I have had mine plugged into the wall all the time. It hasn't updated the firmware but each morning, my phone is fully charged. I am not sure I would notice much difference on a morning if anything changed. Not bothered to tell the truth.

Does anyone actually use these? If so, why and how to you like it?
Until yesterday, I had never used one. I had been using Qi charging and twice woke up to my phone almost dead. I saw the MagSafe charger on sale on Amazon and bought two. Last night was the first run. I have a shortcut to turn off the charger when the phone hits 100%. I woke up to my phone being 87%, which was fine.

They updated this afternoon sometime to 247.0.0.0, I didnt do anything special, just kept them plugged into the wall and topped up my phone.

Ever since reading this thread I assumed that either I'd have to wait to get a iPad or Mac with USB-C, or a USB-C wall wart to plug into to get the update to happen since it didn't appear to want to update for the past couple days plugged into the USB-C port on my powered USB hub and my old iMac doesn't have the ports.

Well about 5 mins ago I randomly heard the connection/charging tone from the puck. Went in and checked and it indeed finally updated OTA. No need for a Mac, iPad or wall wart. Just a cheap Amazon 3rd party hub will do the trick.

But why would we need anything besides a wall charger to update? I have a 20w USB C charger where my MagSafe charger is plugged into and it still won't update from 174

It needs the internet from a device, I don't think it has an internal wifi antenna and is able to sync the password with your device

Apple today released updated firmware for the MagSafe Charger that's compatible with iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 models that have magnets inside. The new firmware is version 10M229, up from 9M5069. Note that in the Settings app, you'll see a version number rather than the firmware number. The new version is 247.0.0.0, and the old one was 174.0.0.0.

The MagSafe Charger initially came out in fall 2020 alongside the iPhone 12 models, and it has previously seen at least one firmware update.

Because firmware updates are done quietly over the air, Apple does not provide release notes, so we do not know what new features or bug fixes might be included in the software.

There is also no clear method for updating a MagSafe charger's firmware, but it needs to be plugged in and connected to an Apple device for a firmware update to initiate.

You can check your MagSafe Charger's firmware by following the instructions in our MagSafe Charger how to.

Update: Apple has also updated the MagSafe Battery Pack firmware. The build number is 2.5.b.0, up from 2.0.2c.0 previously. Use our guide to find your MagSafe Battery Pack's firmware version.

The little trick to get the update is to plug the MagSafe charger directly into a Mac USB port, or apparently an iPad USB-c port. leave it there a few minutes and the update will install it self.

Wait so you think the update to the MagSafe charger is direct? Like the AirPods I’m sure the iPhone gets the update and transfers it to the device.

Okay so are you saying the update can only happen via a usb c connection and not wirelessly? Others have said they got the update without any usb c intervention. Just normal charging. Mine hasn’t yet updated and I have no usb c device to connect to.

Wonder if you connect it to a windows laptop it will update.

Oh nice. Is that with a smart outlet?

No, a Windows laptop will not work to update the MagSafe charger firmware.
And the reason why? Are you saying only an Apple device can update that charger? Is in tied to an Apple ID? So many questions for those of us (me) who don't have access to a usb c Apple device. Do I need to walk into an Apple store and plug it in?

Don't bother with such statements until a supporting proof of statement is provided.

I doubt we see any thing like that. AirPods been around for years and nothing ever comes out about them for firmware.

Yes, but we can certainly have more than one person report if Windows works to get the update. Several people (at least on this forum and Reddit) would be using a Windows computer, not everyone would be all Mac - that's what I think. Surely we would have a lot of world buy this puck and connect it to their Windows computer while travelling or at a desk.

You know... I'm really curious if it is the Mac that is updating the charger. Perhaps it's just simply the act of the charger being reset/rebooted after being powered up again, and checks for an update the next time a phone is mounted? I doubt very many people leave a MagSafe charger plugged into their Mac, so a "reboot" would have had to take place when they moved it from their wall to the Mac.

Does unplugging the charger from the wall and plugging it back into the wall cause it to update soon after your phone is mounted?

Does the Mac update the charger when the phone is not mounted?

I can tell you unplugging and plugging in the charger from the wall charger did not evoke the update. I tried a windows laptop and nothing either. I will try windows again I can leave the phone charging beyond a few minutes. Still on 174

The next update will address the cable length
No it won't. Apple will simply push you towards the MagSafe duo charger. The Apple watch charger with 2m cable was also quietly discontinued. I wonder why.

There are plenty of people who never connected the MagSafe charger to a computer, and only a simple wall charger, and had the firmware updated (me included). You just need to sit an iPhone on there to charge.

I personally have no idea what the different firmware changed, as the charger still works the same...
