Seems like a decent upgrade given that the next generation processors aren't ready. It does make me wonder whether Apple will skip Broadwell.

No HDMI 2.0, that's not really acceptable on a laptop refresh in the middle of 2015...

Intel is not releasing mobile versions of Skylake until early 2016.

So if you're waiting for a MBP with Skaylake, you're in for a long wait.

Apple will probably release a Broadwell version before that ( this year )

Did they? imac 27 - non retina - crippled and cant be upgraded.. cheaper retina one is a joke...

Base model 27 non retina iMac - obvious. They have 65W TDP CPUs, that will be only CPUs from Broadwell line. So that means, they made a room for for an upcoming update at WWDC.

Why cheaper Retina is a Joke? It only has HDD, and slightly slower CPU than higher speced model from that line. And its 300$ less.

I just don't get how they can not do ANYTHING for the 21" iMac after 20 months. I get that new broad well chips are not ready, but lower the price, or make fusion standard, or put in better dGPUs in the high end... Anything? It's insane to keep charging the same price as when these were brand new in sept. 2013.

and weaker gpu... and, do you really believe that apple makes silent bump today and introduces new/bumped imac in one month? not gonna happen

The hate is AMAZING.

I see that Retina iMac got cheaper for the same that it offered before. But people still focus on the base model that has been added to lineup that has a bit less than higher spec model, that got smaller price.

Second is the MBP. People moan about the fact that Apple not upgraded the CPU and Memory, because Intel did not brought new CPUs, but no, its ****ing Apple's fault. They brought faster and more efficient GPU from AMD. "OH NO, I LIKE NVIDIA MORE, WHAT HAVE YOU APPLE DONE?!!!!!".

They have given more for the same amount of money.

How the ***** can be that a bad thing?

AMD drivers are universally panned as being terrible compared to Nvidia, all I'm really getting over my late 2013 is a more powerful GPU and not the one I wanted, Maxwell is far more efficient than anything AMD has. Also when I'm throwing down £2k I have every single right to be a discerning customer.
May well have to avoid this refresh and wait for Skylake and maybe Pascal (stacked DRAM is worth it alone)!

This is alright! I got the top-end MBP back in March, so I'm glad it's not a huge boost! That said, it's a little sad to see the iMac so underpowered for that huge 5k display.

Really? Educate yourself or go away in shame. Ask developers they are being paid by Nvidia to lock games for "green" hardware. THAT is the reason why AMD is slower in games than Nvidia hardware.

Ill ask you this. Why Green500 does not honor Maxwell as the most efficient GPU architecture, and praises AMD GCN architecture for that?

I am tempted. I'm a whore for a new Macbook Pro. Mines a Late 2013 fully loaded. And it still runs great. So I might just hold out for the next one...

But you never know ;)

Question:

My wife and I are contemplating a retina iMac. We currently own mid 2010 MBPs (13inch and 15 inch, respectively). I am definitely not a tech guru, so I ask:

Is this retina iMac worth it or should we wait for the next refresh/update (whenever that may be)?

Totally agree, I've been waiting patiently since I got my Haswell rMBP on day one... Now they release this utter ************!!!

To say I'm pissed off is an understatement, I was happily ready to buy a new rMBP today, I'm not throwing down £2k for another lame Haswell chip and AMD's inefficient dunk and terrible driver support.

Thanks Apple, off to see what the competition has to offer, extremely bitter.

Why do you need to upgrade your Haswell rMBP right now? Other than more internal storage (!!) I don't see the need. You already have a beast.

No they DIDNT.

Its still in higher priced model, which was the factual "old" Retina iMac and it got CHEAPER.

If you need to spend more money on CPU and GPU why not buy the higher end model in the first place?

Because as of yesterday I didn't want or need to spend $400 more. It's the smart decision. Saving money by not throwing it away on a model with features I didn't need. i.e. 27" w/retina. Non-retina is fine for me for now. But now I'm forced to spend that extra $400 just to be able to upgrade. It's the taking away options that's really starting to irritate me.

These are the most powerful MacBook Pros yet. Force Touch is truly incredible and that alone makes it worth buying a new laptop and selling your old one.

I ordered already!

Glad I didn't rush in and buy that new 12" MacBook now.

good one, tim.

you're still paying same price as last year's systems with overclocked cpu's. only new feature being the new touchpad and the m370x gpu, which many people won't be buying.

I realize that a monitor isn't necessarily something that could be that much better than everyone else but that's all I need. I could actually use a bigger monitor when Im at home. I don't want to buy a monitor from someone else. I want an Apple branded monitor to match all of my other Apple stuff.

Well thanks

old magnetic spinning HDD, no flash (SSD)... slow and noisy
Spinning hard drive, vs. SSD/flash storage.
Now it just seems obvious doesn't it?

You must be the one lucky newborn that has never actually experienced the good  ol' spinning harddisks, but grew up with fast SSD... ;)

Well, not really. I'm saving up a SSD for my laptop. I just really never heard it before. Not being from a English speaking country and all.

But thanks guys (and galls). Other forums would have just teared me up a new one.

That's why MR has the best forum ever , except for the giveaway threads. People really seem to hate on free stuff here. :p

Make way for the keyboard jockeys! They are here to spout their vast knowledge of how things should be.

So you were expecting a lower priced iMac with better specs this soon after the first 5k version launched? That's funny. Talk about the most entitled generation in history.

This is alright! I got the top-end MBP back in March, so I'm glad it's not a huge boost! That said, it's a little sad to see the iMac so underpowered for that huge 5k display.

Do not underestimate the new graphics card. Especially nice is the fact that it features 2GB VRAM

Force Touch is truly incredible and that alone makes it worth buying a new laptop and selling your old one.

Can you elaborate? Why exactly do you think that this one thing- alone- makes it worth replacing an existing rMBP with a new one?

I'm glad you are seeing so much utility in that one feature that it moved you to update. But I'm genuinely interested in knowing how it alone adds enough value to justify me upgrading my rMBP.

What? Both AMD and Nvidia pay developers to focus on their hardware... BF4 and AMD Mantle spring to mind? I'm talking about how well AMD updates their drivers for any new game that comes out... It can be some wait! While with Nvidia it's usually always the day before the game launches or within a few days. That's why I see AMD drivers as junk, plus Maxwell is a far more efficient architecture than GCN platform and whatever island variant the 370M turns out to be. Why couldn't they have just included a 965M and everyone would have been more than happy?

Why do you need to upgrade your Haswell rMBP right now? Other than more internal storage (!!) I don't see the need. You already have a beast.

Thanks it's for a better dGPU, I was really hoping for a juicy Maxwell chip coupled with a more efficient Broadwell chip. Instead I get an unknown AMD chip and the same CPU, after waiting a year and a half to upgrade it feels like a kick in the teeth.

My guess is Apple held off updating the 15" as they were waiting for Broadwell, after Broadwell H got cancelled they went ahead without it. At least that's my guess.

Now it will probably be a Q1 2016 Skylake update in my opinion.

For those of us who use computers for work and not games, ask developers why they use CUDA instead of OpenCL.

You can never fully answer this question. When the next refresh/update arrives, the very same question will still be as applicable and waiting for the next version will be just as sensible.

Best answer: buy when you want/need one. And enjoy what you buy.
Next best answer: never buy by waiting for the next updates and use the money to enjoy life beyond cyberspace.
