I'm a bit disappointed...

The Mighty Mouse Wireless had horrible tracking and was very inexact, near frustrating to use actually.

Apple didn't really fix this in the Magic Mouse, I gave it a whirl at the store and I found that it still is "fuzzy" at best. (Yes I tried multiple ones)

It could of course be the wooden surface that apple has in their stores, but they would likely choose the most suitable surface for their mice to work on.

I guess there is only one way to find out: buy one and see how it works in the long run, and if it doesn't work, then I'll just throw it in a box with the mighty mouse :p ...

It takes more like a minute for me, though Snow Lepoard is better. Then I have to reload Firefox, Thunderbird, Sunbird, iTunes, OpenOffice, Preview, Stickies, the dashboard, any documents I had open in the above programs, and shuffle things to the right virtual desktop space. Once that is done, opening programs I use less frequently takes longer the first time. One program that uses Java will take a good 30 seconds to start after a reboot, but no more than 3-5 seconds if it is cached in RAM. Matlab and VMWare will both take over a minute if I need to open either of those.

On top of that, Firefox forgets all my logged in sessions after rebooting, even things where I chose "remember me on this computer". There is probably something wrong with my FF configuration, but I don't know how to fix it, and it is annoying, and it is another reason not to reboot.

I almost forgot about spotlight indexing, which will often run if I haven't rebooted for a while. Last time it took almost 30 minutes, during which time I had to open everything from the applications folder.

That's why I don't like to reboot. Especially for something like a mouse that should "just work."

You can do all your set up automatically.

1. Have the software you need launch on start-up
2. Set the programs to the right Spaces, so you don't have to do it

As for Spotlight if you like to use it, which it seems you do, then you should be glad that it reindexes!

If the mouse software replaced software that was in use at the time, which is very likely then there is no choice but to restart so that the old software can be released from use and the new brought in to use. Basic software update stuff.

I tried one out first in the Apple store and was a little disappointed with the tracking. I then tried a couple in two different stores and really liked both of them at the time. I guess it could have been the surface that made the difference, I just assumed it was something to do with the first 27" imac I used in the apple store (which was laggy even when mousing over the dock with magnification on).

Right click

Do you still have to lift your index finger in order to right click with your middle finger?

Downloaded and installed the new software update and theres absolute zero new special features... might be in 10.6.2

My local Apple store is on my way home from work, ive been pestering them every day for the past week to see if its in stock.

I was going to order online this weekend, but by the time its anywhere near being delivered, it must already be in stock.

come on scrolling ability!

lol, I stayed on the phone for almost 30 mins on hold, just to find out!

Are there any details on what the Magic Mouse update, actually updates?

Nop.

The Apple support page quotes 'special features' - however, there is nothing. Zilch. Nada.

I was baffled too.

lol How about the you're-a-sucker section (for buying this product)? That's kinda special. ;) I kid, of course. After the puck mouse and the mighty mouse, it just continues the Apple's legacy of making inferior product in one key area.

should have just updated the wireless keyboard with a nice multitouch trackpad. I'd have bought one then.

perfect for all the multitouch gestures, perfect for media centre/plex use on the sofa

I can't help thinking stuff like the two finger swipe is difficult on a mouse, as your index and middle fingers are outstretched - been trying to mimic it and it feels tricky and unnatural. Also crazy that they don't support two finger scroll or two finger click.

Its just a mighty mouse with the ball replaced with a touch pad for scrolling. Thats it. Still need to raise the index finger for right click (which I hate on the mighty mouse). Lacklustre update IMO

Maybe the multiclutch guys can get onto it?

They should have released a trackpad add-on instead of this half-arsed attempt at a multi-touch mouse.

I agree. I don’t see the big deal with this multi-touch mouse, to me it’s just a curved trackpad – except it doesn’t do everything a trackpad does.

Ours are on sale this Friday (Regent's Street)

Hope you talked to someone who actually can predict the future. I've asked and gotten "Friday (last week)", "Sometime next week (meaning this week)", and "Two weeks (from yesterday)". As usual, the employees are either left in the dark on purpose, have their heads in the sand, or are sick of answering questions about the availability. I at least got one friendly employee to say, "We receive shipments daily, so check back again tomorrow." I've noticed too, that the wait time on hold has increased significantly when calling. They could at least put information about availability on the message while waiting.

I have a wireless Mighty Mouse at work and i have to change the batteries every 2-3 weeks because they lose power. Any word if the Magic Mouse lasts any longer?

??? You are either using bad batteries or have a bad Mighty Mouse. Mine and others I know last 3 to 5 months. I use mine constantly.

That's funny they release the first software update before the hardware is available in stores. I undestand 27" iMac, though.
I have the feeling that in today's industry nobody can wait: why, simply, do not launch an item when ready, instead of pre-launch in weeks before, to figure out that it needs an upgrade, and so on?

Apple states 4 months with the Magic Mouse.

Hope so. My mighty mouse did last at maximum a month. With Duracell Extra batteries. Or with the most expensive one I could find, whatever they were.
I finally switched to rechargeable Sony, at least I recharge them each couple of weeks.
I think the problem is that it does not go to sleep if you don't use it in a while. It should have an option to sleep if not used.
I have BT Microsoft mouse and kb combo on a Dell PC: I changed mouse batteries 2 weeks ago after one year.
