IS THIS A JOKE!?

This is sooo very sad. I really was hoping for a true upgrade from Apple. No reduction in costs and what a poor upgrade in performance. Still does not justify paying the extra $$$ over an iBook. The iBook has an 8x Superdrive, still less expensive to put a 100gb 5400 rpm drive into one, oh, I could go on. I'm disgusted.

Is there a firmware upgrade possible for the scrolling touchpad on older Powerbooks? It looks to be the same. I know with the previous revisions, you could set preferences to use the touchpad as a mouse button. I think it should be possible to retrofit older PBs.

FYI, The 12" is $100 cheaper than the previous model.

I think what most impresses me is actually witnessing the computers getting better and cheaper right before my eyes. It seems in the game of computers, waiting always wins.

Really? While you are waiting, I'll be using my computer. So for the 10 months that you are waiting and being deprived of a PB, you willing to save $200-$300?

This PB update is better than the last PB update. At least with the 15" models, it seems to be the sweet spot.

you are absolutly right, but i already know that 256 ram and 60 gb are not enough, even 80 gb are not that much, but still 20gb more. so before i upgrade an ibook, i will stick to the new pb.

but is the wifi thing working that much better on an ibook? if yes, is it possible to get a better wifi in/output at the pb's??

thanks a lot

Only good solution is to buy wifi extender points. In a house or apartment you might need one, I know some of the other WiFi base stations have dual antennas which is worth it, some of the others only have ONE, I also know you can get antenna extenders and signal boosters for a base station. That will help, though not an elegant solution. Or you can buy an AirPort Express though that would be running into deep pockets $$$. ;) :)

Microsoft has a titlt-wheel design-is Apple's anything similar (MS's scrolls horizontally and vertically)-I guess it's similar but implemented in a trackpad in a innovative method. Mobility 97000-fine (9800 is too hot for the PB). Dual link DVI is new to some models, BTO on one, standard on the 17" and BT 2.0. The big news-a scroll wheel feature (maybe the Apple mice will get it next).

RIGHT ON MAYA!!

MAYA, blah, blah, blahed....

Glad you said it the way I wanted to. Anybody enthused by this update is a fool. Why did Apple even bother? This is a joke.

Wicked thought. Might be enough for me to scrap the my PM Dual G5 - I'd keep the 23" Cinema though - best of many worlds.

Has anyone thought that perhaps the G5 PowerBook just might not run well with Panther? Maybe they know that it will only perform/benchmark higher with Tiger as OS?

Just wondering.

OS X, has this strange need for faster HDD speed. The faster the HDD the quicker OS X will boot and run, the more ram you have also better. Though the whole issue is faster boot time. A RAID will speed boot, save, copy, erase, time. :) Enough physical ram will boost the rest of the system and applications. :)

I just want a RAID solution to go. :)

ROTF, this would have been a good update some months back. Though any update at present is better than nothing RIGHT. ;) :) Its just been way too long that is all. :)

I wonder if this will tempt those who have been waiting to buy a PB?

I for one will continue waiting :p

The problem with people like you is that your never satisfied. By time the G5 come out, you will want somethign else.... JUST BUY THE DAMN THING!!!! So what if its not as fast as the G5... If you keep putting it off, you will never get one..
If you need something that powerful, get a desktop... I think for the price... its a great deal and fast enough to do almost anything most people need.

Oh my, aren't we a sarcastic one. hehe.

but i wonder, did anybody experience any problems with wlan on an university campus or at work with a powerbook. if yes, do you think they solved the problem with the"new" pb's.

i'm asking, because wlan will be pretty much importent when i puchase a powerbook or an ibook.

thanks a lot for your advice.

It seems all this update really boils down too are the yesterdays BTO options that are made standard. And a price drop Yeah!!!

Apple really has hit a wall with the PowerBook line, this is just embarrassing.

I agree and wish they had added the lighted keyboard on 15"' entry level one!

You should not have too many problems with a wlan indoors on campus, however outdoors you might have a few drops depending on how many access/extender point the school has in place. :)

fwiw: MacMall (and probably other places) have the "old" powerbooks for $300 less than yesterday except for the 17" which is $500 less, this is a pretty good estimate of what the updates are worth

167MHz FSB.. bah.. only the truly desperate will defend Apple on this one.. "but it's not their fault, it's Moto's fault!" They make the computers, they charge the premium, it's their fault.

The only reason people like the G5 chip is because it has a faster bus when compared to the current G4 that is all. No one is saying the G4 is trash when compared to the G5, if FreeScale can released a G4 with a comparable bus speed to the G5 then this would be great. Have you tried working with video, 3d and audio on a G4 bus...painful.

And this individual can wait if they please, its they money and investment into something they will have to use and be happy with who are you to say otherwise. ;) :)

If it were me I would wait for since I do video and 3D and some audio. :)

Don't you mean people who dream that 167MHz is all that you need defend Apple and FreeScale. ;) :)

Embarrassing indeed and you are supposed to use the iLife DCC suite with this bus speed. :p

iLife and the iMac G5 now actually look good together. :)

New PB - worth of old PB = I get a new PB?

Hi, where do you try to evaluate the resale value of your old PB? Do you take that into consideration when drooling and fantasizing over a new one? I was thinking, no way can I afford a new one, but then I realized I might get something for my old one (12" 768 RAM, super drive) and be a leg up on the new price?

Or perhaps I am dreaming still!

I am going to scope up prices for the last rev 17" PowerBook and see if the price is tempting. ;) :)

Heck I already have a PB and an iBook why not add a 17" to the mix. :)
