If you're having trouble getting back in after coming from sleep mode and your screen doesn't come on turn off HDR mode, I turned it off and it worked normally again.

It's still amazing that FaceTime signaling is done client-to-client instead of from the server. That's a serious security issue, and is probably why Apple never was able to open-source FaceTime like Steve promised back in the day.

Apple today released a supplemental update to macOS Catalina 10.15.4, two weeks after releasing the macOS Catalina 10.15.4 update with Screen Time Communication Limits and Real-Time Apple Music lyrics.

macos-catalina-wallpaper.jpg

The macOS Catalina 10.15.4 Supplemental Update can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for free using the Update feature in the System Preferences app.

The new software introduces a fix that caused Mac computers running macOS Catalina 10.15.4 to be unable to participate in FaceTime calls with devices running iOS 9.3.6 and earlier or OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 and earlier.

Apple says it also addresses an issue with Office 365 accounts, fixes a bug that could cause a USB-C port to become unresponsive, and addresses a problem that caused the 2020 MacBook Air to hang during Setup Assistant or when connecting or disconnecting a 4K or 5K display. Full release notes for the update are below:macOS Catalina 10.15.4 could be one of the last updates to the macOS Catalina operating system as Apple transitions to working on macOS 10.16, which is unnamed as of yet.

I hope Apple makes the decision to just "camp" on the island for another year instead of going somewhere else so they can just get this OS stable instead of introducing 10.16. Social distancing on Catalina island might be good for the OS.. :)

They really need a two year cycle on major OS versions - Catalina is still broken in many ways and they will simply move on instead of fixing it. I have been using Macs since System 6.0.3 on a Mac IIcx in 1989 and the current OS cycle is a mess. I miss Steve Jobs every day.

Well, there must be more than just a FaceTime bug fix in this puppy, as it had to be one of the most involved (hardware resets, screen blanking, etc.) and time consuming updates I ever installed in nearly 20 years as an Apple user. Someone mentioned storage issues, maybe that was fixed as well?

Whyyyyyyy doe apple remove all entries from /etc/auto_master with every Catalina release?

It's not a huge deal, but it's definitely a pain in the ass.

Of course I understand. Updates to current software die down right about now so Apple can refine and fix the new version.

Internally, we branched from our Major upcoming release [OS X a good 3 months before we released and started on the next one] and that's been going on since the first release of OS X and it was how we did it at NeXT.

I really wish Apple would push out a supplemental update for the kernel panic issue. I haven’t had any issues with Catalina until 10.15.4, now regular kernel panics during sleep. This is on a clean install of 10.15.4 as I thought it would be stable by now.

I thought I was alone in this issue...my 2019 27" iMac has been rebooting showing kernel panics almost daily when left on with external hard drives plugged in. I thought it was an issue with my CalDigit USB-C hub but maybe not...

How is that a security issue? If anything it makes it more secure - there is no man in the middle for an issue to arise. FT is encrypted end-to-end, no one but the sender/receiver can decrypt the call. Adding a centralized server to this doesn't break this end-to-end encryption, but it certainly adds another vector for security and privacy issues.

I'm shocked and frustrated that Apple doesn't address this in the 10.15.4 Supplemental Update... This has got to be impacting many professional users!

I jumped through huge hoops to reinstall with 10.15.3 today to fix the kernel-panic/lockup that strikes when accessing external storage (ThunderBay 6, SoftRaid XT). I was getting hard locks randomly when hitting disks, even if it wasn't the RAID-5 TB6 -- just moving files from the MBP 15" SSD to an external SSD, both APFS formatted.

It's been a HUGE pain... first I thought it was the RAID -- took days chasing that down, multiple wipe/restores/verification passes... then I saw the original bug report on MacRumors re: KP's with 10.15.4... I moved the TB6 to a Mac mini also running 10.15.4 to verify the problem was also striking there (without any MBP-related power/nap/sleep complications), and it was indeed...

Apple didn't have 10.15.3 available to grab via Terminal, either...

The good news is that (if you can "track down" a working 10.15.3 full installer), installing over either 10.15.4 OR 10.15.5b1 works fine. Both of my Macs are back and running w/o problem on the same set of discs... I've moved many TB's of data in the last 5 hours since I rolled it back with no issues.

I will not be applying this or any other Catalina updates until this issue has been confirmed to be fixed.

So you’re saying... you didn't have a backup to revert to?

I assume most things will get fixed going to 10.16 but new stuff will be broken. The sad part is the folks that are on EOL hardware and 10.15 is the last update they will get.....

I attempted to install the update but about halfway through my computer shut down and it bricked my 2018 13 inch MacBook. No power, no fans coming on and off or anything when pressing and holding the power button. It was plugged and fully charged while updating. Anyone else having this problem? Also attempted to do a SMC reset to no avail still won't turn on. I am sending it in for repair. I would hold off updating unless you want to risk losing your computer for a week.

My family is from Santa Catalina and they aren’t welcoming visitors at this time! 😄

Yeah and it may not be compatible with my Mac so I am in no hurry for it to be released.
I think it's very unlikely that a point release won't be compatible with your Mac.

I hope the upcoming 10.15.5 update fixes the stability issues (Kernel Panics) I've seen in Catalina.

We will almost certainly see one more point release before 10.16 releases since that’s still about 5 months away.

we will likely see two more point releases given Apple’s release history. All versions of MacOS since El Capitan have been updated to a .6 release, which makes sense: Apple releases every two months a point release and releases a new version after (6x2=)12 months.

So frustrating. Have reported EVERY Panic, but Apple don't seem to be doing anything to fix it.
