All the hoopla over the last few weeks for a very minor upgrade. Don't get me wrong though, I think that the iBook is still a great deal, but I was hoping for more.

Either way, my PowerBook will hold me over until the Yonah PowerBooks come out Q1 2006

Well, I just think it is great and I am not going to whine about it.

I still have my iBook G4 12" 800 MHz, so this all looks like a big deal to me.

I love my computer and the only thing I would want is for it to just be a little faster so this computer is perfect for me. And I do a lot things on my iBook that would suggest that I would need PowerBook and I never had any serious problems (Dreamweaver, Adobe Photoshop, etc.).

Eventually, I would love to have an iMac G5 at home so I really don't need an all powerful laptop for school (unlike my husband who wants only one computer and thus went with the PowerBook). Still, my little iBook has lasted me quite well without the iMac.

Here is an idea: if you don't like it, DON'T buy it. Not every computer has to built JUST FOR YOU. Get a powerbook and stop fussing.

What a load of pants!

This definitely wasn't worth waiting for. - What happened to wide-screen displays and dual core processors?. - This is pants! - As for the Mac Mini upgrade, all I can tell is they give you a bit more RAM, - which should have been the standard configuration in the first place.

I can only think the reason is so we are 'wowed' when the Intel versions come out.

I told my sister to wait until she bought one, as they were due to be upgraded. - I think I'll have to tell her to hold fire, until they provide a decent update.

New Mac Minis Too! http://www.apple.com/macmini/specs.html
Glad to see the iBooks got a boost!
So there is now a superdrive mini (which you could already order before btw). And all models have 512mb ram, but I believe that was already added someway midterm as a minor change. So what's new?

Judging on the CPU speed of the new iBook of 1.42Ghz I deduce that the FSB is now 166mhz. Yes! (not being sinical, in case you are in doubt)

Maybe if we are lucky, they will update Powerbooks to have its 512 of ram in one slot like the iBook, because what a pain in the ass to upgrade.

Still, 4200 RPM hardrives too. Forget this, I love the iBook and all, but I'm going for the powerbook. If this was apples strategy I guessed it work. The iBook's specs aren't high enough now i have to spend an extra $300.

I bought my powerbook about 2 weeks ago and it already had 512mb in one slot. Ordered a 1gb stick, and i now have 1.5gb.... Your dreams are answered!

The RAM on the powerbooks aren't that hard to upgrade, it's only 3 screws to remove the memory cover.

The one RAM in one slot on the iBook is almost impossible to upgrade as it is soldered directly on the motherboard.
OverAchiever,

Unless Apple's changed something with this update, the iBook and 12" PB have some memory soldered onto the board IN ADDITION to a regular slot that the user can replace.

The 15 and 17 PB's have 2 user replaceable slots for RAM.

Bummer, I was hoping for widescreen.

Oh well. I guess a widescreen iBook wouldn't have left much incentive for one to buy a Powerbook.

Since this update is pretty minor, maybe there are some big updates coming soon for the whole laptop line.

well screw that.
I'm getting a Sony.

They weren't able to get the stuff they needed done in time, so they just pushed this out.
I predict that there will be a short time to the next update, with a new form factor.

so now, my 1.33GHz Powerbook only has a better graphics card... and was about $500 more. But it was still worth it at the time. I also like the keyboard much better.

Doesnt the 1.33 powerbook not have a faster system bus?

I do not think there is an ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9550 on ATI's website.

I also wonder if this falls into "great PPC products in the pipeline"

Terrible update...The Mac Mini's speed didn't even change...it only gained an extra 256MB of ram and wireless capabilities...LAME

The iBooks, while less shameful are nothing spectacular. What's this mean for Apple? Relatively acceptable iBook sales until the redesigned Intels come out, which i believe will be the second Intel Mac release preceded by the Powerbooks.

It's like legos when it comes to form.

iBook = duplo

PowerBook = lego technic

No matter how close the iBooks come to any current model PowerBook, the iBook is more simple and with that comes some cheaper feeling features.

No doubt this is a sign of things to come for Apple, ie, crappy updates until they migrate totally to Inhell chips. Almost a year and this is all they offer for ibooks and the mini? Can you say more lost market share, Apple?

Hmm, somewhat dissapointing. The iBook really needs a higher res screen and an even better graphics card I think. 1024 x 768 is just to cramped for OSX and 32mb of VRAM is just mean these days.

Maybe we have to wait for Intel before we see real improvements in spec.

The PB's have been like that for a while.

What a boring update though - nothing very exciting at all... very minor

new ibooks have 1.5GB capacity....suggesting 512 is soldered on leaving the slot free

pbook isn't like this

They could have at least increased the resolution for the 14" iBook, even if it was never going to be widescreen. I own the current (before today) 14" iBook, and the lame resolution is the only thing that really bothers me. 1024x768 is way too poor for 14" these days.

Also, does anyone know if the ATI Mobility Radeon 9550 supports CoreImage? At least that'd be something.

Regards

1024x768 is fine...as long as you use expose

I can't imagine they're going to update it again anytime soon. If she needs one now, let her get one now. There will always be something worth waiting for in 6 months.
