My gods, this has been one of the slowest downloading update days in eons.

Pretty much all my update downloads (iPhone, Mac, etc.) have been throttled by Apple to about 8 megabits. Normally I get my full 50 megabits at home, and about 600 megabits at the office.

Wonder if it's some new throttling system on their servers to reduce the crush of everyone downloading at once? Still, it's annoying to have to wait so long for what used to take mere minutes.

I kept trying to use the App Store update mechanism but it was stopping randomly so now I'm just downloading the combo and it says 4 hours remaining. They must be swamped right now.

OSX update hanging at 125MB every time here. Guess the world and his dog is updating.
My iPhone took an hour to update, my iPad a few minutes.

Try again in the morning.

Here's the Combo:
http://swcdn.apple.com/content/down...hyakz1ajyqn6dyvu2f/OSXUpdCombo10.11.4Auto.pkg

Don't forget to install the firmware update first though:
http://swcdn.apple.com/content/down...dao83g9sqz3loxwdpy41c12jrz/FirmwareUpdate.pkg

Also for faster download here is the delta for those on 10.11.3 (or 10.11.4 betas):
http://swcdn.apple.com/content/down...gdao83g9sqz3loxwdpy41c12jrz/OSXUpd10.11.4.pkg

This delta is the one I'll use because it is faster than the combo. But again remember to install the firmware update first.

Build number is 15E65.

Alternative links:

delta: https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1868?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

combo: https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1869?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

You don't need to install the firmware update if you use these alternative links because it will be incorporated into it.

Incidentally, if someone can figure out why the support.apple.com (supportdownload.apple.com) links give me >3 MB/sec whereas the swcdn.apple.com give me ~250 kB/sec, I'd love to know. It's clearly some kind of CDN issue, but I have no idea how to work around it.

Wow, this update seemed to speed up my 2011 iMac. No joke. I normally have the bare minimum login items open up after I reboot because the start up is soooo slow... and when I realized it was starting up after the update with all the applications that were open before the update, I was preparing for a long start up. Instead, it started up even quicker than having just the bare minimum login items open.

Well, these standalone DMGs contain the FirmwareUpdate package as well so that's the main difference.

EDIT: But even the sum of sizes of both individual update pkgs (OSXUpdCombo10.11.4Auto.pkg, FirmwareUpdate.pkg) doesn't even remotely match the size of the standalone dmg. Actually the OSXUpdCombo10.11.4Auto.pkg is of almost the same size as delta
OSXUpd10.11.4.pkg, and the "Auto" in the file name is also a new thing (at least I don't remember seeing that in the past). Interesting...

Don't know why we didn't see this before..

When I initially went looking for the combo update, the first place I was always able to find a link for it is back at the TonyMacx86 forums, as they always suggest grabbing the combo update instead of updating through the App store (for obvious reasons).

Anywho, in looking at their threads, someone there noticed that the combo update (as linked in your first post) was smaller than the DMG file that is linked in your second post. Obviously, alarm bells would have gone off about that, which is why I removed it and went to the link in your second post (the 1st link was a 1.58GB file, while the 2nd link was 1.94GB).

However, in looking at it again, how much compression is done between the dmg file and a .pkg file? Because that is what is listed as the combo update in the 1st link, which also wouldn't have included the firmware update. My guess is that whatever little space for compression/compacting that goes into the .dmg wouldn't allot for the Firmware update, so they should even out.

But none of us caught that the combo update comes in .pkg and .dmg formats.

The 2010 MacBook Pro I'm using has a faulty discrete graphics card and today's update now uses integrated graphics for video, so no crashes with YouTube embeds and going full screen, Atom doesn't crash the system on close, and iMovie opens fine without having to change the settings on gfxCardStatus, and I can actually use Pixelmator on this machine now. So whatever changes they made to make it a little stabler is working and is GREATLY appreciated!!

But yeah, it took like a hour to install.

I installed te update and now I'm in the process of slowly restoring my late 2014 iMac from a Timemachine backup.

Immediately after installing the update and restarting my Mac I got a kernel panic (unexpected sigkill of launchd) that made my Mac unusable.

I recommend not to install the update at the moment.

If we compare delta updates the size does nicely match (there's just 1 242 885 B difference):
1. DMG
osxupd10.11.4.dmg: 1 580 282 462 B
2. PKG
OSXUpd10.11.4.pkg + FirmwareUpdate.pkg: 1 453 682 103 + 125 357 474 = 1 579 039 577 B

While with combo updates we're way off (361 885 287 B difference):
1. DMG
osxupdcombo10.11.4.dmg: 1 942 964 664 B
2. PKG
OSXUpdCombo10.11.4Auto.pkg + FirmwareUpdate.pkg: 1 455 721 906 + 125 357 471 = 1 581 079 377 B

That's pretty big difference given that there's practically none in the case of delta updates. Some compression? Maybe, but then why it's ineffective for the delta update? More thorough comparison would be needed, then we may get some idea why there's such big difference. I've already deleted the pkg and don't want to download it via my current mobile connection, but may try to download it tomorrow, extract with Pacifist and compare the contents.

Yeah, I used:

https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1869?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

With the firmware update included in the bundle. Worked fine, the download took 1 1/2 hours though.
Yeah, if swupdate download keeps stalling, try this one. It downloaded much faster for me as well.

I think that Apple should really reconsider their release publishing planning. When they do it like now - that means all OS X, iOS, tvOS etc... updates go out at the same time - they cause major spikes in the content delivery infrastructure utilization. Some staged approach would be better.

My Retina iMac upgraded in 3 minutes but my three laptops keep hanging at 125 MB.

Wouldn’t the firmware update be included in the 10.11.4 update from the Mac App Store?

A firmware update may appear in the mac app store if it is NOT associated with an OS X update.

For those that are (and most of them are thesedays) it will not appear as a separate update in the mac app store but will download together with the OS X update.

If you update via the mac app store you can check this yourself by opening /Library/Updates after you download it - but before installing it and you will see a folder with numbers inside. Open it. There you will see FirmwareUpdate.pkg and either OSXUpd10.11.4.pkg or OSXUpdCombo10.11.4Auto.pkg depending on whether your system requires the delta or combo.

Unless you back these up then upon installing and restarting they will delete themselves from this folder.

That is why I prefer to download the standalone installers instead of updating via the mac app store. They will not delete themselves.

There is also a new safari for yosemite and mavericks:

Made an install USB stick via latest version of Diskmaker X. Downloaded 10.11.4 via the app store in about 20 minutes or so. I expected it to stop over and over like it earlier today. Glad to see it went smooth.

Greetings,

Anyone else notice unusual appearance and behavior of items in Sys Prefs (e.g. panes in Network preference pane show overlapping text, icons, etc)? Also getting error msg that Internet Accounts preference pane cannot be loaded. Running early 2011 MBP, 15 inch.
