The optional FireWire and USB 2.0* dock makes charging and synching a simple, one-step operation. There's even an audio line out port for connecting to powered speakers or a home stereo.

From apple store. I'm assuming it does. It Better. It's what I'm getting now, might as well for a couple extra buxx over the 20 dollar firewire cable. If we are using the it only costs 20 buxx extra argument.

Logical Product Line

How about, to make the iPod line even more logical (the bottom of the line is a little screwy now):

NEW iPod Shuffle- 1 GB: $99
NEW iPod Shuffle- 2GB: $149
iPod Mini- 4 GB: $199
iPod Mini- 6GB: $249
iPod- 20 GB: $299
iPod Photo- 30GB: $349
iPod Photo- 60 GB: $449

Eventually, we could see the line changing to the following, with the iPods getting color screens and the iPod Photo and iPod U2 Edition disappearing:

iPod Shuffle- 1 GB: $99
iPod Shuffle- 2 GB: $149

NEW Color iPod Mini- 4 GB: $199
NEW Color iPod Mini- 6 GB: $249

NEW Color iPod- 20 GB: $299
NEW Color iPod- 40 GB: $349
NEW Color iPod- 60 GB: $399
NEW Color iPod- 80 GB: $449

Even later, we could see this:

iPod Shuffle- 1 GB: $79
iPod Shuffle- 2 GB: $119

iPod Mini Photo- 4 GB: $169
iPod Mini Photo- 6 GB: $199
iPod Mini Photo- 8 GB: $229
iPod Mini Photo- 10 GB: $259

iPod Video: 20 GB: $309
iPod Video: 40 GB: $359
iPod Video: 60 GB: $399
iPod Video: 80 GB: $439

Eventually shifting to:

iPod Shuffle- 2 GB: $79
iPod Shuffle- 4 GB: $119

iPod Mini Video- 4 GB: $169
iPod Mini Video- 8 GB: $199
iPod Mini Video- 12 GB: $229
iPod Mini Video- 16 GB: $269
iPod Mini Video- 20 GB: $309

iPod Video- 40 GB: $359
iPod Video- 60 GB: $389
iPod Video- 80 GB: $419
iPod Video- 100 GB: $449

I think the reason why people seem to be so pissed, is that it seems that Apple, by including the USB cable rather than the Firewire cable is saying that they'd rathers support the Windows community rather than their faithful Mac community.

I know all new mac come with USB 2.0. Do I have to buy a Mac every year for Apple to see me as a valueable customer.

The U2 iPod still includes a FireWire cable. And it's still in black and red.

The only real price increase is for the 20 GB iPod, which essentially went up in price by $19.

on this whole FW/USB2 thing--

I agree with iGary & co. in Mac-nerd (or Mac-intelligentsia, if you prefer) principle. Apple should not appear to diminish their support for FW. I am personally disappointed to see this happen. But as has been said, we are the minority here in iPod-land.

BUT from a business standpoint-- and Apple is a business, not a treehouse club-- this makes perfect sense. The only people they are leaving out in the cold are Mac users who don't either already own this cable from a previous iPod, or don't have a USB2 Mac. That's a niche of a niche. But even then, the cold they're left out in isn't that cold. It requires $19 or so to come on back into the FW warmth.

So while in principle I don't think this is ideal, I can't really fault Apple for it, and I do not think it's the end of the FW-world. No true Mac-nerd would let something this small actually diminish their faith in all things Mac; if it helps Apple sell more iPods/make more profit to be re-invested back into the Mac side of the business, that's a good thing.

Now, as for not including the power adapter ...

Couldn't agree more.

Yes, I quoted the whole thing just to be sure more people will read his post.

20 gb iPod still include both cables plus AC adaptor.

I just picked up my first iPod! While at the Apple store I also got a 512mb Shuffle. My first observations with the 30 gig ipod is that it is slim. I believe it's a bit more slim than the 40gig iPod photo but I could be wrong. It came with a power adapter, USB cable and headset. :D

Interestingly, I was going to buy a Mac mini, and never thought an iPod was anything other than a slick but rather pricey mp3 player that I have never been able to justify.. Having just read the bumf on the ipod photo Im wondering now about dumping the mac mini idea for an iPod photo - music storage, a mega megabyte "pen drive" and add in downloading photos straight from the camera and showing slideshows straight from the ipod.

That is one impressive multi media box in your top pocket v one impresive complete Mac under your arm. Decisions.

think of it this way,

for 179 $ you can get a rio player, which has 20 gigs, is smaller than the ipod, has a better interface, comes with a dock, that can dock over ethernet ,has a better battery life

why would you buy a mini for 149? or a 20 gig for 249?

apple has to do something, there are a lot of other options. Having been an owner of a rio car, i can tell you that the rio interface is better on their 20 gig player (as it is close to the riocar).

Thanks. Yeah, personally I disagree with Apple's decision, I just don't think it's that bad/ that big of a deal. The best part of iGary's point, I think is that Apple didn't HAVE to do this. Their savings is probably minor. They probably will make a bit of money from selling the cables, but not much.

But really I think most iPod consumers won't even blink at this. For all the people that are getting more iPod and less accesories for less $, but wouldn't have bought all of the accessories anyway, this update is good news. The fact that we're all even here, on a Mac message board, on page 17 of a thread, means that while we are very important customers to Apple on an individual basis, we're probably pretty far out of the mainstream of iPod consumers.

i only have usb 1.1 in my imac. these ipods are useless.
It's worse than that. The USB cable Apple puts in the box is only 6 feet long. I keep my iPod no less than 8 feet from my Powerbook, making these new iPods totally useless.

Argh, I wanted a mini but was expecting some "new" colors. I don't see what's new about those shades? Just the same looking a bit darker to me. I as hoping a black, or dark blue. Bah. Still don't know whether to get the 6GB or save up another $50 to get the 30GB photo.

haha when I bought my 40gb 4G iPod it was the "biggest and greatest" iPod they sold at the time. Now it's obsolete. haha. I love technology.

I still do love my iPod though :D

I went ahead and ordered the 60Gb iPod Photo (the one on the special deals page) for $479 ($30 more than the 'new' 60Gb... the AV dock is $40, so I saved $10).

I just saved $130 (original price was $599). I did order the 'new' 60Gb, but saw it didn't have firewire cables or a dock. I did some looking around and found the 'older' 60Gb for only $30 more and had them cancel that order, then order me the older version.

Now I just wait for it to arrive.

Quite how anyone can describe the Rio Karma as smaller than the iPod is beyond my comprehension. Yes, it's not as tall, but it's wider and at least twice the thickness.

To be honest, I don't think there's anything between the two interfaces, although I do think the click wheel wins that particular battle for Apple.
