Apple Releases New MagSafe Charger Firmware

Apple today released updated firmware for the MagSafe Charger that is designed to work with the iPhone 12 and later and the AirPods Pro 2. The new firmware is version 10M1821, up from the prior 10M229 firmware. Note that in the Settings app, you'll see a different version number than the firmware number, with the update displayed as version 255.0.0.0 (the prior firmware was 247.0.0.0).

The MagSafe Charger was initially released in the fall of 2020 alongside the iPhone 12 models, and this is the third firmware update that Apple has provided.

As firmware updates are released quietly over the air, Apple does not provide release notes. We do not know what new features or bug fixes might be included in the software, but given the recent release of both the iPhone 14 models and the AirPods Pro 2, the firmware could have optimizations for these devices.

Personally, I would have versioned this update 256.0.0.0 because I am a weirdo and 255.0.0.0 looks like a subnet mask.

Yes, that's how hardware is updated. My camera lenses also receive firmware updates for newcamera compatibility.

It is well known how to update this firmware. Leave it connected to an iPhone overnight or connect it to a Mac for an immediate update.

Crazy. Just updated it. It was on 247.0.0 now it's on 255. Just plugged it in and in a few seconds (maybe a minute) it automatically updated.

Can also update quickly by plugging into a USB-C iPad. Just updated with my iPad mini 6.

Just like the MagSafe battery pack. The best way to update these is to plug it into a Mac. It will update within the minute. You can see the version in the System Information app too. The MagSafe wireless data transfer speed is way too slow, it will take hours to update from an iPhone.

My phone chimed twice this morning, first when attaching MagSafe, second what seems like 10-20 seconds later.

At first I thought the alignment somehow slipped after putting the magnetically paired devices down, but no, they were still centrally aligned.

Maybe when the firmware’s updated, the MagSafe reboots and briefly stops charging causing a second chime on the phone when it resumes.
