The new Apple TV is the worst Apple product I have ever owned. It needs a hell of a lot more than a minor OS update.

Netflix issue with new update

I updated AT2 and now I get an error saying "There are 2 movies being watched, which is the limit for your membership. Please stop playing at least one movie and try again later." Now I know I've had at least 5 movies streaming on my account before, but after the update it stops the AT2 from playing content.

Release notes:
Apple TV Software Update 4.1.1 features
TV resolution fix: Addresses an issue that causes some high-definition TVs to incorrectly display at 480p.
Download fix: Addresses an issue that may cause a movie or TV show to be re-downloaded.

Thank you.

Always a good idea to reboot after an update. Netflix is probably confused about something in the cache between the before and after status of the update.

Still massive problems

Worthless update on my end. Some of my mp4's still load forever and never play, Netflix still has random issues, and sometimes my Apple TV randomly disconnects from my tv. I'm glad to hear people say this is the worst Apple product they have ever owned since I want to buy my first Mac soon. Apple TV is above average for a lifetime Windows user. I'm just happy when things eventually work or work 90%. Still better than Windows products. Not sure why anyone would want a Windows smartphone. Best of luck to them!

Hopefully fixes the lag issues I've been having on mine

Same here. Sometimes I loose sound or picture freezes for 30 to 45 seconds then it starts up again. Noticed it's only been on Netflix. I doubt it's my internet speed I have Optimum Boost, It's actually very fast on all my other connections.

No issues before or after the update. I have my Apple TV hooked up to a Samsung 42" Plasma and have had zero issues with iTunes content or Netflix. Streaming my content from a 21.5" iMac via wifi. I can hit the menu button when watching a movie and It always works. I did notice I had to place my Apple Tv right under my tv's stand so that way the ir remote works best.

PS: This is the newest Apple Tv

Did Netflix change?

I do not remember seeing "recently watched" on the first menu before... which is how I get back to the TV series I was previously watching....

Had this problem until I increased the multicast rate on my Airport Extreme. The Apple TV appears to be too eager to trade off bandwidth for signal.

Thanks for the tip -- I will try that with my Airport Extreme.

Hardly. I would have returned it if I didn't also need an airport express replacement (though even in that capacity its inferior to my old AE).

Given that the two are priced the same, you're basically getting all the video features thrown in for free then.

And also given that it's a completely new product (i.e., neither the old AppleTV nor the Airport Express) it's reasonable that you should assume some bumps along the way to it successfully replacing either. All first versions of products have issues and they are invariably ironed out within the span of a few software updates.

In short, hang in there for the updates.

I doubt Google resolving the DNS vs. some Cable company is going to cause/solve any problems with Netflix quality.

Especially since Netflix is known to use IP addresses (and not DNS) to stream it's content to set-top boxes.

Check it yourself. Your DNS server can be down, you'll be unable to get to any website typing in it's URL into your browser's address bar. But Netflix will still stream movies to your AppleTV.

Or so I've heard. ;)

damn. not surprised though - 3 major software revisions on gen 1 and an entirely new product and still not fixed. oh well.

Do remember that most people don't experience these issues. best place for specific issues you may experience is directly to apple with as much information as you can provide about what might be specific to your set up which causes the issue for you, but not for Apple when testing...

I love my Apple TV, it's more of a "it's got potential" purchase and I can't wait for more functionality to come on line, but it suffers with zero issues (well, once I worked out that the intermittent signal problem was being caused by a dodgy hdmi cable!)

Agreed. I own the first version of ATV, and now have the second version in another room. Except for one issue whereby it wouldn't show up on my TV again after going to sleep, which forced me to reboot it, it was worked flawlessly for me. I fixed that issue by changing the settings to never let it sleep. Not sure if that issue is an ATV issue, or my A/V receiver's not being able to nudge it awake.

Only real complaint about ATV Gen 2 is the user interface change vis a vis my iTunes content. I liked having my owned movies and tv shows appear under the Movies and TV Shows headings, respectively. The new interface in that regard (making me browse through Computer to get to it) seems klugey, and a step backward, honestly. More like my Roku or TIVO than an Apple product.
