When I click on Apps Store, I don't see the MacBook Air Flash Storage Firmware Update 1.1 listed (I'm currently 10.8.4). Does this mean my MBA (mid-2012) is not affected? In Apps Store, I do see 10.8.5 update is available. Should I download the Firmware from Apple's website and run it before I install 10.8.5?

That was discussed before. You should check the vendor of your ssd. It doesn't hurt downloading and starting it.

Great, on Friday the update say to mark a appointment to replace the hard disk, which I did. Is on Tuesday.

And today, surprise surprise, an error disk, my ssd disk is broken again.

I hope that can see that this is still to replace free of charge.

Update installed successfully.. Scared me for a second, it restarted like 4 times and on the final restart it hung and I had to hit the power button.

SAME HERE! I wish it warned about how you have to hit the power button again... this is usually a huge NO when doing firmware updates.

It does warn you, in the dialog box before you click "Restart". The text says to wait a minute before powering laptop back on.

Totally agree though, this is the first firmware update I've ever installed that didn't reboot the computer upon completion.

Has anyone actually received a data loss error?

There was a guy on page 1 of this thread (post #18) that posted a "You win! Not." screenshot.

It's great that Apple has issued a fix/replacement program for this issue, and I'm glad mine updated successfully, but I'm also wondering how much, if any, wear and/or damage our updated SSDs have sustained by using the old firmware all this time. At least there's the 3 year SSD warranty.

seriously.... this comes now?! just a couple weeks ago, exactly a few days after the 1-year warranty ended on my MBA, my SSD just died on me, and since I live in Lebanon and Apple refuses to have an official Apple Store here, Apple-related prices are sky high. So I had to pay $500+ for a replacement (mind you, I went for the 512GB once and for all). but still...

Are you sure? Even if it fails to install, it will tell you that it was installed.

The easiest way to confirm that it got installed is to check the revision number. Before it was TPVABBF0, now it is TQAABBF0.

Yep, System Information confirms TQAABBF0 here. (sorry for the late response, it was on an Air at work, not my personal machine)

For those people who have problems installing or it says it installed but it appears again in Software Update.

1. Firmware needs your Mac plugged into the wall outlet, it won't install if it is on battery, this is for safety, if the battery is nearly dead (and not plugged in) you'll could end up with a bricked Mac.

2. If you tinkered with your System the Firmware might not update.

3. Run Repair Permissions in Disk Utility.

For the sake of completeness:

4. Turn off Firevault.

5. If you run Bootcamp, make sure the primary OSX partition is selected to boot first. (That did the trick for me)

6. The manual installer seems to work more reliably?

7. If version number reads TQAABBF0: success

But I wonder, why would anyone program an installer package that tells you it has successfully updated the Firmware when it clearly failed to do so???

What does it mean when I ran it the first time and it failed, I then ran it again today because it was still showing up as an update in the App Store and now it seems to have been updated successfully. Should I take it and have Apple look at it anyways?

Has anyone received a replacement drive through Apple yet? If so, was the replacement a Samsung drive, or simply an "updated" Toshiba drive?

Interesting update on my end.

I put my old SSD in and got my laptop re-diagnosed yesterday (Monday). Unfortunately they could not simply refund the $200 I spent on my OWC drive, but they agreed to replace my old SSD.

Today I got a call from one of the employees at my local Apple store, and she informed me that the company is facing an extreme shortage of these replacement SSDs. As a result, they've decided to replace my entire laptop free of charge. I was told I could do it tomorrow (Wednesday), but reminded her that my MBA was CTO (8 gb RAM) so she said I can come in Friday and they'll replace it then.

So overall, I still wish this whole thing never happened but I'm happy that I'll be getting a new MBA as a result, missing all the dings, dirt, and light-bleed my current one has. I'm assuming it's an identical mid-2012 model, but I'm crossing my fingers (with very low expectations) that since it was CTO they might need to replace it with a newer one. A man can wish.

Will be interesting to see if people have situations similar to mine. It puzzles me why they wouldn't just remove the SSDs from said laptop they're replacing mine with; maybe it is some sort of insurance or tax write-off issue. Who knows.

Thanks for the update. It would be great if they provide you with the latest model, but most likely it will be the mid-2012 machine. Still, that's a nice move by Apple.

For anyone who's interested, OWC is accepting my drive (and the two tools I'd have needed to install it) back. 5% restocking (would have been 15% if I'd opened anything) and I cover shipping. Better than nothing, I guess.

Still waiting for Apple to tell me the replacement SSD has arrived. It's been five days.

Good to hear that OWC is working with you on this. Hope your Mac is back up and running very soon. Thanks for the update!

Any news?

My MacBook was deliver in a apple store in Germany for ssd replacement on the 22 October... And no news back from apple.

And since I don't have a a laptop just for fun this is really affecting me.

Sigh.

My SSD just failed. I now get the flashing question mark folder and am waiting for a replacement from Apple after taking it to the Genius Bar last Wed.

It failed the first firmware update, it didn't fail the diagnostics at the Apple store and now has really failed. They expected two weeks.

:(

Strangely the MBA was warm to the touch when I picked it up. Did anyone else notice this when their drive failed?

I currently have a Toshiba 128gb SSD in my 2012 MacBook Air... and everything is running okay (for now). I passed the firmware test thing (it just says "this computer does not need this update")

I have no warranty or receipt. If the HD is to die next week, next month, or in 6 months, etc... will it still be covered under this replacement program for free???

At this point I have no idea if this HD will live or die at any given moment!
