I, for one, am pretty dissapointed with the updates. Thew new iBooks are definitely an improvement, especially with the price drop, but I've been holding out on buying one all summer out of speculation, and hope, for a widescreen model or one with better resolution. I'm still on my first iBook, 700mhz G3 and it's a great computer but by far the biggest problem is the screen in my opinion. The screen feels so much more cramped than anything else and I use any program I can that minimizes it's occupancy on the screen and it still isn't enough room. Feel like I've waited this long, might as well give it another couple months.

Is anyone else surprised that these updates didn't come with a price drop for the powerbooks? Now that Apple has closed that gap even more, and priced the iBooks even cheaper I see less incentive than I did yesterday to choose the powerbook over the iBook given the stark differences in price, and lack thereof in performance. Don't get me wrong, the Powerbooks are clearly superior, but for an $700 difference? ..... for the 15" 1.67 without the superdrive that I was considering....

That and I gotta know.... do those of you with the SuperDrive get use out of it? I dunno, I don't design my own movies or anything so I can't really imagine getting much use out of it unless I'm missing something here

If you think the pricetag is the only difference between an iBook and PowerBook - you're an idiot!

ibook is to iMac, as PowerMac is to PowerBook.

Yawn.....

I'm gonna buy the Dell Ispiron 9300 (17") for the same price as the 14" iBook. It beats it hands-down.

Apple has really crippled the iBooks in order to try to not hurt the Powerbooks.

Dell, here I come.

If you don't mind Windows and having no iLife then I'm sure it's an excellent deal! Nothing wrong with that, Macs aren't for everyone after all. :)

I think this is a solid update. Processor bump, 512 MB RAM on-board, larger HDs, better video card, BT... A good update to tide us over until the Intel iBooks are out. :)

I just think that they should have given the 12" a built-to-order superdrive option. Oh well. Pretty solid update at least. A bit disappointed with the 32mb of video ram but perhaps next update, after the Powerbooks have been updated.

Something Bluetooth this way comes?

What's with Bluetooth being standard on all portables now? That makes me think there's something big brewing with Apple and Bluetooth.

Home theater remote tablet, anyone?

superdrive isn't a necessity. if you really need the dvd burner, get hte lacie external dvd burner which is faster, and i believe it burns text onto the disc, is the same price. think of it that without the dvd burner you'll have less weight with the ibook, you've still got cd-rs to help. increase the hdd to 60 gigs for a sweet spot between price and size or go with the 80 gig hdd that way you won't 'need' the dvd burner when youc an store it all on a disc.

my only gripe is that the ibook is not 13.3 widescreen with new lcd screens, and there is no DVI, and has only 32 megs of VRAM.

p.s.

if i used screen-spanning hack, can i increase the resolution to the dell 2005fpw's native resolution? or will it stick at 1024 x 768?

what the #$&#$&#$&
1024 x 768?! 32MB Graphic RAM?!

I was planning to buy immediately for a widescreen one to replace my dead 500MHz G3 iBook.....

The mostly shocked release since I heard about intel inside....

Speaking of idiots, :) something is fundamentally wrong with your analogy. Now i haven't had english class since the end of May, but I'm pretty sure you are comparing the consumer portable to the power desk-top, and the consumer desktop to the power portable. It should have read:

ibook is to iMac, as POWERBOOK is to POWERMAC
or
ibook is to POWERBOOK as iMac is to POWERMAC.

MY $.O2 ;)

So how about that PowerBook?

Now that the mac mini and ibook updates are out of the way, how about that PowerBook?

I say the odds are real real good that we will see an update at Mac Expo Paris in Sept.

All I want in the PB is a modest upgrade of CPU, system bus, GPU, display, and battery life.

I think all are possible in Paris

say
Freescale 7448 running at 2 ghz high-end,
Nvidia go6800 ultra
improved FSB to 533 (maybe not possible yet)
slightly improved display brightness, color saturation, and resolution (similar to Sony XBrite)
and improved battery life.

I think that would be enough to tide me over for 2.5 to 3 years until I am ready to switch to intel (hopefully 64 bit dual core laptop by that time frame) :)

Amazon iBooks

So when do you think Amazon will have these new iBooks and will they be offering a $100 rebate like they have been offering with the old ones??

Bought a 12" one month ago and ... the updates are minor. Would have liked a 40gb HD, as I only have about 13gb of space left removing all of iLife except iPhoto & iTunes, AppleWorks, and a few other items.

