I can confirm the iPad way is working.
It worked with iPadOS 15.7
did not work with iPadOS 16.1 Beta
I am on the iPad beta, probably why I can’t get my charger to update. I can’t get the overnight update on the phone either for some reason .

Is there an easy way to downgrade to 15.7 without a computer? I tried searching but can’t seem to find the answer…

Unfortunately, there is not. If you are on the beta, you would need to use a computer to install the older firmware. Also be advised that any backups created a newer iOS version will not work on 15.7 or any older build of iOS. They are not backwards compatible.

If you plug the charger into a mac via USB-C, does the phone have to be on it for it to update? Thanks

My wife's MagSafe updated instantly when connected to M1MBP, which is connected to Internet but not on its own charger. But can't get mine to update at all. tried M1 MBP, M1 Air, iPad Pro. It shows up in Settings > General > About so don't think it is a fake. It is on 247.0.0.0. Saw two people say they were on 174.0.0.0 earlier in thread which is puzzling.
It's 11/10/22 and I'm barely jumping from 174.0.0.0 to 255.0.0.0 LOL

Can we use a third party MagSafe charger without firmware updates? I was thinking about getting one but not from Apple.

I know this is an older comment, but to help clarify to anyone else that stumbles upon this. Any 3rd party “magsafe” chargers do not charge at 15 watts and are limited to 7.5 watts. Only the official Apple MagSafe chargers charge at 15 watts.

Thanks for answering my question!

According to Belkin you are wrong:

There are few official certified chargers that do 15W. There are a bunch of non certified ones that are stuck at 7.5W.

Belkin calls the 15w ones MagSafe, and non 15w ones Magnetic

Anker similarly calls the 15w one MagSafe, and non 15w ones MagGo or Magnetic Wireless
