I found this at the site:

"MagSafe Airline Adapter
Out of power in flight? Plug your MacBook into the new MagSafe Airline Adapter and get back to work (or play)."

the link goes to here:
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?productLearnMore=MA598Z/A

The link is goes to the "We'll be back soon" store page

What the heck is a MagSafe Airline Adaptor?

They've sold this for months. It' lets you get power from some aircraft seats. Normally only on medium to long haul, sometimes not available in cattle class.

And you guys do realise that this update will be the MB for the next 6+ months? Not using SR may not seem too bad now, but in 3-4 months when EVERY other laptop will be shipping with it then it may be a big deal.

But what does SR offer that we would need that badly? You make it sound like SR has some killer-feature that we can't live without. What is it?

Wow.....can't believe the sobbing going on here....

Macbooks get a speed bump. Great! They'll get homepage real estate until WWDC which will most likely bring either LED backlit Macbook Pros (with supposedly a refresh of the case) and/or Macbook Mini. At that point, that will share homepage real estate with the iPhone. They got this out of the way...

And prehistoric technology? Mag-safe adapter, built-in camera, magnetic lid mechanism....rriiiiigghhhht.

And I know why the store came up and then went back down again...there were some interesting typos on one of the pages...

Store is still down. Seems a long time since they've already announced the new MacBooks. Think there is a "one more thing", the subtle version? Please, new full-size iPods. I know, I know, Christmas shopping season and not a day sooner, but I can dream.

Your post makes me feel happy inside again. :D
Someone with a brain who understands these updates AREN'T bad.

I'm glad I'm wasn't waiting for and update to buy a MacBook because after this many months since the last refresh this morning's "update" is pretty lousy. :)

Perhaps this is just meant to hold people over for a little while as opposed to 6-7 more months.

C'mon MacBook Pro's!

I think he said in an earlier post that he wants to play WoW on it. The only real feature has for your average consumer is the use of the x3100 GPU over the 950GMA, which only really benefits (as I understand from reviews etc) the casual gamer who wants to game on a laptop.

New MBP NEXT Tuesday

So far, the guy at the electronics store I went to on Saturday who sells apple products (Not an official Apple store) is correct. He said that Macbooks are going to be released this Tuesday and MBP are will be released next Tuesday. This is what he was thinking based on what his supplier was saying. He said they are running out of MPB and he can't order anymore. He has to wait until next Tuesday before he can order more.

A little more patients and yes, I trust this guy. He seemed to have been around long enough to understand how it works at Apple.

All whining aside (I'm not in the market for a MacBook, nor do I really care what Apple do at the low end), this is a pretty lame update. The apologists really need to shut their traps on this one; regardless of the laughable hysteria of the whiners, your toadying is getting embarassing. This bump could have come at any time, but coming less than a week after the release of Santa Rosa, it's almost as though they're deliberately updating just to say, "No, we WON'T be using Santa Rosa for now, so shaddup about the graphics already!!". It's ashame that they still feel they have to cripple the low end just to make the high end more attractive. Nothing new there though.

I have to laugh at the folks saying "Oh, now I'll just buy a Sony." Pfft. Right. That's like saying you couldn't get the car you wanted, so you'll buy a boat instead. Who the hell considers Macs and PCs interchangeable?? They're not just different brands. You're going to radically change your entire user experience, all the programs you use, because of different hardware specs? It makes no sense.

Yeah, instead of getting 5 FPS, you would be getting 10 FPS. Twice as fast, but still to slow to be useful.

I'd prefer to take the 100% GPU performance increase along with little/no CPU increase. It is a consumer laptop after all, 2GHz Core 2 Duo should be enough for everyone. ;)

Without talking about the performance increase of Santa Rosa (there is some, but it is rather minor) I'd like to say that I don't really understand this upgrade...

Apple has known for a long time that Santa Rosa is coming, it even was delayed for a couple of Months, but I knew about Santa Rosa in august last year. So let's agree that Apple knew before me (duh). This means they've had at least half a year time (counting Intel's development time to get the first samples out) now to tune the MacBook for Santa Rosa, but they chose not to... Why ? They knew that every other manufacturer was going to offer the upgrade... Again : why not offer Santa Rosa.

This has got me really puzzled...

Lets face it, many people out there do not know what Santa Rosa is good, or why they should pay more for what seems to be not all that great. Obviously, everybody here does cause it's a Mac Rumors forum and that's what we're all interested in.
Maybe Apple doesn't see the benefit at this point as it hasn't been advertised that much (or at least enough for them) in the main stream media and so it is only a select group that would even be expecting it.
By releasing a small speed bump, they get to advertise that their laptops are now faster and hense better. Although many of us may be angry about it, from their point of view there aren't enough of us. Don't panic, it'll come eventually...

Well, I have to buy a new laptop due to moving abroad and been looking to buy a macbook for ages. I have held off for about a month in case of an update but I have to get one by the end of this week so really this update is perfect for me... I was prepared to buy one of the other macbooks just out of neccesity but now getting a little more for my money is great. I'm no expert on pcs but I still think macs are really good value when you compare to the other pcs out there (in the uk anyway), for 2.0 processor you generally pay about £1,000... Nice to see a small price cut too as here we're overcharged by a fair amount.

Totally agree. I bought my MacBook the day the first ones hit Apple retail store shelves last year. Hardly prehistoric. Fully intend to keep it until at least three or four months before the extended AppleCare expires. Fast, light, does everything I need or want.

As for the store going down and back up, thanks for the clarification. And thanks for dashing my silly hopes for some surprise iPod announcement! Humph.

yeah, seriously...

You are correct...

Huh... old technology at new technology prices! It has the Apple logo on it! Sweet! :D here's my $2000!

Is that a PC with twice the power as my MacBook Pro?

Yup!

Why do you need so much power?

Virus software, spyware, spamware, underware, and this crap software called Vista.

Wow sucks to be you.

Yep PC. That Apple logo that has been in the upper left hand corner of my screen for the last decade and a half must have fooled me. Since 2000 I've seen the quality go down and the comparative prices go up.

Was anyone really expecting anything new? Has Apple ever released a product with new features/technology on a unannounced Tuesday?

I have to laugh at the folks saying "Oh, now I'll just buy a Sony." Pfft. Right. That's like saying you couldn't get the car you wanted, so you'll buy a boat instead. Not quite the greatest argument ever...
While macs and PC's have some vast differences, they still serve the same general purpose. It's not like buying a boat vs buying a car. It's more buying a Ferrari vs buying a Honda.

*shrugs* There is only one reason we didn't see a bigger update. Apple wants to get the entire package ready. Which IMHO includes SR and LED based displays. While it sucks *shrugs* Wait for 3rd quarter guys. What will be released will be worth the wait.
I myself will be waiting on quad cores for the laptop line. Do I need quads? No not always. But during DVD ripping and encoding it would be REALLY nice. Have the thing scale from 2 to 4 when plugged in. Sure its not doable now. The laptop would overheat in a big way. In 2 years when I'm ready to upgrade?

Quad cores based on Penryn.
Second or third Gen LED based displays.
HD-DVD or BR drives.
Large capacity SS drives. (150GB+)

Yah I think in the next year or two we are going to see the perfect storm in terms of a number of developing techs moving from the lab into the real world. Many of which I didn't even list above. The question is will Apple be a leader or a follower in terms of those techs. we'll see.
