Mac mini with monitor? Not the same but a viable alternate for many. In fact, I prefer separate. Biggest downside for me is not having built in camera and mic. Keep answering the phone on the mini and crickets.
I am the opposite, I despise built in cameras and mics. I would prefer to use external ones that I can completely disconnect and not worry about them.

Question here for everyone.. is it still cleaner to do the full USB (previously the combo) installer versus the in-place upgrade? I ask because I'm coming from Monterey on a 2021 16" MBP (Silicon).

I have the full installer package downloading now, but I'm wondering if the old method of reformat/install/restore via TM backup is still preferred for a clean install.

BL.
I believe it's a lot more difficult with Apple Silicon as I asked the same thing when Ventura was released and there were some concerns. What I do is perform the upgrade, then erase all content and settings, then set up as new.

I have an iMac and a Mac Studio and I prefer the neat and tidy desk with fewer cables for power and connectivity. The iMac speakers are much better than the Anker speakers on my desk. I record videos of the iMac as I don't have a videocam on the Studio. I bought the 2015 27 inch iMac for $200 a few months ago and that's a great deal for 5k monitor, videocam, microphones, speakers, Apple keyboard and mouse. And I got a computer with it. I do my office stuff on the iMac and my production stuff on the Studio.

No one going to mention that the text input cursor now is thicker (with some rounded endings?) and follow the accent color set in Settings -> Appearance?

And the crap-lo… eh, sorry caps-lock warning you get next to the cursor. :)

My life depends on Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. I don't have the gut to install this just yet. Better wait for at least a month. It's tempting though.

If your life depends on software (and that applies to a lot of us), set up a testing plan for new operating system updates and new application software updates. I have a spare machine to do testing of new versions of macOS, new versions of application software and security updates and I always test on that system before installing on my production systems.

If you don't have a spare system for testing, set one up on an external SSD so that you can test your workflow when there are updates.

Yes. I reverted to Ventura- total pain, but back to no kernel panics now. Reported to apple as well.

Thanks for responding! I'm running a Motu 8Pre USB and your post has been most helpful (was thinking of upgrading to Sonoma, but i'm gonna hold off for a while, since I too use Logic Pro).

Glad Ventura is still working well for you, cheers!

On Mac mini M1 now cannot see iPhone (using USB cable) for backup. What's up?
If you haven't already solved this.
I've had it take a long time - 30-60 minutes for a iPhone or iPad to show up sometimes on my M1 Mac mini running Ventura.
If the USB ports work for any other device (plug in a USB stick, or stuff like that to test), it's likely something specific with the background process that handles the mobile device connection (iOS)

I've had this problem in the past and just killed the background process and then it restarts and starts working again.

Yes after a while - like an hour - my stuff started showing up. Then copied libraries iMovie to an HD and copied to MB air. This all so I can work on vid while traveling connecting to an HD.

I am thinking it takes a while for stuff to sync. At first - no way - then a while later it's Apple boink.

Good idea but not for me- limited. I think Sonoma takes a while to accrete. Finally got external HDs recognized.

Update: I moved the Motu Ultralite MK5 to a port on the MacBook Pro and I'm still getting kernel panics on wake from sleep. So it's gotta be a problem related to the LG ultrafine monitor or with the Anker USBC hub attached to it. Doesn't happen when just the motu is connected so can rule that out. Reverting. I don't think I've had to revert an OS in at least a decade and I pretty much always go with the .0 version. Kernel panics never happened on this machine until today; until Sonoma. Not once.
I'm getting kernel panics too on startup.

In fact I can't log in using the clamshell mode that I have used for over a decade.

I have to open the laptop, log in, acknowledge the kernel crash, then shut the lid and continue as before with the external display and Caldigit TS4.

Terrible - is Apple too cash-poor to do basic testing?

You know what I don't like about the reaction feature? No one actually will answer the question. I asked a question and got a bit of a smart-aleck response:

I ended up searching and found that if you click on Reduce transparency in the accessibility settings, that will darken the menu somewhat. It's not a perfect solution but it's something at least.

I do appreciate the likes/reactions though, I just wish someone had answered without making me feel dumb for not knowing Mac Basics. :(
Forums can be rough. I agree with what you are saying, and your response it spot on!

Sonoma has been working well on my 2022 Studio so far, but I have to agree with the person earlier in this thread about the memory management. Sonoma seems to eat more RAM compared to Ventura. I have 64GB and never once touched swap in Ventura. I've already touched swap in Sonoma (in less than a week). Not a huge deal, but it is worth noting.

Any idea to what applications or processes you used caused some swap to occur with a 64 GB config? Presently using 7.1 beta.

Nope (although I must admit I have not investigated this fully). I doing everything exactly the same as before. The only thing that is sort of new is I have been playing the mac version of Balder's Gate 3, but I also played it on Ventura without swap being touched.

I've done some experiments with Sonoma running programs that should put it into swap with the reported memory usage but it doesn't. It almost seems like Activity Monitor isn't reporting memory use correctly or it's reporting it late. Sometimes it takes a long time for released memory to show up. I have not had any swap even though I started up a program that should have resulted in swap given the amount of RAM in use.

Again, not a huge issue IMHO, but I thought it was worth mentioning (since I saw it brought up in this thread). I've never hit swap on either my 2013 Pro or 2022 Studio (both have 64GB) so I thought it was odd.
