Apple Releases macOS Big Sur 11.1 With AirPods Max Support and Mac App Store Privacy Labels

Same thing except my progress bar is right at the beginning...
I had the same thing this morning, after a whole night let the update do its work. So a reboot: no progress.
Boot in Safe Mode => that worked. Reboot, no progress, progress bar right at beginning (as mentioned by hllywluis)
So I decided to reinstall Big Sur using the Recovery Mode. After 45 minutes everything worked.
Pfff, this was my first time an update didn't work.

I had no issues with unlocking my Mac with my Apple Watch before the 11.1 update. Now it won't work lol and this was one of the issues it was supposed to fix. I tried unchecking the box and re-checking the box. No avail. Not sure if it is macOS or watchOS.

Is there anyone who has installed that can test running iOS apps that are not on the Mac Store on the M1? This is such a big deal as some apps just aren't available but function well. Having the same apps available on mobile and desktop is huge.

For anyone else wondering, I bit the bullet and it looks like you can still run side loaded apps and continue to add new apps from your device. It may be checking whether that app has been downloaded on your account so you may not be able to side loaded apps that aren't available in the app store.

The ability to full screen any iOS app now is fantastic. Much needed!

Oh, you are getting that WiFi issue, too? I thought I was the only one. Since Big Sur my WiFI is doing exactly the same thing. It can run fine for a couple days, then suddenly it grinds to a halt (other devices unaffected), and only a restart sorts it out.

And as I say above, I am holding off on updating to Big Sur 11.1 for a few days at least. The slow downloads, the failed downloads, and the very slow progress bar made me abort the install on my MacBook Air (2020, Intel). I'm not liking the sound of the other complaints and issues on this forum with 11.1.
I have had the same issue and not just with wifi. My 2014 Mac Mini is hard wired and it loses the network about once a week now (down from about 2x per day with 11.0) and my 2017 Macbook Pro loses the wifi network in the same way. They both appear to stay connected but any and all network access is blocked. Only a reboot fixes it, I NEVER had this problem with Catalina and eariler.

Curious to poll you guys about Big Sur. If you already installed it, what have been your experience so far?
  • Solid, no problems at all.
  • Some hiccups, no big deal.
  • A bit rocky. Hinders work.
  • I kind of regret it. I should have waited.

Well, downloading Big Sur was obviously an absolute nightmare, as was widely reported. The first update went OK. This latest update is causing problems. Slow downloads. Stopped downloads. Progress taking forever. My WiFi just cuts out every couple of days.

Overall, Big Sur has been the most problematic OS upgrade I've experienced. It's not a disaster, but it just feels rough round the edges.

I haven't had any issues with it, except now like ash said above the installation appears to be an issue.

2019 MBP - updated successfully, but old problems resurfaced again, same as after installing the 11.01 (Handoff not working, Sidecar not working, as if the computer has logged out of iCloud but it hasn't - had to log out of iCloud and log back in, which is a major hassle).

2019 MBA - unable to update at all, "The computer has restarted because of a problem" on every single attempt at installing 11.1.

2019 i9 iMac. I went through this with Catalina, made it to senior apple engineers that confirmed the issue was the OS not the hardware. GPU drivers were at fault. It was fixed with the 5th update to Catalina (10.15.5). Now its back with Big Sur, which they probably didn't merge the fix in to Big Sur.
My 2019 MBP16 was still getting KPs on wake from deep sleep, unplugged, as of the time I traded it in to Apple.
But it could have been a similar situation where it was resolved in 10.15.5 and came back in 11.0.

The only thing I noticed between this update and the initial release a month ago, it is slightly slower, not by much. Is anybody noticed any difference performance-wise? Apple needs to trim the fat off their OS. Yes I do have a fusion drive, I only got this back 27" iMac back in July, bumped it up from 32 GB to 64 GB. I will change it when I see this drive shows signs of failing and will get a SSD.

With a 2020 13" Intel MBP, 11.1 is breaking the connection with my AirPods Pro when I watch a movie with IINA and press pause. It still shows me connected, but I have to manually take off the bluetooth connection and reenable it. PITA. So far, I think 11.0.1 was running better...

... but Safari feel snappier 😂

PS I logged this issue with Apple feedback

What are the crash symptoms? An error message? A blank screen.

I should warn you that the update restarts the computer several times and - sometimes - between activity the screen goes completely black for a good minute or so before it picks up again. You could be forgiven for thinking that the computer was dead.

In my opinion - and I've mentioned this before - that kind of behaviour is a UX fail on Apple's part. The user should never be left wondering.
As I've said before, the update process has very poor user feedback. It would not take a lot of effort to make it much better.

That was the same for me, too. Except Apple Support insisted I should copy the files over manually from a local "Archive" folder iCloud created when it was turned off. And now everything is screwed up with duplicates, things that weren't downloaded being overwritten in the cloud because the local version didn't have everything.
Apple Support at its finest. You'd be better off asking for help here.

Question: This version number is a departure from history. Aren't tenth decimal places usually for the yearly revisions?

10.1-10.15 etc then the hundredth spot for patches? Is Apple going to move to yearly number releases now? 11, 12 13 etc?

Yep. I knew it at the time, too, but I thought maybe they knew more about the intricacies of iCloud Drive than I would (or the forum). Ultimately we ended up removing iCloud, cancelling everything, and setting it back up to allow it to download from iCloud (which was up to date still). Seems like if you want to use iCloud Drive for Desktop and Documents (which there are definitely reasons to), you should make sure (if you don't already) to have recent backups or Time Machine backups. Nothing unusual here (and thankfully I did). But instead of troubleshooting if something goes wrong, it's almost better to reset everything and let it redownload it all.
