This happened to me:
- Hi, this is your mom. :)
- Mom! YOU are video-chatting?
- Yeah, I wanted to try this out. I managed to install it all by myself! But I can't seem to get this Facetime-camera-thing to work, how do I do that?

We were on Skype.

I'll be honest and this is my opinion... But this is borderline sexist, "sex-sells" territory. Why are 80% of the people in this commercial attractive young women? (And all similar apple commercials recently.)

Also, what seems like the only guy in the ad is "afraid" of kissing his SO over Facetime? Because men should naturally be afraid of displaying any emotion, and when he does, awww how cute. /s

C'mon Apple, you're better than this.

Oh come on, this is just nonsense.

FaceTime is so super simple to use, and it acts just like a phone call-makes it so much easy for my parents back home to be able to video chat.
And works with iPad,iPhone and even Mac :D

No need to remember user ids and passwords separately for Skype or log-in, worry about setting up and filling a new profile etc. Love FT !

This is also what I appreciate about FaceTime. FT!!!

Face time is kind of superfluous when you could just use skype.

Can't give you any exact numbers but from my experience Facetime has much higher quality and consistent video.

I remember when my girlfriend and I were Skyping with her parents and everything was a bit pix-elated and the video kept cutting out. Remembering that they were calling from a macbook air and we quickly switched over to facetime. We were amazed with the sudden step up in quality. To give you an idea, we were able to even see every little dot of stubble on her father's five O'clock shadow.

those ads are kinda embarrassing and trying way too hard imo.

its not like apple found a cure for cancer or stopped world hunger.

at the end of the day its just a device ...

I love the positivity in Apple ads these days. When others (Samsung, Nokia, Microsoft) concentrate on Apple-bashing, Apple stays positive and focuses on their own strengths. :apple:

Happiness can prevent cancer. And hunger. :)

FaceTime is ZERO configuration so it is dead simple for anybody to use... and it has the highest video quality as well. Skype takes about 10 steps to install & configure, which can be extremely frustrating. Not to mention that its interface is overwhelming & confusing for newbies. FaceTime is absolutely simple as can be... no configuration, no setup, nothing. Just make a call.

And let's not forget that the iPhone was the very first phone to offer native videochats, so Apple gets the credit for kickstarting the whole mobile videochat revolution with FaceTime. I don't even know if any phones had a front facing camera before Apple invented FaceTime.

Apple innovation, like always.

I had video calling on my Nokia in 2003 over 3G. The US isn't the world, you know.

On another note; whatever happened to FaceTime becoming an open standard? That would really kick start things in the right direction. As someone said, it's zero fuss to set up.

1. iPhone was the vest first phone with videochats? You do know that phones had videochat looong before iphone even came out, around 2002/2003 and they removed it - why? Because nobody uses that crap.

2. Kickstarting mobile videochat revolution? Where exactly? In all the years iphone had facetime i havent seen not one single person using it.

3. No phone had front facing camera before iphone? 2004

i really do hope your post was just sarcastic

We need products, not ads

Hey Apple, how about getting off your a** and release new products instead of new ads?

This is so true! No earlier than two days ago I was out for a walk and my sister called me half across the globe via FaceTime asking me how to install drivers for her new printer. She then pointed the camera to the screen so I could see what she was doing and I then told her what to do next. Not to mention that even though we both were on 3G call quality was acceptable for me to read from her laptop's screen and for us to communicate in voice without any problems.

The matter is, I don't keep Skype always on on my iPhone due to battery life concerns and due to the fact that I don't use it that often to justify the act. Even though I've been using it for many years, the process of opening it and initiating a call looks more cumbersome than it is with FaceTime.

Looking forward to using the voice-only version.

The sad thing is that when FaceTime was introduced, Steve Jobs promised this would be an open platform that anyone would be able to use. I was expecting Android/Windows Phone/Windows applications that would be able to communicate via FaceTime as well. Basically, a Skype killer.

However, Apple changed its mind and chose the "Closed Garden" approach which is simply a bad thing for users.

The beauty of Facetime is the nature of signing people up to the service and their contact being linked to their phone number.

Yes skype could be technically better, tango works cross platform, yada yada.... the problem is my skype account has 3 contacts. I can facetime closer to 50% of my contacts.

If I want to speak to someone I don't want to have to phone first and talk them through installing an app and signing up to another service.

I don't get all the hate.

It's a cute advert that is presented in a simple style that matches the simple feature in iOS and puts it in simple situations where you might want to be able to see the person you're talking to at a distance.

What the ad appeals to is a lifestyle. It doesn't claim Apple is the first at what it does here... but it does give the impression that it's an easily accessible feature, which it is. You just pick a name from your phone's contact list and choose to start a FaceTime call instead of a voice one. That's it. No setup, no third party accounts. All the phone needs to know is that the other end's phone is an iPhone. Simples.

My Dad, who's in his 90s, can cope with that.

Meanwhile, does anyone know if the piano music is available to buy yet?

Apple Shouldn't just stop at FaceTime. The new iPhone has a camera and music player. And Apps and that. (Quick, think of something else it does) and makes phone calls too and... (Hurry... They're starting to realise we've run out of new ideas) and it takes lovely pictures and its like an iPad but smaller. Tho not that smaller compared to an iPad Mini and ..... Is that enough?
"Yeah. That's should distract them long enough to realise Apple ain't making it past 2014- right guys- get packing....we've a plane to catch"
