I'm trying to decide between a ibook and a powerbook. I don't mind the price, but how do they compare in terms of battery life. Listing saids 5 for the powerbook 12" and 6 for ibook. Anyone with real world experience?
Took 3-3.5 hours to run down a battery on a New iBook 14" two weeks ago running a DV the whole time to see how long it would last. New Powerbooks are supposed to have better batteries than the previous ones (from yesterday), but nothing to compare with. Will let you know when my new 15" is delivered in a few days. :D

i think this means that powerbooks will be the first to have intel. . . since they have gotten the least upgrades !!!!!!! and everyone wants the G5 PB

Amazing, my powerbook (15", 1.5Ghz, 1GB, 128MB) is almost 1.5 years old and still totally up to date!! :)

Sorry for the guys who have been waiting for good updates though..

Not great overall, but great for my needs. Now I can survive until the intel PBs. Not sure I would have made it much longer on my 500 MHz TiBook. Of course I would have ... who am I kidding ... I just wanted a new toy. :D

15" with 1,5 gig of RAM??

Hi,

I am planning on ordering a 15 Inch Powerbook. Apple BTO RAM is still to expensive in my opinion, and since the new 15" comes with a single 512MB module, I was wondering, if I would be able to add another 1GB module, or does PC4200 RAM only work in pairs?? Another question is, should I just go for the 100GB 5400RPM drive or should I invest another 100€ for the 100GB 7200RPM drive? I am mostly working with medium sized Photoshop files and CAD (Vectorworks). Thanks in advance for your Help...

Well, for anyone wanting to know what the Powerbooks SHOULD be like these days, you should check out the Asus W2Vc and W1Vc.

Wow, I wasn't outrageously impressed either, but you guys seem really pissed... Hmm..

Last week:
iMac's were upgraded 100MHz, DDR2, iSight, Front Row, double-layer, and graphics. For the same price.
15" PowerBooks got no MHz, DDR2, no iSight, Front Row isn't really applicable for a laptop, double-layer, graphics, new screens, and better battery life. Plus, it's about $300 cheaper.

Doesn't sound that bad to me...

The RAM only works in pairs if it's a dual channel configuration... ahem... which it isn't. So nothing to worry about there if my information is correct. If money isn't an issue, definitely go for the 7200, but 5400 is still very respectable in notebook terms.

I really don't think this is true anymore. I have a rev. A dual G5. No problems. I have a rev. A G4 iBook. No problems. My wife has a rev. A iPod mini. No problems.

What about the 1G iPods? I never heard of a fatal flaw.

I'm just sayin'.

Thank you!! I'm so sick of this "we have to wait not only for intel but for rev. B" nonsense. You take a bit more of a risk with rev. A, but only marginally so. Honestly, the vast majority of apple's rev. A's are totally fine.

My ibook 12" (1.33 Ghz) gets over four hours with full brightness, airport, safari, and word. Lose the airport and that goes up, turn down the brightness and you're over 5 hours. Don't know how that compares to the current 12", but I do know that my old rev. B 12" couldn't get close to that.

I guess it's just that these upgrades are like putting a big aerodynamic wing on a 900cc Fiat...

But seriously, the upgrades do address certain areas that needed to be addressed, but what people really want from the Powerbook range is power!

Hi Everyone! I'm excited enough about this cause I've never owned a laptop before and have been waiting for this about 2 months. Please forgive the ignorance, but I need some very basic computer advice here:
I'm a full time grad student and will be using this for doing papers and researching online, as well as storing aaaaall my digital photos on it. I might do other more interesting, challenging, creative things later on down the line.

What should I add to have it be very fast and be able to hold all these pics plus whatever future software I might need (typical)? I'm most concerned about storing a lot of digital pics, and having speed. I'm willing to upgrade. What would be the best mix?

Thanks!

While I was hoping for a speed increase with the 7448 chip which is available, the other updates are worthwhile.

My old PB has developed a logic board fault and the display keeps fritzing out. But waiting the last few months has been worth it.

17" is $200.00 cheaper
7200 rpm drives available
higher res display, 46% brighter
Dual Layer Super-drive
Tiger & iLife'05 ( Currently I use Panther and no iLife)

I still would rather own this PB with Apple software than a new Sony Viao with Pentium-M 2.3 Ghz. Personally I don't see the speed increase of the Pentium-M with the apps I normally use, probably because of heavy alti-vec dependance. The Apple PB is a lot sturdier, better designed, and I like OS X better than Linux, forget Windows.

I won't even consider an Intel based Mac laptop until Merom is available and Adobe has native version of Photoshop/ CS. Same with Corel Painter, Maya, etc.

Yes, but in this case many of us are considering Yonah (rev a) vs Merom (rev b). That's speculation I know, but there's much more to that comparison than simply the first engineering effort.

I've never really felt that my PB is slow. I don't do heavy graphics or video, but I use MS Office, Endnote, iTunes and iPhoto heavily. PB is perfect for that. Even for a game once in a while! ;)

I was hoping that my powerbook would not be outdated too much, but this is ridiculous
Tell me about it. I'm loving my 1.33 Ghz 12". I bought it at the right time. It's been 1.5 years and it's only been improved by 30% speedwise. Nothing better has really been added to them in terms of graphics or anything else. Same resolution, same graphics card, same HD...

I think its lame the 12-inch couldn't even get a dual layer superdrive! Not even 512MB soldered on the motherboard either. Very lame. :(

I got about 3.5 hours on my Rev. D 12" powerbook.... not terrible considering I had airport on and screen halfway up on brightness.

I work in the graphic arts industry so my previous TiBook was VERY slow ... thankfully, I have dual 2.7 PMs at the office. Saved me buying before now.

Guys, it IS the 7448 chip - I called the Apple store here in Pentagon City and they had one on display and I had the guy check the System Profiler and it said it had 1MB of cache!
