Face time is kind of superfluous when you could just use skype.

Not everyone is going to download and install skype.

Anyone using an IOS device will have facetime, without them needing to do anything else. And on an iphone, facetime is integrated into calling app, so if someone calls you, you can easily facetime them back on a whim without needing to exit the app.

Simplicity is a very strong selling point for IOS, and basic services like facetime and imessage showcase this best, IMO.

This happened to me:
- Hi, this is your mom. :)
- Mom! YOU are video-chatting?
- Yeah, I wanted to try this out. I managed to install it all by myself! But I can't seem to get this Facetime-camera-thing to work, how do I do that?

We were on Skype.

Sounds like my folks. From what I've read, FaceTime is going to be a standalone app in the next ios update. It really is buried on the iphone.

Going from crazy dancing youth embracing ipod and think different commercials to this retirement home old people cry-me-river commercials.

Facetime is awesome thought.

:p I think facetime should be dedicated to apple devices only. Too many users will turn it into another "skype"

Couldn't agree more. I can definitely appreciate the closed garden approach, because so far it has proven to be extremely stable, reliable, and easy to use.

Lets keep it that way.

Who uses FaceTime? Other than blind Apple fanatics of course.

My mum uses it to FaceTime me without having phone me first...saves me a packet on phone calls. I'd have to support her more using Skype and doesn't Skype cost to call to a phone line?

Facetime uses hardware video compression. And since its Apple only app, it works seamlessly as it has full hardware / software support. Skype simply cant compete with quality.

Good to see Apple keeping the awareness going while they prepare new products.... exactly what they need to do. It's all about awareness and to remind iPhone customers why they love the iPhone.

Last night the MS Surface ad was on probably 10 times on the show I was watching... it was the one where it makes fun of Siri... A good try, but it shows the difference in where companies are at in their efforts... MS is trying to convince people they have a product whereas Apple is showing why you love your iPhone.

I find it kind of amusing that people keep pointing out other services kind of duplicate Facetime's features but nobody on "Photos Every Day" was whining about the fact that other phones can take pictures.

Facetime is successful because Facetime is simple. I NEVER use Skype but I use Facetime quite often. Skype almost always winds up being a garbled, messy chat that is hard to follow, or it simply doesn't work. My mother Facetimes with me because it's brain-dead easy to figure out, but the Skype user interface is confusing even for me, and I'm 19 and pretty damn tech savvy.

I do skype call often and tried facetime also quite few times.

facetime never fails, it just simply works without you going under the hood.

with skype, you have..have to, go under the hood to fix and make it work. it doesnt work straightaway.

True !

Unimpressive. I'd rather use Tango and speak to people across iOS and Android platforms.

grandma, just download tango... it's an app. yes, you download it on your phone... yes, your iPhone. From the App Store... The blue button that looks like an 'A'...

10 min. later

Yes, click the install button. What? No, I don't know your password... Who set up your phone? no no, your iPhone...

another 10 min. later

Screw it, i'll call you on facetime.

Got teary
remembered it's not cross platform
back to using Skype.

If that's not a stupid reason, I don't know what is.

FaceTime works. FaceTime is probably on more phones than Skype, because Skype has to be intentionally downloaded, but FaceTime is just there for iOS devices.

If I want to make a call and a friend has an iOS device - no brainer, it will work. If my friend has an Android device, different story. Most of my friends don't have Skype or any other video calling software installed, thus I can't video call them. FaceTime wins.

So here's a question, are you using facetime because it has the video piece or because it doesn't cost anything? ie if facetime were audio-only, would you use it instead of a phone call?

I've never understood the video call thing, I don't need to see someone when I'm talking to them, I actually don't really want to, I find phone calls intrusive enough and at least if you have the phone jammed against your ear and the mic near your mouth, it's a bit more private (for those of us not constantly carrying earphones). Video calling always seemed like a great idea few people wanted.

But if people are using facetime not because they really want the video, but because it's a cheaper way to call, I understand the appeal more now and look forward to the day facetime has an audio-only option (soon right!!!).

Well stated.

I travel a lot and actually use FaceTime all the time on hotel and airport wifi. With headset.

Also used it many times for troubleshooting across distances. I would say the video quality is superior to Skype.

Nice ad, but...

At six seconds into the video, when the little boy says "Hi, Grandpa," look at the screen on the phone. You can see the grandparents, and then in the tiny secondary view of the person making the call, you can see ... a grown man! :D

I find FaceTime more stable than Skype or tango. I do all my one on one conference calls on face time(beats pill), everything else on goto meeting. I FaceTime my daughters that live 1500 miles away, it just works very well no app to go into.
