Use the internet recovery mode to reinstall OS X on your Mac

The Mac will now start in OS X Recovery mode.

How to reinstall Mac OS X: How to connect to the internet in OS X Recovery mode

  1. Click the Wi-Fi menu in the upper-right corner of the screen.
  2. Select a Wi-Fi network.
  3. Enter the Wi-Fi password (if required).
OS X Recovery mode should now be connected to the internet and can download the OS X installation software.

You will now be able to download OS X and reinstall it on your Mac. Note that it is a large file and will take a while to download. The speed of this process is of course dependent on your broadband connection: it's unadvisable to download OS X using a non-broadband connection. You will also need your Apple ID and password to install OS X from the App Store.

Click Install Mac OS X and Continue in the OS X Utilities section of the screen to begin the installation process. Follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall OS X.

I really hope this fixes the issues with Microsoft Office 2016. That whole fiasco really took the shine off the El Capitan roll out --- I'm never being an 'early adopter' to a new OS release again
Erik Schwiebert, a Microsoft Mac engineer had this to say about the bug in 10.11: http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?p=29982341#p29982341

In short, it was a bug in SQLite that was causing Office to sit around waiting for a response for many billions of seconds. I'm confident the problem is resolved now.

If I were to disable SIP will that help or avoid the issue? Thankfully, haven't yet pressed, was literally about to, as your reply came through. Ooooo-ya!

Moving up from 10.10 btw.

You are being misinformed. NI plugins failed because of issues with auvaltool, that's been sorted with 10.11.1 update and everything is fine. As far as incompatibilities with hardware usb devices from NI (which is what the forum deals with), that's not related to your issues, and neither is SIP. Those devices need updated drivers as a result of the rewritten usb stack in 10.11

Not happening for me...

This is the issue I'm having... the thumbnails shift to a side when I move the cursor.

Ahhhh... cheers for the clarity on that.

Just as well I can't sleep. Shi**y day and now a sleepless night. Might have to press the button just for the hell of it and watch the progress bar for something to do. Lol.

Wow, i thought i was the only one with this issue. I have had preview using upwards of 5GB of RAM with just a few small files open.

You dared to open "a few!?" I can't go past 2 without a crash, I have't tried more than 3. It's really annoying because I use it daily and it will just freeze.

Same here. This is real annoying because I go through many PDF files. Preview was perfect under Mavericks (I don't know how it went in Yosemite, I never used that version). I've already lodged a bug report with Apple....

Luckily, i haven't had any crashes (yet). But it is definitely annoying to see preview.app taking up more than half of the RAM.

I tried some other PDF readers from the App Store. It seems that the problem is not isolated to the preview application. All PDF readers resulted in a memory leak. Probably have to do something with how El Capitan handles PDF files.

+1. I wish i could go back to the preview app from Mavericks. Ever since Yosemite, Preview has been buggy and laggy (at least in terms of handling PDF files).

I updated to 10.11.1 earlier today (download size was something like 1.2 GB).

However, the App Store tells me now that there is a new update available again, the 6GB one. That's very confusing! What am I supposed to do to make this 'doublet' update go away? Will the updater eventually realize that I'm already running the latest version.

I also noticed that the icons are actually from Yosemite except the latest. What's wrong with Apple?

It will also update the El Capitan installer app if you have it installed. If you don't have it installed then it must be a bug.

You should keep that file in an external drive or make a dedicated bootable USB drive with it and delete it from your Mac, it eats almost 6Gb of space (a lot if you have a 128Gb SSD)

No RAID support in Disk Utility anymore, but we now have a taco icon and middle finger! Woohoo! That middle finger one will come in handy when I send Tim Cook my feedback on how I feel about Apple's priorities these days. ;)

So what does this mean, exactly? Can we not use RAID drives any more? Or just not format them? Because that wouldn't be good. I rely on a portable 4TB miniature USB 3 bus powered RAID drive to store my Lightroom catalog and other files. It has two slim 2TB drives inside in RAID 0. Then I make weekly backups to a single 4TB desktop drive.

Does anybody know how to solve these two issues:

1. Show all desktop thumbnails once trying to choose a desktop? currently it says "desktop 1, 2, 3..." just text without showing me what's in each desktop. I need to hover over the desktop(s) line to see what's in each desktop in terms of applications - can I just keep it visible all the time?

2. When I open a PDF with multiple pages it's automatically opens it in a thumbnail view (the sidebar on the left), how do I hide the sidebar automatically when I open new PDFs without doing it manually? (i.e. not showing the sidebar when opening a PDF).

Thanks.

Thanks! That's what I'm doing right now. Hopefully it will work.

It means like Final Cut Pro, they decided to "redesign" Disk Utility from scratch (in this case for no good reason, IMO) and either they forgot to put all the features of the old one in or they purposely removed it. The functionality still exists, but you have to use the Terminal (command line) instead now to do anything. Maybe the makers of Soft Raid asked them to so they could charge $179 for a GUI version.
