There are plenty of people who never connected the MagSafe charger to a computer, and only a simple wall charger, and had the firmware updated (me included). You just need to sit an iPhone on there to charge.

I personally have no idea what the different firmware changed, as the charger still works the same...
Well I still don't have the update doing just this. Apple should really develop a utility app (or in the setting) to update/report accessory firmware.

If the charger disc is a “smart” device with its own software, it would be really nice to have the ability to customize the charge speed. I really don’t like how fast it changes and makes the phone hot as a result. I’m sure the heat is detrimental to the battery health. I’d rather have a slow charge that runs cool.

No it won't. Apple will simply push you towards the MagSafe duo charger. The Apple watch charger with 2m cable was also quietly discontinued. I wonder why.
It's a joke, a minor firmware update can't double the physical length.

Don't bother with such statements until a supporting proof of statement is provided.
Just for kicks, I plugged my MagSafe charger into my Windows machine and had a look in Device Manager. It shows the USB port as active, but there are no devices on it...meaning only power is being passed to the charger. So it's really not much different than plugging it into a wall.

For it to work on Windows so that iTunes or some other utility could update it, the charger would need to be recognized as a device and have a driver so the OS can communicate with it.

Interesting and makes sense. But what makes a usb c port different on a Mac or iPad? I've tried using a portable battery with usb c port as well as my wall charger with no success. I've placed my iPhone 13 pro max on the charger for days now and never changes the firmware. I can't believe Apple would require a ported device to accomplish the update. I may have to contact support and grill them about it.

Thank you for that elaborate outline on what’s going on with MagSafe in a Windows environment.

I notice on one of mine that updated the iPhone 13 Pro Max will disconnect/reconnect when at 100% charge randomly and it wasn’t doing that before.

Interesting. Before I got my Apple magsafe charger I had one from Amazon 3rd party. Did the same thing with my 13 Pro Max. Since using the apple charger it has not done that (174.0.0.0).

Same, when you look at the battery charge history it looks like it stops and starts charging rather than supplying continuous charge. Wonder if this will effect optimised battery charging.

I am also seeing this and thought I was going nuts.

Will the update happen if an older phone (X) is connected to the MagSafe puck?

I can’t see the MagSafe charger in the ‘About’ settings screen on the X, so aren’t sure if it’ll trigger the update.

I got mine to update by plugging it into my Mac.

I went into System Information and it showed version 1.74 under USB. About 10 seconds later, my iPhone stopped charging, it blipped, and then my iPhone started charging again. Refreshed the page in System Information, and it shows 2.47 now.

Just updated my battery pack! Just stuck it on the back of my 13 mini and it immediately updated! Seems snappier! Edited to say it runs cooler also, and I get more charging time!

Hi,
Thanks for the article informing that there is a firmware update. Also thanks Apple for giving us this update OTA.

Registered today in order to inform or confirm that my magsafe charger updated its firmware automatically today from 171.0.0.0 to 247.0.0.0. My update was initiated after placing my iphone 12 on magsafe, with wifi on, for 12 hours on Saturday night . I could not update otherwise. This was my last chance before giving up. In the morning I got a nice suprise.

I have no Mac or ipad, Windows pc with usb type C 3.1 gen 2 at work refused to update, hub 6 in 1 refused to update, charge overnight on weekdays for 6 hours refused to update.

I am from Europe so update is not region locked though I set my region on iphone settings to United States just in case it helps.

I’m now concerned my MagSafe puck might be fake because it’s not showing up in Settings >About, nor does my iPad Air 4 recognize it and my Mac mini is ancient and doesn’t have USB-C ports.

I got the puck on eBay from a trusted seller with a reputation for selling authentic apple items but damn… do I open a case against them for counterfeit item?

I had a similar experience, and my iPhone 13P would not enable “Optimised Charging” using my eBay MagSafe charger. The final straw was a discolouration on the surface on the charger. I invested in a MagSafe charger from a high street retailer and sure enough, it appears in /Settings/General/About, when connected to my Mac mini it updated its firmware is a few minutes.
Now to see if the phone does the “Optimised Charging” routine at night…

I just purchased one via eBay and the photo isn't an indicator of a fake Magsafe Wireless Charger.

It looked genuine, but photos online didn't match my box and they looked like the fake ones (which means Apple change their box/stickers regularly). It also didn't appear via my iphone settings>about. So, I wanted to check another way.

When plugged into Windows 10, Apple MageSafe started to install (a good sign) but, it could be a fake still.

So, I found an iMac with a USB-C connection. Plugged in and checked USB devices and it shows the device and firmware as 1.74.

I left it 5 mins, checked again and the firmware is showing as 2.47.

So, it is genuine but doesn't appear in about on my phone (maybe this only works for iPhone 12 and above).

Hope this helps someone.

Sounds to me like you have a genuine device, since it's reported as a MagSafe charger by the computer and the Mac shows that it upgraded the firmware.

And yes, the iPhone 12 was the first phone to support MagSafe charging, so I'm guessing the device will only show in the About section on a 12 or newer. To any other iPhone it just appears to be a generic Qi Wireless charger.
