It's also been shown that tech and science careers have a much lower male and female wage gap than most others;

What are the other carreers that have a larger wage gap? You mention that most gave a gap, I'm having a hard time to think of one where a man makes more money than a woman for doing the exact same job.

Yes and the problem has been that historically the best person WASN'T being hired for the job.

Do you get it now?
Like how the NYFD had to lower their standards so more women could be firefighters?
That's very hard to prove. And certainly isn't by merely stating hiring percentages. It's much more complex than that.
Should be very easy to prove. There must be billions of payslips issued that would show this imbalance. With 125M Americans with full time employment there should be over 3 billion payslips a year. Show me one where a man makes more than a women who have the same job at the same company.

You don't always want the biggest and strongest fire fighter. Often, not always. There are times where small and high endurance counts. So you want a mixed team.
If you want a firefighter that is small and has better endurance, you pick a male that is small and has better endurance. When it comes to physical activity, you just can't beat having more testosterone in one's blood.

Do a simple Google search. This has all been well proven and documented and how can you even suggest otherwise?

What has been well proven? I'm aware that Good Ol' Boys clubs exist but you can't prove or unprove their existence and prevalence with simple percentages. It's much more complex than that which this discussion is trying to illustrate.

Well, we're talking about hiring practices and you're talking about wage gap. So I think you may have jumped into the wrong discussion.

How come Apple will provide stats on gender and ethnicity but not sexual orientation? Why should companies have to disclose one but not the other? And how come on the one hand liberals want to rid the world of gender/sex but on the other hand proudly disclose diversity stats that break out workforce by gender? What about people who don't identify as male or female? Are they not counted?

My god this is so stupid and the kind of PC nonsense Steve Jobs would never have engaged in.

While I can understand the convenience of coming to "conclusions" based on wishful thinking ("Steve Jobs was so super politically incorrect!!!!"), I'll never understand why people don't use the internet these days before expressing those "conclusions".

(to be taken with a grain of salt, since the person is thanking his "god" for the opportunity to meet Steve Jobs... but whatever mythology rocks your boat.... just kidding - of course :D , the article is interesting nevertheless)

You lost me. Probably for the best since I think you're a little lost yourself.

You'll be okay. Just hold your head up and work on the growing of a spine. The world can be brutal at times, and there will always be people that disagree with you. I know, it's rough. I hope your heart mends soon. All of our love, always and forever. Yours very truly, The World.
"The world" is not brutal. It is made of people and it's all about people.
I don't get what you want to say with you sarcasm, so keep it for another situation.

Oh please. So you can point to one or two places where something might have been handled poorly in the struggle to bring hiring equality forward. That doesn't mean the effort is failure or not worth making.

Personally I'm not sure having a women in any job that involves physical danger is a good thing for the team as a whole, and that includes army on the front line.

I may be wrong, here, and this is just a personal viewpoint of what I could see happen, but I feel that the fact of a woman getting injured, captured or killed, when it comes to the media and how others (males) feel more protective towards females. That a female in jeopardy could possibly mean that others would take greater risks in saving them.

I would be interested to see if such tests have been done. Would other team members put their lives in greater risk to "Save the woman" ?
In an ideal world, no. Every team member would be regarded as equal, but I'm not sure this ideal would stand up to real world scenarios.
I could be wrong, it's just how I feel it would be in reality.

I seriously doubt any one has ever been discriminated based on race or sex at companies like Apple, Facebook, Google etc. those companies are what they are because they were progressive and innovative in a first place not because they were politically correct and it's ones best interest to have the best staff available working for you delivering the best results no matter what color, sex or religion they are. That's how successful business operate. I'm afraid this leads no where and will do us all harm, well except those few individuals who got their jobs not because of what they are capable of but because of their skin color, sex or religion.

By the way, US demographics are as follows:

Americans 308,745,538 100.0 %
Non-Hispanic White 196,817,552 63.7 %
Non-Hispanic Black or African American 37,685,848 12.2 %
Non-Hispanic Asian 14,465,124 4.7 %
Non-Hispanic American Indian or Alaska Native 2,247,098 0.7 %
Non-Hispanic Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander 481,576 0.2 %
Non-Hispanic some other race 604,265 0.2 %
Non-Hispanic two or more races 5,966,481 1.9 %
Hispanic or Latino 50,477,594 16.4 %

What can I say, whites are being discriminated against the most, based on numbers alone. And they should get rid of 3 in 4 Asians working for them no matter how good and well suited for those positions they are.

Ridiculous.

Agreed. Let's hire more women and other ethic groups no matter they are not up for the job. That's the American whining ways.

This is what happens when the CEO has no clue on what Apple used to stand for, he's just trying to compensate by sounding "cool" in a politically correct fashion and trying to be on the media for viral headlines.

And will it piss you off if I am of an ethnic minority and actually have the knowledge to fulfill the position, or will your whining continue?

For the record: I'm a 20-year sysadmin and systems engineer.. and I'm black.

BL.

Maybe we should just let women choose what they want to do with their lives? If they don't want to be in IT, let them do something else. Why does it matter to anyone else what they choose to do with their lives? Hell, if a woman wants to be a housewife, then I say, why not? Sorry if that last point is blasphemy...

you've written my thoughts down perfectly here mate. fully agree with everything you said
