As a woman this bothers me. Hire the best person for the job whether it's a man, woman, green person, purple person, alien whatever..
Where does it say they didn't hire the best person for the job? Speculation can easily turn this into something ugly. Also how does that 11K relate to the total number hired? There's really not enough there to make an informed opinion... informed. As an aside, it says more about you that you assume the women hired would/could be less qualified and just token hires... cuz woman.

Remember ..Steve Jobs was a college dropout. If you're going solely on qualifications one of the best CEO of our generation would NOT have made the cut anywhere.
True but he made it all himself, built the biggest and most life changing company in the world starting at his own garage.

And yet, so many people-- you included-- are projecting their own preconceptions onto simple statements of fact. What kind of foolishness is that, do you think? ;)
I have never let numbers cloud the obvious. I suggest you don't either. Everything I've said so far has been true, and I challenge you to prove otherwise.

As long as people have the freedom to choose, there is no problem.

But that is where the problem is. I currently work in management consulting. If you would extrapolate from that business, Earth would be populated by 75% white men, 25% white women. My company is getting better at diversity and by focusing on having more interviews than just the resume vetting process we, took on some brilliant people that would normally never have gone past the resume stage.

Whites and males are over-represented compared to the US population as a whole. So what makes you think the best person is not being hired because they are white or male? If anything, the numbers, taken at face value, suggest the opposite.

This is the usual nonsense that goes on when people talk about 'diversity'. Apple US is 52% white and 18% asian.
America is 64% white and 5% asian. Why do you mention that whites are over represented when they aren't and ignore the massive over representation of asians?

Is someone forcing someone to take a job they don't want? Sorry, I didn't see any indication that was going on in THIS article. Maybe you were confusing this with an article on the sex trade?

Always amazes me that people can read some entirely non-existent thing into an article. Almost as if they want it to say something it doesn't, perhaps to reinforce their own preconceptions.
Women today are encouraged to follow certain career paths, even if it goes against their wishes. That doesn't mean they listen to people who tell them these things, but it does happen.

San Francisco has a very large Asian community. It would be quite normal to have more Asians working at apple than there would be in the national average. In addition, Asians tend to do very well in IT oriented businesses. Like Dargoth just said, the high level numbers don't mean anything if you fail to have looked deeper.

I'd say.......Jolly good show ....Keep up the good work and all that....

Yet again, in the U.S only..... Apple can't see further than their eyes can they.

Good to see more "different" people in the industry anyway. :D

Fair enough. I myself have had that experience in the past, but am not lucky enough to be a part of any of the approved minorities. It is good that at least, on some level, people are starting to become aware of the weaknesses of the current hiring methodology.

Apple, pleeeease, be a tech company. I don't give damn about diversity. I don't care if my MacBook was designed by a black person, a yellow person, a white person, a red person, a transparent person or an oompa loompa. I want the best user experience and, seriously, Win 10 is a step forward. Focus on things that matter.

Bingo. Women tend to pick certain jobs, men tend to pick other jobs. Because of this, there will ALWAYS be an imbalance, and that's as it should be. As long as people have the freedom to choose, there is no problem.
Its not about choosing the IT field.

It is about being given opportunities for jobs after you have chosen the field. You might not have and issue with hiring woman, but for every person that doesn't there are 10 that have reasons for assuming women can't work in this field.

Plus, lots of people tend to hire people that 'look like them' and gender discrimination is a real thing. Lets not forget tha.

Oh, I'm not drawing any conclusions from the numbers. I'm just pointing out that you can't use the numbers in this article to prove there is bias against white males; because the numbers are inconsistent with that position, but consistent with the opposite. They don't prove there is bias against non-white males; but the argument that there is some kind of discrimination against white males at Apple seems to be belied by the limited evidence presented here.

But you make the assertion that something (not clear what) is obvious. Tell me, do you claim it is NOT obvious that there is discrimination against females and (especially) black people in the US workplace?

Good for you.
Now if you were responsible for 100% of all of the hiring for every company in America, theoretically... we'd have the best people in all job positions & live in Utopia.
But........ you aren't & we don't, so- welcome back to REALITY, where sexism and racism and classism exist, and (sadly) flawed diversity initiatives are MUCH, MUCH, MUCH better than nothing at all.

It's the quality of the people that matters. Not race or sex.

Unfortunately this can never be these days.

In the UK, we have areas that are predominantly black areas, and it was deemed helpful for the community if Black officers were found that could be used in those areas to ease past racial tension between black youth and almost 100% white officers.

So, it really comes down to how you define the BEST person?

Better at passing, "How good am I at a police officer tests" or How good am I at getting on and being able to communicate with those I am trying to police?

Why would anyone ever want a female fire officer?
It's physically demanding work, at any time called upon to lift heavy adults out of danger. Why compromise anything by having a female?

But we do.

I do not disagree in any way with the notion of "best person should get the job" the problem is when the best person 99% of the time tends to be the same type of person, and of course, how you define best.

Wow it looks like we really have a problem! And of course you can source that, right? Because I'm sure you're not at all sharing a prejudiced viewpoint (see what I did there?)

They should hire people like you, intelligent human before being a stupid SJW.

SJW have hijacks all minorities causes and discourses and are setting the detrimental seeds for a dangerous blowback when the liberal propaganda crumbles under the weight of it's own contradiction, manipulation and lies (I'm precise: I'm French, so I'm not a conservative either, and I'm afraid of what the liberal fascism has set for the coming conservative political trends...)
wow..that is alot of words which say absolutely nothing.

Liberal propaganda? what do french have to do with being liberal?...I don't know where to even start.

You might want to clarify the point you are trying to make here.
