big screw up. Buying this MBA a couple months later would probably have saved me a lot of money and adoration for Apple.

No you don't need a replacement. If the patch applied and you did not get the message at the end telling you to get a replacement, then the patch fixed the issue on your drive.

Mine updates the firmware. Then I reboot, go back into appstore and it says the same update is available. Run the update, restart, says firmware updated. Appstore says update available. It's like groundhog day over here.

I still show the SMC wifi update no matter how many times I apply it. Are you on ML?

I would expect that something as important as a SSD replacement program is worth a front page post, and not just a Mac Blog.

Anyways, it's of course bad that faulty hardware has been used, but it is good to see that Apple is taking care of it, even outside of AppleCare.

my drive has been dead for weeks! can I say that its no longer possible to download the firmware and will they give me a replacement?
