This is the usual nonsense that goes on when people talk about 'diversity'. Apple US is 52% white and 18% asian.
America is 64% white and 5% asian. Why do you mention that whites are over represented when they aren't and ignore the massive over representation of asians?

Good point. What I should have said was that males and blacks are unrepresented. I took a short cut and that was sloppy.

black lives matter, thats so 2014..... black lives DONT matter..... ALL lives matter....who gives a flying FFF about skin color.

You forgot the /sarcasm (I hope)

But incase you didn't, the obvious comeback is that:

Cancer DOESN'T matter All diseaseS matter.

So we should protest all cancer research centers since they aren't covering a ALL diseases if we were to follow that logic.

what they fail to mention is that 99% of minority employees are schlepping iphones in a retail store for $10.50 an hour. I want to see the retail store/corporate numbers. Bet you won't see those anytime soon

San Francisco has a very large Asian community. It would be quite normal to have more Asians working at apple than there would be in the national average. In addition, Asians tend to do very well in IT oriented businesses. Like Dargoth just said, the high level numbers don't mean anything if you fail to have looked deeper.

Most Apple employees are in retail not technology.

The Bay area has about equal numbers of asians and hispanics. Apple tech (which obviously isn't just San Francisco) has 3 times as many asians as hispanics.

Women today are encouraged to follow certain career paths, even if it goes against their wishes. That doesn't mean they listen to people who tell them these things, but it does happen.

I certainly agree with those words, but I feel the encouragement they get is typically the opposite of what I infer you are implying (from your other posts). Every indication I've seen is that women are encouraged away from tech and science for most of their youths, up until the moment they are about to graduate high school. It's true there is some outreach at that point, but it's too late at that point to influence more than a few.

As it happens, standardized testing shows that women are as capable in math as men, or more so, on average. It's also been shown that tech and science careers have a much lower male and female wage gap than most others; so it's most unfortunate that women are apparently socialized at a young age from moving toward a career path that would ultimately serve their best interests.

i may get flamed for this but i never understood the american obsession with race and where people are from. like when i was studying abroad people kept asking me "whats my background?" and i didnt even get what they were talking about. "i am half this a quarter of that and a bit of this and that". i was like "i am german ... i guess?" (even though my dad is spanish but why point that out if i wasnt born there)

same thing when i had to sign some papers and it asked if i am caucasian or whatever (i didnt even know caucasian was a word before that)
Couldn't agree more. It's really weird to me how Americans seem to talk about races all the time. In Germany I'd even say the literal translation of the word "race" in connection to anything but dogs or other animals is considered offensive. Germany obviously has it's very own problems with xenophobia and racism, but I believe that the way Americans tackle the topic is not exactly the best one.
The comparison seems kind of off, but I remember as a child when I messed something up, all the grown ups around me would discuss what I did. They talked about me in the third person when I was right there in the room. I always felt like I shouldn't be there. Somehow, I think this is how these "diversity reports" feel like for those minorities. It's just awkward.

It's not so much "Americans" that are talking about races. It's the
Tired of people with personal issues attacking others just for their opinion. Hope you'll be banned.

I will quote you here from another thread:
Clowns who get offended by opinions different than theirs: Time to say Goodbye.

You'll be okay. Just hold your head up and work on the growing of a spine. The world can be brutal at times, and there will always be people that disagree with you. I know, it's rough. I hope your heart mends soon. All of our love, always and forever. Yours very truly, The World.

Wow people think diversity isn't important? You guys don't get it. I'm not surprised when reading front page comments actually.

theres nothing wrong with diversity but i dont agree with the approach. segregating people like that in the media ALL THE TIME isnt tackling the roots of the problem but instead it just makes people feel less valuable than others and "different".

How come Apple will provide stats on gender and ethnicity but not sexual orientation? Why should companies have to disclose one but not the other? And how come on the one hand liberals want to rid the world of gender/sex but on the other hand proudly disclose diversity stats that break out workforce by gender? What about people who don't identify as male or female? Are they not counted?

My god this is so stupid and the kind of PC nonsense Steve Jobs would never have engaged in.

The idea that white people are being widely discriminated against in America is absurd.

Why is a conscious corporate push to achieve diversity in the workforce - at every level and in every functional area a good thing?

Because the value, skills, and knowledge that a person brings to a job goes many, many time beyond what shows up on a resume. Apple is now a global corporation, selling products on every continent, and to every sort of person imaginable. It is also, in many respects a fashion company, and the way its product look, work, sound, and are sold has to meet the needs of an infinitely diverse group of customers.

Consciously pushing for a diverse workforce pays off in a myriad small ways. People from a broad background are far more likely to discover hidden markets - and hidden pitfalls in a product's design and marketing. People want to buy from salespeople who understand them and communicate with them. Apple is not hiring unqualified people. It is simply expanding its definition of job qualifications to include cultural awareness.

Why would anyone ever want a female fire officer?
It's physically demanding work, at any time called upon to lift heavy adults out of danger. Why compromise anything by having a female?
You don't always want the biggest and strongest fire fighter. Often, not always. There are times where small and high endurance counts. So you want a mixed team.
