It takes 15 minutes to fill 1GB? Man...there's surely a major speed issue with the Shuffle in that case?

Yes, USB 2.0 is around 20% slower (IIRC) than FW400 in real terms when transferring large amounts of data, but 15 minutes per GB...that's just not normal. My 20GB 4G used to fill up at a similar rate using USB 2.0 or Firewire - and it certainly didn't take 5 hours!

That's a flash issue, not USB - flash is slower to write to than a hard drive as on the iPod.

I can't really tell you but that is about the time it takes. Now with the Shuffle I don't really care but with an iPod mini of 6GB this would annoy me. I haven't had the chance to test USB 2.0 on an iPod mini but I thought it'd be the same as my Shuffle's.

I am going to buy Sony PSP...It can do more than an ipod...just not battery life..and cheaper price...

iPod mini 4GB: $199
PSP with 32MB Duo included: $250

Where is the comparison? One is designed for music, and the other sucks at it. Anyway, the highest card for a PSP is 2GB. For $450.

So, iPod mini 4GB: $199
PSP With 2GB Pro Duo: $700

Once again, where is the comparison?

How come flash memory is so slow to write to? Surely it should be really quick? Meh...my limited knowledge showing through the facade of intelligence ;)

Trust me, it won't take anywhere near that long. I'd be surprised if it took 15 minutes to fill the 6GB.

Oh, and what are people showing for shipment dates? 25th here, which fits with what the site says. Hopefully it'll be here on Monday :)

Yeah, I am a PC user that's why it says 12" Alu in my profile. And I guess you read my post real thoroughly judging by your answer saying that I am just complaining about having to pay $20 extra when all I said was that I am complaining about having to pay $20 extra...

Until you all guys can read I'm just going to pass this thread on...

No offence, but I can't be stuffed going to a user's profile for every message I see. If your shuffle is impeded by your PowerBook having a USB 1.1 connector, then why the hell did you buy the shuffle in the first place, eh?

I guess then it is really the flash memory. Thanks for pointing that out. I was worried there for a sec. :)

Actully, the mini's microdrive is inside a CompactFlash card. These CompactHDDs can be bought, but they are very expensive, and are generally used in high-end camera. A 6GB CompactHDD is much more expensive than a 6GB iPod mini. It's better to buy a mini, gut it, and get the card out.

I said iPod shuffle, not iPod mini.

Price on Australian Apple Homepage wrong!!!!

The one that say "Music run in family" on black background. (in au$)

shuffle - 512mb $149, 1 gb $299 (What!!!!)
mini - 4gb $299, 6gb $359
iPod - 20gb $499 (What, again)
photo - 30gb $499 (same as 20gb iPod!!!!!) 60gb $649

Fix it quick, Steve!!! :)

So they keep cutting the price and cutting hardware--no dock, no firewire cable--what next? How about cutting the price another 100 or 150 for what comes in the box right now?

I can get an iPod with a colour screen, 10GB of extra storage, at the expense of no firewire cable or AC adaptor, for the same price as a 20GB iPod?

That is one hell of a free upgrade!

I am sure this has been said, but I think they really need some more masculine colors. The new blue is hideous, and while I am fine with a pink dress shirt, a pink iPod is taking it a bit far.

The silver is really the only option. Would it kill them to offer a navy blue, a dark metallic red, a charcoal, etc? WHO is going to want that ugly turquoise?

Who'd want 18 hours battery life as well i suppose. :p

I just bought an iPod shuffle (512MB) at the Apple Store on Michigan Avenue here in Chicago. The place was pretty empty, word of the "new" iPods must not be spreading that fast, I expected the place to be packed. They have an abundance of shuffles by the way, but only the 512MB version.

That being said, in regards to this iPod "update", I think it's great. Kind of sad to see the iPod 20GB which I just bought a month ago, suddenly become the black sheep of the regular-sized iPod family, but what the heck. :D

Stilll though, no firewire? Boo Apple, shame on you.

First: Read my post before hitting reply.
Second: Reply to what I wrote and don't suggest stuff I never said.
Third: Cut the insults.

When you can follow these small three steps to a normal discussion we can talk again. If not, oh well, my life goes on...

Sorry, let me try this again.

“Now where exactly is the dramatical price cut? The $50 on the 4GB? They could've done that with the option to choose a cable too.”

I see this is a matter of opinion. I think moving from $250 to $200 is dramatic. Your statement that they could have included a cable is pointless. They could include a 50” plasma TV. They could include a lot of stuff. Apple puts a lot of resources into deciding what features and accessories to include with their products. Obviously, it was decided that hitting the $199 price point was more important than including a cable that most people can’t use, already have, or can afford to buy separately.

“Ok now, where is the point against having the option to have the FW instead? What about the huge amount of Mac users that have made the iPod what it is today?”

This is not true. Apple provides every iPod user the option to purchase a FW cable. Most iPod users won’t need too because USB 2.0 works for them or they have a FW cable. If that user doesn’t fit those two categories, they can purchase a cable. Not having the cable standard does nothing the past Mac users.

I’m just not sure what you are complaining about. Apple provides a better product cheaper and you complain.

I'm don't care so much for firewire cables. What's got me in twisted panties is Apple did not include built-in laser pointer capability.

I meant that the reduction of price was implied by the introduction of the new 6GB not by switching the cable.
I know that you can purchase the FW cable but what would've been the harm in letting people choose what cable they want?
As I said I really like this update feature wise, just not the way it was done.

I understand the problem with the missing FW cable. However, please don't exaggerate. The last Mac to get USB 2.0 was the eMac (in April '04). So except for the eMac, all Macs have come with USB 2.0 ports for more than a year now.
OK. I was off by six months (less actually, but I'll give you the benefit). Wow. The point is that this chucks the finger at the vast majority of Apple users who, I think it is reasonable to say, do not buy a new machine every year. Apple loudly and clearly feels it is more important to satisfy Windows users. Otherwise, why not have cable choice with the order? Simple solution and doesn't piss off a bunch of rumor site readers :D

Not actually a price drop on the 60GB iPod Photo

I'm surprised that people are excited over this supposed price drop! They cut out lots of "stuff" that came with the 60GB iPod that adds up to quite a bit. (Firewire cable, dock, AV cable, case) It does allow people to accessorize as they see fit though. I don't use the dock on my 20GB 4G iPod because of the iSkin case being a pain in the neck to remove.

The iPod charges while your Mac is asleep.

That's not true at all! Unless you have a powered Firewire hub, it won't charge. In fact, if your ipod is plugged into your mac and it goes to sleep, the ipod may continue to be on, which will actually drain the battery and lead to the battery running out sooner. This happend to me and now I have to get a new battery much sooner than I would have hoped :(

What I object to is that Apple dragged their feet so long in upgrading their machines to USB 2.0. The cost would have been tiny, but I guess every bit of profit margin counts.

It's not just Apple. Take a look at the digital camera market. Many cameras still come with USB 1.1 including those costing $500 or more. Worse yet are the $1000+ cameras that come with USB 2.0 full-speed instead of hi-speed. These run at the same 12Mbps as USB 1.1. Unbelievable.

Logistically, how do you propose Apple pull this off in a retail environment? Remember, they already had experience with this with the 2G iPods.
