Screen size, backlit keyboard, matte screen option, faster processor, still better (but not that much) graphics, better speakers, and more...

I can see your point w/ the screen size, faster procs, etc., but I'm sure some people would still be saying "These features are available, why don't we have them in the Macbook?" To me, it seems like quite a few people want all the latest and greatest technology for $799. While that would be nice, it's not currently possible and they have to realize that and stop complaining about it.

They know if the iTunes CoverFlow scrollbar is blurry, and if Disco and other apps are not fully supported because the graphics suck, and if they can't connect to a 30" monitor.

iTunes, I understand that. I've never heard of Disco so I don't know about that. For really intensive games, yeah it'll suck. Less intensive games should work well enough. 30" monitors would probably be too much for the average user. IMO, if someone really needs a 30" monitor, they'll probably need the power of a MBP.

Are we going to see a macbook 13" with a MATT SCREEN? I have tried to get my head around buying one with a glossy screen but it gave me a headache just looking at it in the shop!!!!

Im all for a faster system but whats the point if I cant stand looking at the screen????

APPLE you need to sort yourselves out!!!!

I need a 13" macbook with a matt screen ...... along with most other people i suspect!

Or do you want people to spend more for a macbook pro?

BY THE WAY, I DONT WANT A 15" MODEL SO I WILL NOT BEND TO GETTING ONE FOR A MATT SCREEN. I'D RATHER SPEND MY MONEY ELSEWHERE.

No, it would not increase the Macbook's price. Why would it?
Since Santa Rosa is so new, it would probably cost more to do it than the way it is.

It's also true that a huge number of people buy computers that don't fit their needs, and don't realize it until after they own it. Saying someone doesn't understand the technology doesn't have anything to do with what they should be getting in a new system.

True. But there's a difference between what they should get and what they think they need.

stop complaining

Why does everyone complain about an update to a macbook that was already fantastic?

If I were running a company like apple that had very specific products and marketed them as well as Apple has, I would be doing the same thing. They are creating a gap between their low and high end notebook computers. All the other companies do the same thing. Dell is only offering SR in two of their Latitude notebooks and they are just over the price of a macbook if you configure them similarly.

I read somewhere that apple currently has 10 percent of the notebook market. For a company that only produces two lines of notebook computers and only six variations within those two lines...I think that's outstanding!

Any extra money you pay to get an apple over a PC is because of all the other things macs do like ilife and OSX. you could save a hundred bucks or so by switching to a PC but if you want to do that....quit complaining and do it!

Apple isnt going to sell you a $600 notebook because in order to do so they would have to compromise quality...they dont want to be known for their cheaply made inexpensive computers...they want to be known for a quality machine that is still within reach price wise.

The RAM and hard drive are already very easily upgradeable down the road when it'll be cheaper and with even greater capacity. The MacBook already is a great piece of hardware short of the video card.

Once you toss in enough RAM the GMA 950 can handle applications and Quartz/Core Image. Don't even talk about 3D gaming.

Macbooks aren't supposed to be gaming computers.

i dont know how to use the quote thing right.

Just click on the quote button on the text you wish to quote. Then the system will place the quote to your reply automatically. If you want to, you can edit the quote by removing content between the quote tags. It's simple, just try it out.

You are telling me that your macbook cant run that game sufficiently? be serious!
I have a Mac mini at work and it struggles to get 15 fps on the lower settings.

I should get Sims 2: Pets and see if multi-threaded OpenGL makes a difference. It seems to make a dramatic change in WoW.

The $300 AppleTV has a better GPU than the $1500 MacBook. Why can people just acknowledge how absurd that is? And people have plenty of reasons to why about that, because unlike Ram and HD, the GPU cannot ever be upgraded, and if you buy a MB in the coming months you'll be stuck with the GMA950 for years. THAT's why the GPU is a big deal and Ram and HD are not. Remember all the

And don't get me started on the Combo drive, that was already embarrassing at the MB introduction a year ago, and getting ridiculous at the C2D update. Now it appears that we'll be entering 2007H2 with Combo drives in a $1100 laptop, when a Superdrive probably costs them less than $10 extra. And then you still have Apple zealots running around spouting crap like, "Apple doesn't use low end components, they just look expensive because they include everything you need OOTB".

At this point, my beef isn't even about actual Superdrives and Combodrives anymore. It's about the attitude of disrespect for their customer, the attitude of, "We know how much you like OS X, so we're going to upsell you for hundreds of bucks for $30 components. What are you going to do, run back to Windows? Linux? Hahaha!".

Macs are still my favorite computers to use, but I don't give a f*ck about Apple Inc, and their f*cking bottom line and their f*cking executives' stock options.

Macbook - Core 2 duo - 1gig ram

mac mini - Core duo - 512mb ram

Huge difference for certain things such as what we are talking about.
Both use the GMA 950. You might get 1-2 more fps using Core 2 Duo Vs. Core Duo.

I thought you were going to bring up something that mattered.

Question

I have a question for all the people in this conversation...

How many people out here who are upset about the update on the macbooks, or lack of update as many people view it, are actually going to buy one, or were planning to buy one until this announcement? just wondering if this affects everyone who is upset or if everyone just wants something to be upset about.

Sounds like a great excuse for a poll. :)

You're not going to see a major frame improvement moving from Core Duo to Core 2 Duo. 1-2% is barely worth mentioning even with a dedicated graphics chip.

True, and I guess comparing notebooks with desktops doesn't really work either.

on another note though, i really dont understand the purchase of a mac mini. it seems pretty weak especially considering you have to supply all your own extremeties like the keyboard mouse and display. doesnt really seem worth it. that always confused me.

But, but...the Macbook has a SCREEN! And LCD panels have lots of processing power!

The drones/trolls/whatever they are just can't. The last time we brought that up they screamed and screeched about how it was TOTALLY DIFFERENT and blah blah blah, excuse excuse excuse.

If Apple had even just dropped in a Geforce 7400 or something and kept everything else the same, I think most people would have seen this as a solid update, as I don't think anyone really cares about Santa Rosa per se, just having a better GPU.

Me. I've been in the market for a laptop for ages, and am pretty much going to decide between Apple and Dell. Dell has some solid notebooks that would fit me, but I'd rather not get one until they get Geforce 8x00 GPUs (and I'd rather not get anything by Microsoft...)

Apple right now doesn't have anything that fits my needs. I was really encouraged by the idea that the Macbook might finally have something resembling a low end GPU, and might finally hit in a 15" model. So my last hope is that Apple finally makes the hard drive in the Pro user capable, and sticks in a decent GPU.

I've saved up $4000 now, ready to drop on a notebook (just in case I end up needing to go with an ultra high-end one)...someone just needs to release something already.
