So will I be able to use the Tbolt port from my MBP to a new iMac and use Migration Assistant to transfer files and settings? If so where can you get a cable? Or will FW800 be fine?

Dude this is the best desktop all in one system out there. Everything else being sold out there looks junky..

Wait till OS Lion comes in a few months....its going to rock the world!

I'm not arguing that point. In fact I'm likely going to get one myself since I feel it strikes a good balance in it's design. My comment was specifically targeted at the decision by Apple to utilize a mobile GPU as opposed to a desktop part. This compromise means that it should not be considered top-of-class in regards to graphics performance.
A similarly priced PC can significantly outperform the iMac in this area, albeit less elegantly.

You mean as in the extra 25% you have to fork out for the entry model in Switzerland?

It's CHF 1350 there, which is equivalent to almost 1500 USD (in the States, only 1200$).

Btw, in Norway, it's 9500 NOK (1800 USD) so that's 50 % extra.

This goes up to a 1000-dollar difference in the top iMac model, which is ridiculous...and in Euros it's even worse, as I could check...insane given the current exchange rate...

The 21.5" is about the same size as the 24", just cut down to a 16:9 aspect ratio. (1920x1080 resolution instead of 1920x1200 on the old 24")

Not until Intel releases such a CPU.

I hope you don't consider getting the RAM as a BTO option directly from Apple since that would be just a waste of money. Get the 27" model and upgrade the RAM yourself.

Thanks for telling an Apple Alum how to best buy and piece together an Apple BTO.

Please excuse my lack of knowledge in the Swiss tax situation, but does that price include taxes? If so what is the tax rate on such goods?

The listed US prices do not included taxes, so it's a bit more out of pocket then is quoted.

The only tax paid on top of the base price is VAT, at a measly 7.6%...I definitely think that Apple is doing some arbitrage here, either by subsidizing US customers with higher European prices or simply charging more in richer markets with an established willingness to pay more (of course, this applies only to those countries where import taxes/VAT are not really substantial)...

I am definitely getting a new iMac, but am still struggling with this stupid difference, ESPECIALLY given the Swiss Franc's strong value nowadays (in a "normal" world I should be paying nominally less or perhaps the same as in the US, NOT more).

Might have to break my podcast avoidance for the year and see if the MBW fellows annoy me any less in their talking about the new models this time!

Dammit they made it to 15 minutes! Then they all claimed that this was the first time the iMac had been offered with an SSD, and NO ONE refuted it :(.

MBPro vs new iMac?

I have a 2.8 Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro with 4 GB RAM I use to edit, render, and transcode HD video. Anyone know what kind speed increase I can expect with these activities with the new 27' i5 iMac?

I am placing an order, but would like to question the BTO
I will choose the 27inch version
3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
1TB Serial ATA Drive

Now the graphics is where I am stuck
Should I go for this
AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1GB GDDR5
or
AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5

What is the 2G version going to give me more that the 1G can't handle.

My usage will be mostly Mac OSX, with the occasional boot into Windows 7 to do some stuff the Mac can't do easily. Game play is not likely.
Viewing photos is a must, and very little video editing.

I expect the computer to last a few years.

Also - where can you get a thunderbolt to DVI/VGA adapter from so you can run an external monitor?

You'd have to be a fool to order that from Apple. Their upgrade prices on SSD's are a joke! It'd probably be cheaper to wait it out a couple of months and get an external thunderbolt one - it'll be just as fast if not faster!

You would boot off of an external SSD drive vs. the internal? I've never owned a Mac and an iMac will be my first. I received a price quote from a local Mac dealer on install and he indicated that the SSD will likely need "some cable" from apple that isn't normally included... Looks like $150-$200 for an install plus that cable. An external SSD sounds more attractive even if it's slightly less elegant than an all in 1 single solution....

No sata iii

OWC has just completed a tear-down of the new iMac.

The internal SATA connectors are STILL SATA II (3 gbps). There will be no SATA III (6 gbps) at least until the next refresh. DAMN! I really wanted to put a Vertex 3 SSD in there, but now stuck with the earlier SATA II model.

Oh well, waiting for the TB peripherals, but would have liked to boot internally with a SATA III drive.

I do have to admit. This is one of the first times when I feel that the base spec iMac actually has enough features to satisfy the general all-purpose user who wants to do a bit of everything without giving up anything, really.

Seems like you don't need all that power for what you will be doing with the computer. You could get the basic iMac and still be fine for what you would use it for.

I see that we are now referring to "Thunderbolt" as Tbolt. My first thought was, that's a good idea, but they could still just use TB and everyb.... and then it dawned on me that my idea might not be a good one :D

Doubling the graphics memory from 1GB to 2GB for $100 is a no-brainer. Good investment over the next couple years. Besides, its only like 1 tank of gas.

Wasn't the upgrade costs for double the graphics $200.00 this morning? Pretty sure it was...

Looks like most options dropped in price but the Processor price.

Kudos to Apple for including quad-core across the entire iMac line.

Apple should include a quad-core offering for the Mac Mini, or at least a BTO option.

I don't know if the US prices have changed, but in Australia Apple have taken ~25% off the price of the magic mouse / bluetooth keyboard, from $99 each to $75.

I am not sure. What is crazy is that a 27'' iMac with:

3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
2TB Serial ATA Drive + 256GB Solid State Drive
AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5
Totals $3049 regularly, and only $2844 with the education discount.

Compare that to the Mac Pro with:

One 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Nehalem”
3GB (3x1GB)
2TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s hard drive
512GB solid-state drive
ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB
Totals $4,449 and that is without the 27" monitor. Add that in and you are looking at $5,449. All that with education discount is $5,000.

You get computer that is more powerful and takes up less space for about 60% of the cost. I want to order one sooooo bad. Damn you school loans. Damn you all to hell.

Edit: I should go into sales...

Question

Anyone have a link or seen some benchmarks comparing the new iMacs and MBPs?

Finally

Just purchased my first Mac. 27' iMac. I have been wanting one since Decemeber and checking for the latest updates as to when this refresh was going to happen. As a first time Mac user, is there anything special I should do when I get my Mac? May10-12 can't come soon enough.
