Just to try and bring this all back to track - couple of opinions on why the new MBs are a good buy:

I think the following quote, from one of the articles, is sound advice. :)

"If your current computer has become a bottleneck to your work efficiency, or is bereft of some feature or technology that could improve your computing experience, that now is the time to upgrade."

That doesn't work for me, because by that definition, I would be buying the newest high-end hardware every single time it was released.

New Macbook and FCP

Hey Guys,

I've taken about an hour to go through these threads, and I'm not really seeing an answer to my question. So, here it goes.

I work for a TV station, and I'm planning on taking some classes this summer in videography to refresh my skills.

On top of that, I want to teach myself FCP. So, my question is this: Can these new Macbooks handle FCP Studio (the current version...not the new Studio 2... I have access to the current version at work)? I would upgrade the Ram and half the full amout of Hard drive space. I'd like to be able to run Motion, Gargage Band, and whatever else comes with the bundle.

I have a buddy who has a G4 that's a couple of years old, and he edits content for air at our station. Surely, these new MBs can run this stuff, but I keep hearing conflicting reports. Any advice?

For the record, I'm not a gamer. I guess that's why I'm specifically asking this question... I see a lot of cons on this machine because of gaming. (?)

Thanks for any help!

-M.

I'm not familiar with Final Cut Pro, but if it meets the specifications, I'd assume it would work fine, as video editing doesn't really use the GPU (at least not yet).

Other issues would be-I'd want to do that on a bigger screen, and the Macbook Pro can have faster hard drives than the Macbook.

Good advice for Apple! :p

:D Yeah, what happens when the new product doesn't meet your needs either? :D

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the video card is supported by Motion. The other Final Cut Studio apps should run ok though.

MB Update

Well now I'm conflicted. I needed to order a new laptop, and technically I was waiting for the next MacBook update to do it, but this one is pretty underwhelming.

I'm fine with the processor speeds, but I want a better graphics card so that I can use Aperture again. Bullocks.

AMEN!, as well as LED screens and DVD Burner w/ Santa Rosa and I'm in. Hey it's my first laptop and first MAC, might as well do it right;) :p

OS X doesn't require this "DX 10" of which you speak.

Windows gaming boxes are cheap to build these days... :p

The problem with DX10 (rather, unified shader architecture and SM4.0/HLSL) support being a problem nowadays is not that some people insist on doing highend gaming on their mac (!) laptops (!!!), it is rather that there is this thing called core video in osx that is there for all developers to make use of, and the more support your graphics card has for whizzbang effects now, the more fully-featured your experience with the OS will be a while down the road.

that would be great, i'm ready to buy a new one now, but i figured i should wait and see.

It's widely suspected they'll be released sometime in June or July..... possibly as early as WWDC on June 11th, or soon before or after.

Geez, are we going to start another whole series of posts on Monday night, like what happened last week? Guys, it's not coming before WWDC (but please surprise me, Apple...)
Rumors usually flare up on the Monday before. Expect any Apple Store downtime to get a lot of attention.

WoW isn't a very demanding game - it's not a big deal to run it on a machine like a MacBook with a GMA950.

No, I'm sure it's very playable. It's decently playable on my 1.66 Core Duo Mini (frame rates in the teens). But it looks very cartoony, none of the pretty options turned on.