But does this support Pixel Shader 3.0?

Does the ATI Radeon X850 XT support PS 3.0? No. ATI does not have a current Video card that is PS 3.0 compatibible. The R520 when that comes out should have PS 3.0. Right now they just have PS 2.0b.

The ATI Radeon 9550 is a better card then what is in the 12" Powerbook.

Also it does support core image. Apple site on Core image is just not updated.

What a waste of time, just updated and the iBooks are already 6 months out of date. Sorry apple but this is the last stand I waited 18 months and your offering in the area of portables is full of ****. My 1500 is going to Dell or IBM.

- Another customer apple lost. (Only in laptops, I love the ipod.)

How are you so sure? Can you post a link or something? I know a lot of people are wondering cause noone has heard anything concret. Thanks for your help!

2. Insert Foot.

Watch what you type before you call someone an idiot ;)

http://www.ati.com/products/radeon9550/index.html

The Radeon® 9550 provides full support for Microsoft® DirectX® 9.0 allowing you to immerse yourself in real-time cinematic game play for today’s and tomorrow’s game titles

http://www.ati.com/products/radeon9550/specs.html

Support for Microsoft® DirectX® 9.0 programmable vertex and pixel shaders in hardware

Thus since it is full DX 9.0 compatitible, then it should support core image.

Everyone seems quite angry at this update, but I think the rumors got you a little too excited about things that could have been. From now on maybe you should be a little more skeptical over rumors and not think that they are always true. At least it's an update people! Would they really change the whole enclosure before the intel migration anyway? I guess it is possible they could have, but seems like it would be better marketing to go along with an intel chip inside. They people this update benefits are the people that needed an ibook now, and just wanted something newer than the older one (though the older one is still good IMHO). My one complaint is that they didn't even add the Superdrive as a BTO option on the 12", forcing people to get the 14" if they want that option or getting an external drive.

From a happy 1.2Ghz 12" iBook owner

Why are people so quick to bash Apple for this revision, I think it's great news. I just bought my 12" iBook back on July 7th for $1411 CAD (60GB HD and Bluetooth upgrade) plus $99CAD for a Kingston 512MB stick. and I thought it was an excellent value for my needs, I don't regret it one bit.

Now, they've upped the RAM to 512, hard drive to 40GB, Bluetooth is standard, CPU is up to 1.33Ghz, the new ATI 9550 is around 20-30% faster than the 9200 despite still being 32MB, scrollpad, sudden motion sensor, tell me that's not a great value over the previous model that was also a great value..... and NO PRICE INCREASE. In fact an iBook of my same configuration dropped from $1411 to $1305 for the 60GB HD and Bluetooth alone, save the other great upgrades. Geeks are too hard to please, I swear, but for us regular people, this is great, and I'm happy for the people who'll be getting the new rev of iBooks.

In some ways I wished I would have waited a couple weeks to buy, but then again the update is hardly significant. It is a 133MHz CPU bump and a graphics card bump, both of which I doubt make a whole lot of difference in everyday stuff. I would have saved around $90 for a comparable configuration had I waited but I knew when I bought this thing that a new one was coming up soon, but I'm impatient. Looking at the specs, it wasn't really worth holding out for.

Does this graphics card work with Core Image? Does anyone know?

No.

But since the Core Image system is designed to scale it will use the CPU to help it along if the GPU isn't enough I believe.

New ibooks? should have been a silent update....

Apple should have made the 12 inch ibook at 1.42Ghz across the board. Also I don't understand why they still want to hobble the FSB to 133Mhz and a funky 142Mhz (why even bother for a 9Mhz increase!!!). Also why screw the 12inch ibook users out of a measly 87Mhz!! Come on both emac and mac mini are running at 1.42Ghz with the 167Mhz FSB.

I was really hoping for one last hurrah for the PowerPC G4 and was hoping that Apple would deliver. As far as dumbing down the ibook (to differentiate from Powerbook) Apple could have always chosen to update the PowerBook Shortly after. The technology exists for Apple to make a 1.8Ghz or faster G4 PowerBook with 1MB of L2 cache on a 200Mhz FSB.

http://www.freescale.com/webapp/sps/site/prod_summary.jsp?code=MPC7448#

If the ibook lineup inculded 1.42Ghz across the board with 167Mhz FSB then I don't think people would be as dissapointed. Considering how weak this ibook update was I think it is even less likely that we will see Apple drop the 7448 in the PowerBook.
