I plugged mine into my MacBook Air and at first it did nothing so I went away and was doing other things when I heard it my phone chime maybe five minutes later.

It definitely works better with this new firmware!…

Seriously though I would like to know exactly what it does and how this update happens without connecting it to a MacBook. Clearly there has to be data capabilities with MagSafe if it can update the firmware.
It seems using a Mac creates a data path for the update not there in stand alone mode. Wonder if trying it on a windows machine with usb c if it works.

Still no luck here.

Well, I suspect if it’s transferring data from the iPhone through MagSafe, it has to be extremely slow. Perhaps if you leave it overnight.

I am correct that people have noticed this update happening without connecting to a Mac? If anyone has updated without using a Mac let us know.

I don’t think it would work on the windows machine just because of it’s not going to have the connection to Apple services. Maybe if you had iTunes installed but I doubt it.

I was able to update both of my MagSafe chargers using the USB-C port on my iPad Pro

Wonder if the new firmware enables the ability to work from a standard 5V USB power source , all be it slower. this was my number one frustration with the MagSafe charger, lots of USB-C sockets (or USB-A sockets with adapter) on trains and in office workspaces are actually just 5V 2A classic USB power (not USB PD) so the MagSafe charger wouldn’t work at all and has to use the lightning cable. In fact it didn’t work from my iPad Air either (to charge the phone from the iPad).

Is there a 2A USB-C power source? If my MagSafe puck wasn’t USB-C I would have tried it with a less powerful adapter.

I plugged in my Duo and set my iPhone 14 Pro Max on it. The iPhone started charging. When I checked it in Settings the firmware number was 0.0.0.0. I left my iPhone on the Duo for about a half an hour. When I checked the settings again the firmware number was 186.0.0.0.
Mine did the same thing. Gotta check the MagSafe charger at my office...

I leave my iPhone 13 pro max on the charger overnight each and every night. Checking again this morning and it still is on 247. I have no Apple products with usb-c so I'm hoping when my usb-a to usb-c adaptor arrives next week I can try it on my MacBook pro 2015.

Mine updated all on its own just by having the iPhone on the charger overnight.
It’s good to confirm this. I just wonder how the data transfers. I don’t think regular inductive charging allows for data communication. Leave it to Apple to figure something out like that.

Question though. Do you have an iPhone 14 or iPhone 13? Are you on iOS 16.0.2? I wonder if this update has anything to do with what iPhone or iOS version you have.

Is your iPhone updated to the latest version of iOS? If it is I would try restarting your iPhone. I mean it can’t hurt.

I’ve tried this on my iPad Pro with no luck either. What was your process?
I just tried mine with the iPad air mini 6 and it got updated to 255. What I did was to plug it in and left it for 10 mins. I am on the iPadOS 15.7. Hope this helps.

I simply plugged the MagSafe Charger (without the iPhone on it) into the iPad Pro —which was connected to my home WiFi -running the latest iPadOS on the USB-C port. I let it sit for a couple of minutes. Then plugged the MagSafe back into the charger and placed the iPhone back on the MagSafe charger puck and observed in Settings on the iPhone that MagSafe firmware had updated. 🤷🏻‍♂️
