I think it's interesting the the new 15" rMBP has an AMD chip. Looks to me like anybody expecting a Nvidia chip in the expected Retina iMac update later this year is going to be out of luck.

For the mean time Apple is in bed with AMD.

I'm actually impressed. For lacking Broadwell they still managed to make it a quality update.

The new iMac mostly just seems to be there to break the $2000 psychological price point.

AMD's 300 series is the most energy efficient mobile gpu set yet and we know Apple loves battery power...so yeah.

Very interesting bit for external monitors on the M370X model (from the product specs page):

Very cool.

It's not a real 5K screen. It has the width of a 5K but the height from a 4K screen. Making it 5K x 2K. It's probably just the max you'll see bieing pushed by a single DP1.2 cable. Also, never seen a screen at that resolution.

Doesn't really mean anything. They switch back and forth all the time.

Hmm... Since they updated the 15" without bumping the processor, and Broadwell is so late to arrive - it seems more likely that the next MBP processor upgrade might actually be Skylake.

Has Apple ever skipped one of the processor lines? Since these are still fourth gen maybe they will go right to Skylake with a redesign that matches that of the new MacBook. With of course more ports ;)

I have an early 2011 2.3 Itel Core i7 (Sandy Bridge). It works.

This is such a lowkey release I am guessing I wanna avoid until SKYLAKE appears? Maybe late this year if I am lucky?

So the 15" MBP now comes with more RAM standard than the top of the line Retina iMac haha. Oh boy

EDIT: Nvm. Apparently the mid-2014 also came with 16GB standard. Hmm

Bit of a disappointing update. My current laptop is the first gen 15" rMBP from mid-2012 and it still has a better CPU and the same amount of RAM and SSD space as the lower-end 15" released today.

It looks like they dropped the old 5k iMac by $200 too! It was $2499 when I looked yesterday.

$2000 for a desktop computer and:

1)it still comes with 8GB ram (2 4GB chips!!!)
2)a non-SSD drive. Oh, but for an extra $500 you can get a 512GB flash drive (not sure if it's SSD or PCIe or other) when you can pick them up anywhere for $180 at RETAIL prices.
3)Oh, but wait...there's more!....they don't even tell you what i5 chip you are getting.
4)And there's no i7 option for people that, you know, spend $2000 and actually want some killer performance to somewhat future proof their investment.

What the hell is an R9 M370X and is it worse than the 950/960M everyone was predicting?

EDIT: still Haswell?! Ok so this is a non-upgrade filler until Skylake later this year rather than next.

Could be a rebadged R9 with more/faster RAM ?

Interesting that they are still using Haswell for the Macbook Pro.

Furthermore pity they lowered the price of the current retina by 200 USD/200 EURO and are now offering a new base retina with non-fusion regular HDD for USD 1999/EUR 1999 (?).

Intel still must lots and lots of Haswell CPUs on-stock or Apple just bought enough stock to keep producing enough Macbook Pros and iMacs for the rest of this year.

Give this news my bets are still on Skylake refresh announcements in October/November, Skylake models in retail late 2015/early 2016.

Broadwell is indeed a "dud", but maybe Computex will proof otherwise.

Ordered a 15" MacBook Pro.

Quite honestly, if there is a processor update coming later in the year, I won't be too bummed. After all, I'm going to have this machine for so long that for most of it's life it won't be the newest.

I'm just glad I waited for the Force Touch trackpad.

I'm in the exact same boat. I'm planning to wait as long as this thing keeps running. Frustrating 'cause I'm more than ready for retina, but I can't justify the expense on a CPU that's likely to be 2 generations behind when they do their next refresh.
