As noted earlier in the thread, if you plug directly into a Mac that should invoke it immediately. For me it was a reboot, as I was only plugged into a charger, though the notes show they only need to be paired via BT for the update.
I plug it directly to one of the front facing usb ports on my Studio to charge it every time.

I tried turning the keyboard/trackpad off and back on and plugging them in a USB port in the back. I have no idea what triggered the update, but it looks like they're updated now.

I'll happily wait right here while you find me the quote in the article that says lightning. There is only reference to USB-C.
I'm not sure if you're serious but just in case you are, here's the quote:
"Apple today released updated firmware for several accessories, including the 140W USB-C Power Adapter, the Magic Trackpad 2, the Magic Trackpad USB-C, the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID, and the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad."
At least 1 item on this list is 100% lightning and the other 2 can be also lightning or usb-c but that's not clearly specified, so both could be assumed.

When I plug in a cable for my Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad, the displayed version immediately jumps to 4.1.0. When I unplug the cable, the version changes back to 3.1.4. Could the keyboard have multiple firmwares, for each connection type, ie, bluetooth vs. usb-c cable?
Have the same but different versions. I have the Lightning version with Touch ID. The Bluetooth version number is 2.0.6. When I plug it into my Mac, the version is 4.2.0.

Update;
Android devices are still capped at 15W on the 140W charger on the new firmware.
:(

I expected it but it's still a disappointment.
