I'm getting kernel panics too on startup.

In fact I can't log in using the clamshell mode that I have used for over a decade.

I have to open the laptop, log in, acknowledge the kernel crash, then shut the lid and continue as before with the external display and Caldigit TS4.

Terrible - is Apple too cash-poor to do basic testing?
Just curious- what kind of external display do you have?

NEC EA244UHD connected as

(MacBook) -> thunderbolt -> Caldigit TS4 -> Display port (display)

it's a 24" 4K display
Interesting- I have an LG Ultrafine 4k, also 24" which is a pretty unusual size. But mine is connected via Thunderbolt directly to display. I hope that they fix it and some how let us know that it's fixed because now I'm afraid to ever "upgrade" again. That was rough to reinstall Ventura. Not quite as simple as Dr. Mac made it seem. Lots of setting and weird driver issues to tweak even though I had a perfect backup.

I have been testing Sonoma on an external SSD and it needs more RAM than Ventura.
It is not compatible with my Acasis thunderbolt but works with a Samsung T7.
I am not sure whether the Acasis enclosure or the Samsung 980 Pro inside it is the culprit.

is the RAM requirement significantly higher? 50% 100%?

I was running 19-20 GB with my production stuff and now it's 21-22 GB. I assume that some of that is the wallpapers and some is the on-screen widgets. I have 32 GB of RAM on this systems so it's not a problem. If it is, I just move programs to my old Intel iMac with another 32 GB of RAM. None of my systems ever swap - I have 3 main Macs that I use and they all have 32 GB of RAM.

70% of that sounds like a serious bug in Sonoma. Have others reported such issues too?
I've got an M1 MBP with 16GB of Memory and have been testing Sonoma all Summer. Haven't had these type of issues. But one thing to note, You could have 192GB of Memory and your Mac WILL USE IT ALL. That is normal. I've also got a Mac mini (Intel 2018) with 64GB of RAM and very regularly have between 3-10GB of Free Memory while only using a small handful of apps.

The 16GB in my MBP has not been an issue.

The Sonoma 14.0 update on my base M2 MBA went smoothly. I like the desktop widgets and new wallpaper. The dictation feature with typing looks promising. So, far so good.....no problems yet.

I cannot see any practical difference at all.

Here's my stats over the last 30 days, M2 MacBook Air, 24 GB RAM.

I installed Sonoma the 26th, and my usage since then has been fairly typical.

Something is now preventing me from unlocking my Mac. Looks like it's taking my Password but then I get the spinning circle and then after a brief moment it reverts back to the screensaver. I've had to hard reboot twice today, now looking like 3 times. This is probably screwing something else up, too.. Wonderful. Steer Clear of this one folks...

I've "resolved" this by deselecting the option to use my Apple Watch to unlock my Mac mini.

Meanwhile on my M1 MBP, I've noticed TODAY that my curser is randomly just disappearing on me. I've gotta swipe up to get to Mission Control and then swipe down to see the curser again. I've been on this build since RC2 was released and this happens today?? Weird...

I really like being able to click on the desktop and having the open apps move out of the way. Then click again and the apps reappear. Very nice feature.

I spoke too soon. I even made sure to not even be wearing my Watch as to not trigger whatever issue.. It lets me enter the Password, and then I still get the spinning circle. Looks like everything is completely frozen because it just dings at me. Clicking anywhere on the WiFi Icon or Keyboard icon in the top right corner does nothing but ding at me. I've tried to remotely SSH into it via Terminal and reboot it but get an Error that no SSH connections are being allowed, even though I've confirmed in Sharing that it IS allowed. So now it'll be the fourth hard reboot, making sure to unplug all of my External Drives before powering on and then reconnecting manually one at a time.

Once I'm logged back in I'll leave it be until Morning and then I'll try reinstalling (again). Was really hoping we'd get a newer build than the RC2 when Sonoma was officially released. Builds kept getting worse and worse, and I remember this being the case last year with Ventura and then the year before with Monterey.

And for those of you wondering if I've filed Feedback for this, Yup! Even though none of the Feedback I've filed since 2019 has been acknowledged in any way at all, I still keep filling more and more as the bugs come up.

Just updated and all seems smooth so far. Apple watch unlocked it the first time I tried after the install. Used password once and since then all is working well. (Mac Studio)

Here's the first bug I've faced with Sonoma so far.. :(

Out of nowhere, my Mac audio stopped working completely. I was trying to watch some videos but there was no sound coming at all even though my Mac was at max volume. And no, I do not use any headphones or audio accessories with my Mac.

A reboot has fixed it for me. But that was a little strange..

macOS Sonoma has the worst out of the gate memory management since OSX 10.7 Lion. If you have a Mac with only 8gb DO NOT upgrade until/unless they fix this. My base M2 MBA runs in the yellow on memory pressure at idle with no open apps and I installed it fresh from scratch. It's been installed for 24 hours to the initial "initialization" stuff is long done. Do with this what you will.
Well I stand corrected, the past couple days it seems like the is the most memory efficient macOS that I've used. Fingers crossed it stays this way.
