I believe others have mentioned this but just chiming in: There is a noticeable difference in the felt heat from the magsafe charger, post update. Previously I would always notice my iphone magsafe case and the puck to be slightly warm (but definitely not hot) anytime I checked the status of the phone while it was resting at 100% state of charge. I have been checking it regularly since the update and the puck seems cold and almost no perceived heat on the case when I have the phone attached and fully charged at 100%.

I can confirm that I was able to update both of my MagSafe chargers using my iPad Pro 12.9 (3rd generation). There is no indication that anything is happening when the MagSafe charger is connected to the iPad, but in less than a minute, it was updated.

So I just have mine plugged into the wall power. Haven’t plugged it into any PC/iMac or tablet (or anything). I just checked firmware and it shows the updated version.

Apple today released updated firmware for the MagSafe Charger that's compatible with iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 models that have magnets inside. The new firmware is version 10M229, up from 9M5069. Note that in the Settings app, you'll see a version number rather than the firmware number. The new version is 247.0.0.0, and the old one was 174.0.0.0.

The MagSafe Charger initially came out in fall 2020 alongside the iPhone 12 models, and it has previously seen at least one firmware update.

Because firmware updates are done quietly over the air, Apple does not provide release notes, so we do not know what new features or bug fixes might be included in the software.

There is also no clear method for updating a MagSafe charger's firmware, but it needs to be plugged in and connected to an Apple device for a firmware update to initiate.

You can check your MagSafe Charger's firmware by following the instructions in our MagSafe Charger how to.

Update: Apple has also updated the MagSafe Battery Pack firmware. The build number is 2.5.b.0, up from 2.0.2c.0 previously. Use our guide to find your MagSafe Battery Pack's firmware version.

Safari is a lot snapper now, thanks Apple.

I’ll wait and do an overnight charge to see if it updates. This plugging into a usb c port in an Apple device to update is ridiculous

Literally, what is one supposed to do? Go buy a iPad mini 6, update all your MagSafes, and then return the mini? The heat issue is significant and this sounds like a possible fix, yet no update since no USB-C Apple devices in the house. Ridiculous.

Connected MagSafe charger to iPad Pro 2018, nothing showed up on the iPad screen.
Then I placed iPhone 12 Pro Max on top of the puck, no signs of activity either. After roughly 5 minutes I removed the puck from the iPad and connected it to the 20W charger.
iPhone back on top of the puck. Version is now updated to 247, prior one was 174. Magic trick worked fast!
Thanks guys for the tips.

I'm very keen to hear what this firmware update does

Less phone heating up
Less magsafe heating
?????

Does anyone actually use these? If so, why and how to you like it?
I use it beside my bed along with my watch charger. It's nice that I don't have to fumble with a cable in the dark. Just put the phone in the general area and it snaps into place...and then can quickly take it off without being tethered to a cable. I know I used to accidentally yank my cables in the past.

Updated all 3 of mine by plugging into my Mac in less then 5 minutes. Now I'm wondering if the watch charger has firmware and how would you check the version number, I don't see an entry in the about section of the watch when it's connected....

I found it on the watch (not the watch app on the iPhone) while charging under About, scrolling all the way down to the bottom. It was version 1.1.0 or something like that.

Thank you for this. I stopped using mine because the phone and MagSafe seemed to get hot. It’s updated now so let’s see. I find when charging with “old” style Apple chargers, the plug would get warm but the device wouldn’t. I have found with the 20w USB C plugs and MagSafe, it’s the phone that gets hot / warm, and not the plug so tend to only use them if the phone needs a quick top up.
