Facetime sucks. Considering that fewer and fewer people actually use their phones to call, you can go figure how many use them for video-calls. And if I have to, I use Skype as that's what's on everyone else's phone.

FaceTime is ZERO configuration so it is dead simple for anybody to use... and it has the highest video quality as well. Skype takes about 10 steps to install & configure, which can be extremely frustrating. Not to mention that its interface is overwhelming & confusing for newbies. FaceTime is absolutely simple as can be... no configuration, no setup, nothing. Just make a call.

And let's not forget that the iPhone was the very first phone to offer native videochats, so Apple gets the credit for kickstarting the whole mobile videochat revolution with FaceTime. I don't even know if any phones had a front facing camera before Apple invented FaceTime.

Apple innovation, like always.

How long till Samsung copies this ad?

yay and the winner for the first mention of samsung is

i hate the iphone but love my ipad and facetime is great, i travel alot and facetime is so easy even my wife can use it, shes not the greatest when it comes to tech. hell she even uses the mac,

oh crap i'll have to get her one :(

Not sure if i spot sarcasm there.....

Why would it be sarcasm? The music in all of these is brilliant. It's emotional, which is exactly what Apple aims for with its devices: to affect people on a positive emotional level.

so you're saying WP8 is harder to use than an iPhone? :)

Ehh. WP8 is comparable I suppose, but yeah, I'd say iPhones are more straightforward. :)

I prefer the occasional dropped call over not being able to call anyone at all because literally nobody I know has an iPhone (or a Mac, for that matter).

Well yeah, I'll use Skype if I must-I do for people I know without Apple products, just like you-but if I have the chance to choose it'll be FaceTime every time. :)

I'd rather use Tango.. Oh.. Skype is better.. What for when you can use Google Hangout.. Please FaceTime is the way to go.. Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!!! Not everyone is on the same platform, not everyone is on Skype, not everyone is on Tango, not everyone is on whatever service as you are in. Use whatever works best and makes sense to you. Between iOS/OSX devices, Apple services may be better..if someone isn't on the same platform as you..use a cross-platform service..

FaceTime is great. Several people in our extended family use it a lot.

The "Photos" ad was the best so far. I think it has to do with the nature of the medium. FaceTime calls are very personal actions drawn out in time. Photography captures moments. We all share photos, we don't share FaceTime calls with lots of people. FaceTime calls are great for people participating in them, not so much for bystanders. The video was a good effort tackling a difficult subject.

very deceitful advert, you read it and its mind boggling, cant wait till these corrupted advertising techniques are outlawed one day

so whats new about facetme according to this advert, is it that old people can now be seen? wow, now more people young and old can be seen? weird

This ad isn't suggesting that FaceTime is new, but it *is* new to a lot of people. I had a girlfriend in Singapore and FaceTime provided a much better chatting experience than Skype, and a more reliable connection. Overall, the experience was much better, even down to simple things like rotating the phone. Skype gets "stuck" in the wrong orientation during the beginning of a call if you rotate, and you need to rotate again to fix it... highly annoying!

When I watch this ad, my only thought is... the future is here, finally. Video calls with anyone, in your pocket. Science fiction stuff becomes reality. Thanks Apple. Thanks Steve.

I like how only ads seem to get to the front page these days. All other Apple news seem to make Apple look pretty bad, so understandable.

mistake using phone

in the video at 33 seconds, a girl pans across a city to show her friend. but have a look she has her phone around the wrong way? why would you flip your phone around? mistake by ad directors? or the girl?

ps: Facetime sucks. Considering that fewer and fewer people actually use their phones to call, you can go figure how many use them for video-calls. And if I have to, I use Skype as that's what's on everyone else's phone.

You start out by saying that FaceTime sucks, suggesting that you don't use it. So if you don't use it, how do you know it sucks? Maybe you used it once on a bad connection, had a frustrating experience and from then on, you label the service as crappy. Would that be correct, kis? News to you... with a call, there's so many technical factors that come into play - two end network connections, plus the network betwen them - and if there's a problem anywhere in that setup, the connection might be poor. That's not FaceTime's fault. It's a far better protocol than Skype in terms of video quality. That's a fact.

You can flip the camera in FaceTime so it uses the other camera.

I think that's his point. She's facing the front of the phone away from her instead of using the rear camera.

I reckon that a lot of people actually do that, perhaps from being unaware that you can use the back camera.

I love facetime and my family love it too.
When it comes to hi-tech devices my mom and my aunties always have problems using them. To be honest my mom doesn't know how to use an ipad except making facetime call to me and my aunties. She is really happy to see them everyday since they live half a globe apart ;)

I have been using Facetime to call my girlfriend overseas for the past 5 months. The quality absolutely trumps Skype in every way. Even when the connection is a bit spotty over cellular, if we compared it to Skype with the same conditions, it would still be ahead.

Being able to use it seamlessly between phone, iPad and laptop is really easy too.

I never bothered with it up until this stretch of us being apart. But now I totally appreciate and applaud the feature. It really is a solid bit of software.

FaceTime

I travel quite a lot with work and every night at the hotel I FaceTime my wife to say hello to my daughter and the dog. She's 8 months old soon and both her and the dog thinks this is very funny and a nice feature (truth be told, the dog really don't get why I'm inside that screen)...

Have loved this from day one with iPhone 4

True, but I just find FaceTime easier to use, not to mention it's uncluttered interface.
The obvious downside of course being, that it only works with both parties in the iOS ecosystem.

FaceTime was supposed to have become an open industry standard, but that unfortunately never materialized.

They say it could still be in the works... As the article mentions, these kinds of things are sometimes protected by NDAs, which means we won't hear about it until it's ratified. It's a shame too because I was really hoping that FaceTime would become a standard before competitors made competing services, perhaps allowing the industry to adopt it. Alas, that boat has sailed.

And let's not forget that the iPhone was the very first phone to offer native videochats, so Apple gets the credit for kickstarting the whole mobile videochat revolution with FaceTime. I don't even know if any phones had a front facing camera before Apple invented FaceTime.

I was using an HTC Touch Pro in 2008 for video chats with its front facing camera, although it was only available over a data connection and very expensive.

FaceTime. Is that a new thing? What will Apple think of next?
Not an awful lot it seems.
Can't Innovate Anymore My ... That's It. Yeah. Can't Innovate Any More.

How true. Just last week I was talking to my Australian relatives on Skype.

"How's everything going?" I asked them.

"Everything's … glug … blig blog … glug glug", they replied. Then the call disconnected.

Seriously, if you think Skype holds a candle to FaceTime's quality/stability, you haven't been using it enough.

This is true - but I think it also has a lot to do with the state of the internet in Australia for many people outside of the capital cities! Ive had the same experience talking to Australian friends on both Skype and Facetime.

Immediately after watching this ad,I FaceTime my brother.
First Thing he told me that he was also about to FaceTime after reading MacRumour article, I don't know why but tears came down..... It feels great to connect even though we are 1000 miles apart...

I think , I should hate Apple and MR for emotionally manipulating me .... :D

haha - but my chosen smartphone brand / video chat program / car brand / favourite sports team is far superior to others! and i will fight to the death to defend its honor.
