It's likely that this macOS update contains more than just the patch to WebKit.

In fact, Apple has released standalone Safari updates in the past, both to the current version of macOS as well as previous versions of macOS.

Note that Apple has rarely released a macOS/iOS update to patch a single issue. In the past two decades, this has only happened a couple of times in my recollection and yes, those patches were quite small.
Yes, WebKit was the reason for the hot fix, but I'm sure there were other targets of opportunity. Not that they'll necessarily tell us. :)

Yeah, found two new bugs.

Checked all my reported bugs, nothing is fixed. Especially issues with rebooting/shutting down and external display.

Also the same processes which are crashing every minute are still crashing with 11.2.3. CVMServer and cloudd one of the most here.

Can someone please confirm that rosetta is still available on m1 in the US. I guess I will install it if it still has rosetta. Also, I hear people have been having problems with it installing. Anyone had it install no problems whatsoever on their m1?

Rosetta still works. It wasn't removed with 11.2.3.

Small improvement with palm rejection. Instead of both meaty parts of my palm that can move the mouse pointer it's now just one meaty part but still worse than a $500 Windows laptop. Buggiest piece of hardware/OS I've used recently.

The interesting thing about this Safari update is that it did not require quitting Safari! haha!

But in reality it did, because Safari immediately started acting all buggy and not responding, so maybe a better installer next time?

PS: I really avoid reboots, so I'm hoping I will not have to reboot just from a minor Safari update.

Can someone please confirm that Rosetta is still available on M1 in Germany?

It's crazy that we have to ask things like that here.

I keep seeing this around here. What's the deal with Rosetta being removed? I thought it would stay for a while during the transition, so at least in all of the Big Sur point releases and maybe 12.0/whatever it'll be called.

It’s absurd to me that patching the browser requires an OS update. I mean, come on Apple, you created the App Store, a seemingly perfect tool for update single applications like this without requiring a reboot 🤔

That's not entirely the case though. WebKit is relevant to more than just Safari. Any app that uses a standard WebView will get that web view from the WebKit library in the OS. So issues in WebKit are not isolated to Safari, but any program on the Mac that uses system provided web frameworks. Apps like Chrome of course come with their own solution, but many apps that just want to show a small web view and aren't themselves web browser will just use the system provided WebView.

That said, upgrading such a component can also be done more smoothly usually, more akin to upgrading your brew packages with a quick reboot or just ensuring there's no open file descriptors pointing to the old files

I'm still getting kernel panics when I connect my M1 MBP to my Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Dock Pro and attempt to use it in Clamshell mode. This is after updating to today's macOS 11.2.3 update. I filed FB9035839. I pretty much can't use it with my external drives or monitor. Which means I can't access my external drive's media. And my Channels DVR isn't there. Huge bummer. Belkin does say in their support pages that it supports the M1 Macs. And it worked fine up until today's update.

EDIT:: 3 kernel panics total now since updating to macOS 11.2.3, but I think it's 'ok' now..

Apple today released macOS Big Sur 11.2.3, the fifth update to the macOS Big Sur operating system that launched in November. macOS Big Sur 11.2.3 comes two weeks after the release of macOS 11.2.2, a bug fix update.

The new ‌‌‌‌‌macOS Big Sur‌‌‌‌ 11.2.3 update can be downloaded for free on all eligible Macs using the Software Update section of System Preferences.

Apple says that macOS Big Sur 11.2.3 introduces important security updates and should be installed by all users, with an additional support document clarifying that the software addresses WebKit vulnerability that could allow maliciously crafted web content to execute code.

Apple has also released a new version of Safari (14.0.3) for macOS Catalina and macOS Mojave users.

Apple tries to secure its devices from malware etc. and people are concerned about the size/time of the download? What about the effort/time to repair if the updates weren't released? I don't understand the nature or logic of some complaints.

LOL. If you are waiting for Rosetta to go away in the US, you’ll likely need to wait until 2025 or 2026.

Complaining about download size has been standard for many of the MR regulars, unfortunately. Some people look for reasons to complain over minutia.

Someone found a string in the OS, which has actually been there since last december, that says something like “Rosetta won’t run in this region.” There has been no hint that this ability to region-disable Rosetta has been used, will be used, and even less of a suggestion as to which regions those may be, other than the logical inference that it would be disabled if required by law, as per due to export restrictions.

All the rest is paranoia by people who assume that Apple will immediately remove rosetta in the United States, Europe, and asian countries where most mac sales occur, because Apple is allegedly that assinine.

And now my FaceTime camera light stays on even when FT isn't the active window, oh well back to the drawing board.
