Yes, installing a software update will continue to correctly replace system files that you might have randomly changed.
well...i just installed the combo of 10.5.6 and nothing. Also i didn't change anything on the system files.

They won't do either. Supplemental updates are not re-rolled into a prior combo update. Depending on what they are, they *may* be rolled into an updated full installer.

Ah, interesting. So I guess if I reinstall Catalina via ⌘-R, that's when I'll get it bundled in.

The 10.15.5 combo update contains the 10.15.5 Supplemental update. I know because I used the 10.15.5 combo update.

Exactly. I did the same thing and was able to confirm that the 10.15.5 Combo Update contains the 10.15.5 Supplemental Update due to the different build numbers (before and after).

I don't remember whether or not Apple changed the "Post Date" on their 10.15.5 Combo Update webpage after they silently released the newer 10.15.5 Combo Update that contained the 10.15.5 Supplemental Update.

Does anyone remember if Apple changed the "Post Date" on their 10.15.5 Combo Update webpage after they silently released the newer 10.15.5 Combo Update that contained the 10.15.5 Supplemental Update?

Yes, the post date was changed. 10.15.5 was originally released on 5/26. The 10.15.5 Supplemental was released on 6/1. The post date for the 10.15.5 combo is 6/1.

This is for those perusing this thread to learn about potential issues with updates or safety thereof. I updated last night through Software Update without issue and have tested since to confirm stability. (2.8GB download)

Update times (not including download time):
10.15.5 --> 10.15.6 = 27 minutes (7-17-20)
10.15.6 --> 10.15.6 Supp = 24 minutes (8-13-20)

This update did something at the end that has never happened before. At about 23 minutes, the final update progress bar went black with the screen and then nothing (fans still running). I waited a few minutes and pressed space bar and my desktop appeared, fully booted, no log-in required. Yea, a little strange.

I cannot find any firmware that was updated and can confirm through a command line check that the Kernel version stays the same v19.6.0, but as noted by abecker upstream, the date was backdated to what he shows.

As a side note, now that Catalina appears to be as stable as Mojave was for me, I have now Smart Updated my SuperDuper! Mojave clone to Catalina with out issues. It created the two volumes (system and data) without issue and boots with no issues.

Good luck to all 🤞

Sometimes they are. The combo updater available through Software Update includes the supplemental update.

umm.. fixes VM crash issues ? This could be all those users on VMWare communities are hoping for.

Hi guys, im running Mojav on an i9 2019 iMac. Would it be worth upgrading to Catalina or wait til big sur comes out?
only use it for video and photo editing, don’t do emails or surfing the web with it.
thanks in advance.

what the hell is happening ? Every supplemental update i install...everytime my wallpaper boot is changing to the original Catalina one. Will a combo of 10.5.6 install fix the issue, or...?

Desktop pictures seem rather buggy in Catalina.

I just tested this. I could've sworn I had a custom one just last week. It's back to Catalina's.

So I went to System Preferences, Desktop & Screensaver, and it shows a question mark. OK, so it doesn't know where the picture went either? I scroll down the outline view, but this is a weird selection of albums that doesn't seem to be quite the one Photos has.

So I launch Photos instead, pick one, and drag it in. Weird, that's quite low-quality. And indeed, there's a notification that it has been exported with low quality, and to first save it instead. OK, why doesn't macOS just… do that for me? Fine, let's do this. Drag it to the Finder, then to System Preferences.

Now, there's a drop-down that says Fill Screen. I pick Fit to Screen instead. Weird, that changes nothing. I try out other options. They do absolutely nothing. I'm pretty sure this image has nowhere near the proportions the screen does. Oh well, looks fine.

I quit System Preferences. On a lark, I relaunch it. There's a question mark again.

What a mess.

I then checked the build number and it was the same: 19G73.

I updated the supplemental via System Preferences, Software Update. I'm showing macOS 10.15.6 Build 19G2021.
My understanding with all versions, the .6 is final, does not get updated. If you save, you need .6 and the last released Supplemental.

Hmmm still no updated 10.15.6 combo or full installer.
Hey is the reason you guys are wanting the combo is for safety and you prefer to overwrite all the system files each time you update? I have only used a combo once after a sketchy update. I think Apple is overwriting way more unchanged files than they used to with the standard Software Update. I'm guessing that's why their "patched" updates are so big now and take so long to install. Here is what I saw after the last two updates just in the system Applications (Apple default apps):

10.15.6 --> 10.15.6 Supp:
254 Apple applications changed Modification date, but no change in version

10.15.5 --> 10.15.6:
87 Apple applications changed Modification date with some version changes

The full installer was updated several days ago. The updates received through Software Update are also now including the supplemental update.

I just looked and the date for the 10.15.6 combo still is 7/15 and the date for the 10.15.6 in the MAS shows 1 month ago. I generally don't use the System Preferences software update to update ate macOS.

The updaters don’t appear to have been rereleased but regardless of what the date in the App Store shows, downloading the full installer gets you the newer version of 10.15.6.

Thanks for the heads up. Yes, it appears the 10.15.6 Supplemental Update has been rolled into the 10.15.6 full installer. I suspect that this might be the last point release for Catalina and that could be why Apple has not rolled out a re-release of the 10.15.6 Combo Update.

7/15 10.15.6 Combo Update:
Darwin Family-MacBook-Pro.local 19.6.0 Darwin Kernel Version 19.6.0: Sun Jul 5 00:43:10 PDT 2020; root:xnu-6153.141.1~9/RELEASE_X86_64 x86_64

Is "Jun 18" the correct date?

If so, why is the date of the new one weeks earlier than the old one?

Does anyone have a link to the new Combo Update with the new Supplemental Update integrated into it?

Quick question: by "full installer", do you guys mean the one that you download from the App Store? Or the one that you get when you go into Recovery Mode? [Or both…? 😅]
