Why does Apple do this? Is it because Apple wants full control on what is allowed to be installed or not on a Mac?

I’ve shell-shock from it! Seems like a horrid encore we’re having now.

I’ll never forget having to pay to update my iPod touch back during it I swear it was awful. Gave up and done it that weekend, total unmitigated disaster.
And when you think, back then, downloads were mostly slower and there is much more infrastructure now... yet we're still struggling to download an OS all this time later. Most console/PC games have updates bigger than this! Look at CoD for example...

Officially it's for security. But actually.. I'm sure that's also a reason. They can theoretically block every third party app if they want. And for those who don't know how to block the requests, they cannot use those apps anymore. It's actually quite frightening that this is a thing. But actually... not surprising at all from Apple.

They're probably planning to lock down the mac as they did with the iPad/iPhone.

The Panic Twitter account just said: “This issue now appears to be resolved. Please enjoy our Nova and Transmit updates! (And to the Apple engineers who undoubtedly just had one heck of a wild day: thank you for your service)” (“This issue” referred to the whole issue with the Apple servers checking app loads.)

I just entered Internet Recovery and it’s offering me Catalina when I try to do a fresh install of Big Sur. WHY!?
