I sent my Airpods Pro 2 USBC back today because out of the box the noise cancellation was AMAZING compared to my original Pro but just over a week later something changed (maybe a firmware update not sure) and it was nowhere near as good

Maybe just got a duff pair but I thought since I was in the 14 day window I'll just take my money back for now and I can always try again in a couple of months
You can always get this again from Amazon for $189 and have at least a 30 day return window, unlike Apple’s 14 day.

Updating my two sets were easy. I just stuck them on a wireless charger and 15 minutes later, both were updated.

Mine updated this evening without issue. No idea what’s new, but I haven’t noticed any difference in audio quality thus far.

Unfortunately, Amazon's regular 30 days doesn't apply on AAPL sold products via the "official" channel (I checked), it is 15 days :(.

Latest firmware versions

  • AirPods Pro (2nd generation) with MagSafe Charging Case (USB-C): 6A303
  • AirPods Pro (2nd generation) with MagSafe Charging Case (Lightning): 6A303
  • AirPods Pro (1st generation): 6A300
  • AirPods (2nd and 3rd generation): 6A300
  • AirPods Max: 6A300
  • AirPods (1st generation): 6.8.8
Nor correct.

I have the pro 2nd gen with usb-c and run 6A300

I think this was done to reduce the nausea some people experienced. It's unfortunate for those of us who weren't impacted, the ANC was much better in the launch firmware for sure. The AirPods Pro 2 ANC is very good and the adaptive mode is sublime on many levels, they are worth the upgrade.
Did people experience nausea?

I had the original APP on launch and the noise cancelling was excellent for me also at first, but after firmware updates it was not even close, like a fraction of its previous effectiveness.

However, the 'pressure' I felt sometimes was also reduced. So people had nausea from this pressure? It'd be a very un-Apple thing to do, but if they gave us a slider to control the amount of NC (like other brands do) then everyone could be happy. Hide it away so the default user never sees it, let those who want more noise cancelling push it up in Advanced Settings.

I had to disable all this 'smart' adaptive features, I kept having conflicts and strange issues with audio on phone calls, Zoom, Teams etc. I'll maybe flick them back on someday.

I think this is the only time that I haven't had to actually have them plugged in to update. Updated in my pocket surprsingly.

Is there any way to force the case to update firmware? Airpods updated to 6A303 yesterday, but case is still on 51.11.1

I cannot see a way to force a firmware update to the case itself.

I'd bet 99.9% that yes this was the reason. Many people experience nausea from the traditional older methods that cause that pressure feeling.

Conspiracy theorists would tell you Apple hindered their own product to upsell you on a future one, but I would bet a lot of money that they received enough returns / customer sat. numbers back quickly that put them over a threshold of "we need to adjust this" and so they did so quickly before a lot of people had them to notice.

AirPods Pro 2 have a different design and don't cause this phenomenon much if at all.

Still on 6A300, which is not even the 6A301 release from September. So clearly we need a tool to manually push these updates because if Apple's proposed automatic/background updating worked, I wouldn't be on 6A300 still (which is from Idk when)
Same for me. I was kinda surprised it was that old considering.

My Lightning set updated, but the USB-C ones haven't. I don't really notice anything new.

EDIT: The USB-C set updated now. I still don't notice anything new. Probably because I don't use any of the newer features like Personalized Volume or Conversation Awareness.

Looks like mine is updated:.

At least for me, the weirdest thing is that my APP2 updates itself without me even trying.
Too bad there's no way to either: 1) manually update or 2) prevent the update from happening.

Let's hope Apple doesn't nerf the APP2's ANC with future updates like it did with the original APP, which worked in the beginning but was affected after the updates.
It was reported here in MR and other online forums and in the general media.

My USBC AirPods Pro 2 still on 300. No idea how to get them to update. Tried unpairing and repairing. 🤷‍♂️

What I had to do was keep them plugged in (wireless charging or by cable; doesn't matter), leave the airpods in their case, open the case, and leave it next to your phone. It will update itself in its own time. But the case needs to be open for the phone to see the firmware version on the case and the airpods.

Thanks for the tip. Does the phone have to be on wifi?

I hope it addresses (unless it’s some type of user error on my part) my AirPods Pro 2 both the lightning and the USB ones that I’ve used continuously disconnect and don’t show a location and Find My. I get that error message that they were not finished setting up and they don’t show a location. Then if I open them and connect them, they start to reappear back in Find My and then disappear again after a few days.

I haven’t had that issue but hope it fixes it for you

They're not updating in their own time unless that time is glacial time.

I put them in the case, plugged in the case (case charges), opened the case lid, paired them to iPhone and they showed model #A2698, firmware 6A301. They stayed that way next to the phone in the case with the lid open for hours yesterday - no change. Re-did the same steps this morning and here it is lunch with zero change. Tried closing the case as well.

Whatever the secret sequence is to forcing an update, it's not working for me.

*UPDATE*
Suspecting that my iPhone11 OS 16.6.1 was the problem, I unpaired from the iPhone, did the same process with my MacBook Pro M2max OS Sonoma 14.1 and it nearly instantly changed to 6A303. I unpaired, paired with the iPhone and now they're also showing 6A303.
In my case with the iPhone described above they were either not updating or not registering/displaying the update until I paired them with the M2max running Sonoma.

With 6A303 they bring the sound character changes via DSP value changes now also the USB-C version. The sound is darker now. For my taste a bit too dark but maybe they‘ll correct this in the next update. 😅
