I will never understand how an operating system cannot be made secure against memory corruption. They tried so many things but... this simplest of all exploits still works... in 2021... just like it did in the 1970ies...

That being said - government builds backdoors into all software and the backdoors are usually disguised as "bugs".

Just to chime in that I don't doubt it doesn't work for you - but I just started using a 4K Pro Art monitor with an M1 MacBook Air. My first screen bigger then 15" in over a decade. And I've been surprised at how well it works. It can be a pain point figuring out the exact order or which to power things on, but in general it works pretty flawlessly with my Air in clamshell mode. Even the USB hub built into the monitor works with another USB hub hanging off that. No crackling speakers here. I appreciate this doesn't help your situation but just to let you know it does work for some.
I know. All these issues are not unique to me and the fact they didn’t exist before I upgraded is worrying. I’m not that surprised anymore given Apple’s inability to develop solid software in the past 3-4 years.

My iMac 27" no longer turns the display off when idle (10 minutes). Thanks a lot updates. Had to mess with Mission Control / Hot Corners. Annoying but fixable.

Hmm.. the same with my MBP13 2020(intel), but on 11.5...

This update brought my macbook air to a grinding halt. No even an apple technician can figure it out

How is it, that after all these years, apple still can't get time remaining estimates right? Maybe time moves slower in Cupertino and minutes are hours?

seriously, the 10 minutes remaining is more like 30 on every machine I've done

This is where gigabit speed comes in handy!
You'd think so, but I'm on 5G which I tested recently at 500Mbit, update is coming off at 65Mbit.

Its 3.8GB on a Mac Mini M1 which apparently I'm running 11.4 as it never told me there was an update.

Tell me about it. Their insistence on moving everyone over to MDM has been frustrating, because now we need third party tools to manage our Macs that we could manage with entirely first party tools, locally, before.
Apple‘s end goal is eliminating local account, local storage and everything local. They want all devices connected to each other, 24*7 unless the battery is dead or the power is down. Even so they are still connected for days until the last bit of juice is gone.

Just an update. I recently switched to powered studio monitor speakers. A massive upgrade from my cheap Logitech speakers I'd had for years. and found a weird crackle sound of buzzy interference whenever I scrolled in windows. I narrowed it down to it happening when the Mac is drawing power from the monitor. It's fine on battery or being powered with a separate charger.

It's actually worked out well as even though I now use both USBC ports when docked to avoid the issue I have more USB sockets free on the monitor now. I also found that sound is cleaner plugged straight into the MacBook Air rather then into the monitor headphone. Not sure this helps your situation but wanted to update you on my experience.

Interesting! Thanks for sharing. I’ll have another play around and see if anything has changed.

Anyone else have a scare after the update? It rebooted about three times, I was worried it was in a boot loop but left it alone. On the last boot it black screened, power cycling the monitor, unplugging it and plugging it back in, nothing.

Fortunately I saw I could ping the Mac, started an SSH session from my PC and triggered a reboot. Everything has been fine since.

I seem to be getting less flickering over HDMI at 4K (maybe just due to unplugging HDMI and plugging it back in?), but its certainly not gone.

I'm still waiting for the "it just works" experience that Mac users were telling me about for years. ;)
