it seems there is at least 2 issues, discovered after the update (by multiple users):
- login screen is default again (no more custom user's background)
- display mirroring broken (wired)
I wouldn't expect the first to be an issue, but by design. The second... my external monitor didn't work after the update but all I had to do was open the laptop and close it again.

So, never, then? Verified by whom? What do you think you mean by "stable"?

Verified by users who use it for awhile and are willing to share their experience. There are a few of those types around these parts if you look around.

I’d consider it stable if the consensus of said users point to no serious problems after upgrade.

How many versions into Catalina are we now, and people are still reporting concerning issues with core applications and basic functions such as Mail and wake/sleep?

Hope that helps you comprehend what I thought was a pretty straightforward sentence to understand.

You hit it right on the money. Its hilarious how he tries to affirm his belief that Big Sur will be superior to Catalina(Catalina of TODAY)
Catalina at this present stage is an excellent operation system and is very well optimized. Big Sur will need at LEAST 6 months to be considered anything as "Stable" and that is always the way its been with new OS Systems. i said it earlier in this thread, any person updating to Big Sur on release date is essentially a "Beta" tester for Apple because the only way Apple can make Big Sur better over time is by rolling it out to the masses and refining it as time goes by when issues arise with usage from millions of users around the world.

What does
Bash:
pmset -g assertions
show? You're looking for any processes that "prevent" sleep. I know I had the same issue and it was tied to HID (some USB device driver or util) and my use of Apple's 'AU Lab' with an AudioUnit plugin to boost output volume (go figure… audio preventing sleep). Some apps stupidly, wildly grab assertions… for little reason.
I will take a look and post later, when I can swap the other SSD back in. It was doing it on a completely fresh Catalina install with no third-party apps installed.

Do you guys think we’ll get an update for Logic Pro x and Final Cut Pro x today or perhaps this week once today’s Apple event is over?

Dunno. But I'm hoping that Universal Audio update their 'legacy' audio drivers sometime soon, because they won't work with Bg Sur. And the release date for that must be getting perilously close now.

Late to the game, but maybe you'll see this. This a fresh Catalina copy with nothing installed except 1password.

The ‌‌‌‌macOS Catalina‌‌‌‌ 10.15.7 Supplemental Update can be downloaded from the Mac App Store using the Update feature in the System Preferences app.

According to Apple's release notes, the Supplemental Update improves the security of macOS and is recommended for all users. An Apple support document outlines several vulnerabilities that that have been addressed, including those that leave the Mac vulnerable to malicious fonts and applications.

macOS Catalina will soon be replaced by macOS Big Sur, which is in the final stages of beta testing and could be released as soon as next week.

I haven't upgraded to Catalina yet, because of formatting issues. Should I just skip it all together and wait for Big Sur?

Formatting issues? Did you do something tricksy to get High Sierra or Mojave installed on a HFS filesystem, or are you still running Sierra?

If you're on Mojave, stay there unless you have some need for something on Catalina's feature list. Mojave will be receiving security patches for at least another year, while security patches aren't going to fix Catalina. Perhaps by the time Big Sur gets to the .6 (maybe by WWDC 2021) it will be worth installing.

Another Mojave holdout looking to skip Catalina here. I too am waiting for the right time to jump into Big Sur.

Someone said earlier on this thread (or maybe another) that even if you want to go from Mojave to Big Sur, it’s advisable to upgrade to Catalina as a safer middle step. Is this true?

I use Mojave at home. Work just put me on Catalina. No dashboard. Podcast app is an unintuitive mess. Locked files when copying out to to a network drive. 10.15.7 is a downgrade and absolute garbage by comparison. Skip it.

Nah, Big Sur is broken no matter the method. Never install a .0, that should be obvious. And it's getting to the point any more that the last thing you want to do is do any sort of upgrade install, always wipe and install cold.

The Entitled won't do that, of course, because that would mean they should be making backups, which they will never do.
